I guess it's a matter of opinion. I saw this before BOF and much preferred Darren Chen's performance. He makes me feel like he really doesn't care, not like his Face is frozen.

If you are thinking about watch this, take note:
- this is not a drama with three seasons but one 36 episode drama split in three
- there are a lot of loop holes, you'll find yourself saying a lot of times "but..."
- the romance scenes are really good but sometimes scarce, you have to be interested in police drama too
- there are a lot of rapes and multiple rape scenes, beware if you are triggered by this
- you can buy iQIYI to watch this with high quality picture, but the subbing there is made by an AI and quite crappy. Take note that the police Cold Noodles is actually called Cold Face, and in the first season when they talk about the FL being "lu chi", it means she has a bad or no sense of direction at all.
If all this is fine for you, give this drama a chance! I myself found it entertaining and watched it in a few days without getting bored.

Does anyone have a link for the novel's side stories? Preferably in English but if not Chinese will have to do. I've read the novel translation earlier but only side story 2 (Ye Hua) was translated. I'd like to read the others. Especially if there is one about Xuan Nu.

The scene where Yutan was steamed alive. She didn't look bad but people vomiting around her and the thought of it made me feel nauseated. I watched this on Viki and it was crazy how so many people in the comments kept praising the 4th prince all the way, saying this was necessary...

I think the romance was not worth watching but overall plot kept me interested. Do not try this if you want to feel good, I still gag a little when I think of especially one scene, I'll put it in the comments under a spoiler tag.

There were some major plot issues in season one, I agree. That's why season 2 is so great - they took the same characters and created them a new story where they fixed the parts that were most annoying in season one :D

I'm not usually one to get the second lead syndrome, but this was one of those rare cases. Anyone else think her ex was perfect and she should have been with him?

Finally finished it, as it got better from episode 49 onwards. Not as good as the first half but watchable.
