A mature discerning adult would have made sure that her hitching this ride would not cause any misunderstanding between her company/boss and her. The depth of animosity and her knowledge of it is not important here. She already knew they may have done shady things in the project she is working on. It is not hiding away. Professional ethics in this case is to mai rain boundaries and a distance from the competition. Saying hi is fine but nothing beyond that . Especially because she knows the history and she is a new employee.
