Besides the horrible storytelling with non existent character arcs or well thought out storylines, this Drama showcases who you should NEVER pursue as a potential romantic partner; the FL. If you happen to encounter a person like that (be it male or a female), turn 180° around and run like your life depended on it.
PJM is a soldier, one who sacrifices everything to achieve success in a mission. I don't, at all, think that he's the worst of evil. Of all the messed up people he's surrounded with, he's by far the most loyal to his cause. His cause was just but the means to achieve it was questionable and that's what a soldier does; to sacrifice little parts of himself for the greater good. PJM is the necessary evil to get rid of the worst of evil.
this movie is so good and not for the weak so y'all should stop complaining about unnecessary things. don't watch…
Your comment down below this one doesn't at all provide a prespective or view of someone who's looking through a prism of what the writers are trying to convey. and no it isn't some badly written romantic cliche where everything logical is thrown out the window to satisfy juvenile need for a "happy ending" in a messed up way.
“Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”
– Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil
Change in the prespective of life and comprehension of one's true nature is inevitable once fully initiated into the desperate struggle for righteousness in the grand veil of the worst of evil.
So I think we can agree on the fact that the "romance" should have the least effect in a noir genre of this calibre but it's also true that the writers milked the hell out of the "love lines" (I don't know what to call all this mess) of characters that has genuinely affected the characters arcs and development. JKC's and the FL's characters are reduced to a love fool crime boss and a useless cop respectively. Their characters are dimensionsless. The love stricken crime boss with ambitions of grandeur and position of a leader in a crime syndicate full of dangers and betrayals is reduced to the "love stricken" part mostly. The wife of an undercover cop, who is a well established cop herself, with goals to rescue and help with the operation of her husband by being deceiving and manipulating the crime boss is reduced to a prop for the unnecessary need of korean writers to introduce romantic tension between characters.
The excessive use of cigarettes is actually more accurate than simply a prop to make the characters look "cool". They are living a highly stressful and challenging life. To relieve the stress and cope with nerve-wracking environment around them, Nicotine serves as a temporary relaxer and provide a psychological escape.
Like someone below stated; JKC has to be one of the most naive and frustratingly unaware head of a criminal organisation I've ever seen in fiction. The man can't get anything right since his infatuation with his "first love" started. His character would have been more suitable in a comedic/romantic gangster genre. His associates are more competent and have been far more threatening as an antagonistic force to the ML. I don't know how he climbed up so high and I sure can't wrap my head around the fact that his associates still trust him. The elevator fight sequence was very well shot and chief Soe is a brutal MF. The police station bit was very well acted by JCW. The man has doubled his acting chops for this drama.
I'm utterly clueless as to why they included a directionless character like the FL into the story for the purpose of a wife "helping" her husband when all she has done is to reminiscence about her past with SML. It seems like an unnecessary prop in the form of ridiculous "love triangle". All she has done so far is make it worse for the ML more than anything.
The ending of ep 7 was really well done. The moral dilemma of the situation isn't whether they can uproot the criminal element anymore, it's far personal now. The evilness in ML's ambition and greed is far less visible in contrast to the world we see around him but it's still there. The visiblity has certainly gone an upward curve the more we dive into the story and that what I like the most about the story; Everyone is capable of evil and is most likely to commit to it if pushed enough.
"Madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push" There's no unstoppable force or an immovable object in this story. Everything and everyone is in constant motion towards the grand delusion of self righteousness in the veil of evilness.
I find that it’s a trait that humanizes his character. It’s an aspect that brings JKC back into the real world.…
I most certainly understand that his emotions are supposed to make us feel his contrasting side but it still baffles that he's willing to take the risk with everything he has build by pursuing a freaking cop.
Dont forget he is not in this for being evil, but circumstances, life, whatever happened in his teenage years,…
I never said he wasn't a human being. He absolutely is and that's intresting about being a human; you can be an absolute scum but still be able to feel common emotions. I never said anything about him not having any humanity left but he still is a murderer above all else. That's an unforgivable crime in my opinion and him showing emotions doesn't frankly do anything absolving other than carrying the story forward. Around 99.99% of the crime world is built by people with various ambitions (wealth, power, influence) and not because they like being "evil". So it doesn't make sense to say that since he isn't a psychopath and therefore is redeemable enough to justify him being evil.
What do you expect? Should the ML just tell him that he's an undercover cop who's here to ruin his crime world or should the FL just tell him that the ML is her husband and is here to dig your grave as an undercover cop?
He may be know about them, he just playing with them it can be big chance of this, but he still love euijeong.
That can be true but it doesn't absolve his stupidity in a world full selfishness and harm to others. Why's he delivering himself on a silver platter to the authorities when he knows they are deceiving him. It doesn't make sense till now but I hope it will in the future episodes without resorting to the cliche and stupid arc of him willingly sacrificing himself just because he can't process his emotions towards the FL as he should. I need him to present himself realistically as someone who holds the position he has in a world presented realistically.
The only senseless and unnecessary trait in all the characters involved is JKC's nonsensical attempt to pursue a cop. He has been shown as someone very capable and very aware of potential threats around him which is why he's regarded as the most dangerous but him being blind to the threat a cop can present just because he can't control his emotions like a 12 years old for his "first love" is idiotic. It completely dismantles his previous set of character traits (him being astute, observant and very aware) in my vision to try to see him as someone who can hold his own or even surpass his very competent associates and rivals. He has the ambitions of grandeur but isn't competent enough to follow through with what's necessary. And the last thing I want to say is he isn't a "grey" character. He's a pitch black one like Micheal Corleone, Tony Soprano or Walter White but far less competent and unfocused. That doesn't make him an unlikeable character, on the contrary it makes him a lot more intresting as a character that carries the story forward, but it does make him an unlikeable person. He's a necessity in this story like the protagonist but I wouldn't call a murderer and a drug dealer a "grey" character just because he is in "love".
I am flabbergasted. Like wow! This is something everybody should watch whether you like the genre or not. It is the epitome of raw and honest journey of a protagonist through a life presented very convincingly and genuinely.I don't get the buzz about the "love triangle". First I'm not sure if people really are watching the show I am, because there's no way JKC will survive or live the "romantic" life people seem to expect. The man is a murderer and a drug dealer. That's the lowest form of human life but sure to satisfy vanity everything is irrelevant for some people except the requirement of him being "handsome" and the whole scenario of "cheating" providing cheap thrills.I know I shouldn't be surprised by it but I am.Cast someone "ugly" in that role without changing a single thing about the character and suddenly you'll see the same people dissing him.Anyway it's a beautifully written script with very little unnecessary plot points.
If you happen to encounter a person like that (be it male or a female), turn 180° around and run like your life depended on it.
JKC did everything for money and that includes murders and drug dealings.
and no it isn't some badly written romantic cliche where everything logical is thrown out the window to satisfy juvenile need for a "happy ending" in a messed up way.
