"Am I the only one who has no interest in the romance in this drama? "
As a fan of Ha Joon (Tae Ho), I'm also sad to say that I am not interested in the romance and I really hate the triangle. At this point, I am on Team Tae Min - I want him to have a happy-ever-after ending and that definitely IS NOT with Hyo Shim.
But I do think there were some major turning points in Episode 17 with many of the characters and their stories, so we shall see.
Also, I fully expect that Grandmother won't appear publicly until somewhere between Episodes 35 and 40ish - I think it will be the culmination of whatever battle will ensue between Tae Min and Tae Ho for control of the company.
Ratings stagnate bc the story and characters in the drama itself do atm. Also we cannot disregard the fact of…
I think the writer did a great job of establishing the characters and their "history" (back-story) by Episode 8-9. But then she has taken another 10 episodes to establish the various stories/conflicts - Ha Jun preparing for the exam (no change); Hyo Seong's dysfunctional family (no change); Soo Kyung's determination to marry Tae Min (no change); Tae Ho pity party for not having a family (no change); and Hyo Shim's never ending subservience to her family (no change).
But, as I speculated in my original post, Episode 17 (I've only watched the raw version) appears to have been a major turning point in a variety of the stories: Ha Jun/Mi Rim; the three sons finally facing realizing. . . .I'm not sure what until I see subs but apparently facing some hard facts about their mother and her treatment of Hyo Shim??? ; villainess--in-training attacking Hyo Shim.; some sort of revelation from Villainess #1 and her pitiful husband.
I'm glad you are happy with how things are proceeding with Tae Ho and Hyo Shim but they are just not on my radar - a major disappointment for me as a fan of Ha Joon, but some of the other stories are keeping my interest.
The rating isn't improving at all because so far knetz can't click to any character & plot. Viewers are supposedly…
When I mention "ratings", I mean the Korean Nielsen ratings - which is based on households (?) watching on their TV sets in Korea, not the younger internet viewers (knetz) or MDL viewers.
I've only watched the raw (unsubbed) version of Episode 17, but as I speculated in my original comment, it appears that there were some major movement in many of the storylines. Can't wait to sit down and watch the Hyo Joon and Mi-rim scenes - SOMETHING momentous happened outside the theater it seems. Hyo Jun knows an actor (???) and she a lawyer? Crossing my fingers they strike a grand bargain. 😊
A good weekender has something for everyone - from a grandmother to a teen granddaughter - and this drama still has the ingredients. But it has taken too long to get to the major shake-ups.
the reason why I'm watching this drama is because it's funny and I like Lee hyo joon and Jung Mi Rim even though…
They are one of the "main" romances/lovelines and right now, the potential for their "story" is intriguing, perhaps even charming.
For humor - I get a grin on my face whenever the TS Fitness clients arrive and begin to bicker or cause problems. They may be minor characters, but in the end, they will be important in some of the stories - especially the story of Ga-on (young singer).
Did the FL have any boyfriends while in school? She just have a blank stare on every confession. She seems like…
I believe there was an early scene where someone mentioned that she had never dated or had a boyfriend because she was devoted to her family.
Lots of "articles" today that say the same thing (which means they are based upon KBS press releases): [Yui} declared "that dating is a luxury for the time being."
Ratings (in Korea) are not holding up. Saturday Nielsen (nationwide) was 14.5% - down from 15.5% last week.
I’ve read a couple of Korean “tv critic” articles and they have mentioned the lack of “plot twists” or significant forward movement in the stories.
Perhaps – based upon ep 1 and the Ep. 17 preview - things are beginning to shake out – Hyo Jun hitting rock bottom; increasing attention on the Missing Father Lee (I still believe he will appear very soon). But critics are correct – other than the fake “death” of Grandmama, there have been no other real “plot twists”.
Writer-nim (or executive suite) have clearly revamped the character of Kang Jin Bum. In the first episode, he lectured his wife about drinking too much. We learned that his father abused him both physically and psychologically. But rather than address issue of PTSD/abuse, writers have chosen to simply make the character a hopeless alcoholic. Very disappointing.
Would of been a bit more than a slap from me but anyway. it's either bullshit or the financial laws there are…
My impression is that the mother was the one to initially set up the account with the first deposit (10MM won??). So, she probably had signature authority as well. Over the years, Hyo Shim deposited money as well.
But the REALLY distressing part for me is that apparently during all those years, Hyo Shim NEVER LOOKED AT THE ACCOUNT! I'm having a hard time forgiving the writers for making her look so stupid and irresponsible. I know it's a plot device, but I find it even harder to root for her.
I watched only one episode (No. 8) to see how the Kim Kwon character was portrayed and decided to wait for the…
I'll clarify my comment a bit. I only checked out this drama because of Kim Kwon. Most viewers (commenters) seemed to love the show (although frustrated with all the delays), but the premise of the drama never appealed to me, if for no other reason than I don't enjoy violence.
So, although I enjoy watching Kim Kwon, my time for watching kdramas is limited, and this drama won't be going on my watchlist.
Moral lesson: not every evil person gets their punishment on earth. Please no season 2 though
I watched only one episode (No. 8) to see how the Kim Kwon character was portrayed and decided to wait for the finish before deciding whether to watch other episodes.
Hard No on watching anything more but after reading recaps and comments, it seems to me that the overall "message" is: "Revenge" is not the answer. Not the solution.
That is. . . was the "revenge" worth it? Was the satisfaction of seeing bad guys get their "justice" worth the innocent loss? In the end, was it worth the sacrifice?
No.
But, as I said. . . I only watched one episode and Kim Kwon's performance was truly off the charts. 😊
Oh god the ep 15 got me so angry. The only highlight was the short interaction TH and HS had. I wanted to punch…
The scene with Tae Min and Tae Ho was my favorite.
Tae Min resents the fact that Tae Ho's father allowed Tae Ho to do whatever he wished (on the company dime, I might add - Tae Ho never worked for a living), but in proper Confucian form, he has accepted his duty to his family and to the thousands of Taesan Group employees. He is proud of his accomplishments (the deal with the "Saudis"). What he really wants is a separate private life - and unfortunately, he believes Hyo Shim is the answer.
And one reason (of many) that Hyo Shim is not the answer is that SHE has also played the proper Confucian role towards her mother and siblings and has not been allowed to live HER dreams. She resents how her mother lavishes attention on her brothers (and THEIR dreams) and trivializes Hyo Shim's accomplishments and dreams.
Tae Min and Hyo Shim have been forced to live a life of duty over a personal life. Tae Ho, on the other hand, has lived a very privileged, personal life with no duty to others. At some point, a proper balance for all three will be achieved but I'm frankly not up to watching another 35 episodes arrive to that destination. Fortunately, there are other characters that I do enjoy watching.
I'm ready to fight anybody who talks smack about Hyo-shim. Square up. Also, a reminder that this is a 50-ep drama…
At one time, I thought about playing a game of "which kdrama trope will occur on LYOL and which character will it involve?"
Amnesia? Hyo Shim__ Go Joo Won ___ Ha Joon___ Birth Secret? Mi-rim ___ Park Ga-on___ Kang Tae Hee___Other___ Pregnancy? He Joo ___ Choi Su Kyung___ Tae Hee_____ Ru-bi_____
At the time, Ru-bi pregnancy was a joke, but after yesterday's episode, she's now a definite possibility (although highschool students having sex isn't a standard weekender trope, is it? In fact, after watching TRHC, no one has sex on a weekender😊😊😊)
My favorite scene yesterday was the two “brothers” at the art gallery, talking about Tae Ho’s mother and her influence on Tae Min growing up.
Fun Fact: Those scenes were filed at the art gallery (Kki Gallery) owned by the actor Lee Kwang Ki (“evil” henchman Yeom Jin Soo) in Paju, Korea. His ig page is full of photos from the gallery and exhibitions but he also posts photos from LYOL location shoots which are usually 4-5 weeks in advance of the actual air date. A few weeks ago, he posted photos of Ha Jun at the gallery with the notation:
“Actor Hajun Galleriki visit to Paju ^^ A sight to behold...”
There were other photos with Go Joo Won and the notation with the hashtag “Live Your Own Life” but I don’t see them now – perhaps he was asked to remove them. At any rate, he did post the following yesterday which shows both actors at the gallery:
Today's episode, I literally wanted to smack HS mother left right and center. What a hypocrite. Just hated her…
Same here -I first watched that scene raw and then because of the obvious conflict, took my limited remaining time to watch that scene w/subs. Horrible character - but a really good actress who delivered a long monologue from memory.
That's one thing I've noticed - the seniors can deliver lengthy "speeches" in one scene with no cut aways.
Hyo-sim and Sun-soon are told at the police station that Hyo-jun may be arrested. In the process of helping Hyo-jun, Mi-rim's identity is revealed and she asks Hyo-shim if she can get the settlement money of fifty million won. Sook-hyang tries to connect Taemin and Su-kyung, and Su-kyung is also aggressive. Meanwhile, while looking for money everywhere, Hyo-shim receives a welcome phone call from Tae-ho.
Something tells me that today's cliffhanger (originally planned for a Sunday episode) will mean absolutely nothing. I'm really interested in Mi-rim's background/identity - 50 Million KRW = about $38,000 USA.
Is it better than the real has come? Because that one was one hell of a letdown after half of the show.
Difficult to say since we are only 25% through the episodes. There is no doubt in my mind that halfway through the TRHC, decisions were made to ignore/erase prior facts. However, one main difference is how the characters are connected or NOT connected.
TRHC: OTP is a woman from one family and a man from a different family. There are no connections -for example: work, step-family, cousins, university alumni, whatever) amongst the two families except for the OTP. Eventually, virtually every scene or action revolved around the main couple as most other family characters were relegated to the status of furniture.
LYOL: Lots of various connections right from the beginning and I think there will be more eventually, but right off the bat, various members of the Lee family have connections with the Kang family - work, fitness center, runaway (Kang) grandmother ends up hiding with the Lee family, etc. etc. So, the writer has already carefully established a foundation of multiple connections and we shall see how well she continues to weave the various stories/plots together.
As a fan of Ha Joon (Tae Ho), I'm also sad to say that I am not interested in the romance and I really hate the triangle. At this point, I am on Team Tae Min - I want him to have a happy-ever-after ending and that definitely IS NOT with Hyo Shim.

Also, I fully expect that Grandmother won't appear publicly until somewhere between Episodes 35 and 40ish - I think it will be the culmination of whatever battle will ensue between Tae Min and Tae Ho for control of the company.
But there is only one "romantic" male lead and that is Tae Ho.
