in Ep 3 now and i just want to note a few things: 1. this show is criminally underrated 2. Ryu Jun Yeol is so handsome 3. I never realised how much Na Eun (Min Ja in the show) looks like Irene from Red Velvet LOL 4. the storyline is soooo similar with My Mister (depressed metropolitan people with a cynic view on life, develops a friendship, one party has to dig some dirt on the other party) only I think this will be a little more nuanced than My Mister.
I think some of the hate seems to stems that some people are not fond of the ML. And some assume it's only doing…
agreed! this is really true :)
also hi thereeee!! long time no see hahaha, dk if you remember but we chatted alot in Start-up's comment section during its release
i just started this show not long ago and was wondering if you would watch it too, looks like you did too! did u just started as well?
and just as a side note, even though I was one of the few ppl who didn't become a KSH fan after start-up (as i didn't really like HJP's character), i still decided to watch this show. No it's not because I watch every single kdrama, i am in fact quite picky and i have stopped watching kdrama for a few months. Yet, i still find this show thoroughly enjoyable and feel-good!
Of course, the writing isn't that sophisticated or complex, but what i admire alot about it was their attention to details to make sure the writing has a flow and connects with the audience intimately. Like for example, Vincenzo has been praised for alot of "complex" character writing as it was one of the first time a kdrama had a "villain" as a lead but i actually really found that drama to be a chore to watch, as it was so sophisticated to the point it felt pretentious and insubstantial. it was really messy and left zero intellectual OR emotional impact on me.
it's been almost a year and in retrospect, I think I was a little too harsh to it haha. It's actually so good and I've yet to watch a kdrama as interesting as this. Yes, the writing got wonky towards the end and it got really over-dramatic, cringy, and unrealistic. but it's the VIBE I'm talking about, the PREMISE of the show, the CHARACTERS... it was so fun and cool.. sigh :') missed it.
honestly was one of the few ppl who didn't love KSH's character in start-up, felt he was a bit patronising and self-righteous lol. But the character here is so much more mature and nuanced. Still has a little bit of the Han Ji Pyeong edge, but somehow it's so much more endearing here. Perhaps it's the much more layered writing or the improved acting skills of KSH.
SMA is also to-die for. It's my first time watching her actually but something about her performance...it's really real yet she doesn't try too hard to look realistic. kinda like, just enough. Their chemistry is also...electrifying <3 <3 like huhuh seriously,,, off the charts
been awhile since I properly enjoyed a kdrama, the last one that I enjoyed so much was actually Start-Up. The last few dramas I watched was kinda a miss for me that I actually stopped kdramas completely for a bit. really enjoying this show :)
cool broad idea, but immensely disapppointing execution. jokes become corny, and the plot are so stuffed with drama that it's too queasy. and somehow vincenzon always magically wins. so like, what's new?
Oh my gosh! I was so pleasantly surprised with this drama... I clicked on it by accident cos I just wanted to see how Jeon Yeo Bin looks in a different show, upon finishing Vincenzo (which I absolutely hated btw)
I saw the first 10 secs and I was like, what. And I clicked away. Then I was like, wait, let me at least see a scene with Yeo Bin... and I was so. Surprised. I got hooked immediately, emotionally invested, even (just in one episode)
I saw some comments saying that the starting was shaky... but I donāt get it... this is one of my favourite pilots ever! So so so good. Of course, I ended with a a cry, cos I was so so so touched by the personal stories.
After watching a few big-budget kind of dramas that are shallow, pretentious, and just show-offy, this is truly such a refresher. I canāt say much about the drama as a whole, but damn, ep1 was so so good and it reminded me just how honest and self-aware kdramas can be sometimes. Just how simple, and emotional, and intimate. I am so glad that Netflix recommended me this.
Give this a try! Donāt let the posters fool you :p
The writer is know for his work as an entertainment value. Most of his past works veer on illogical but still…
I get that itās not supposed to be an accurate depiction of how the mafia world works or how the law industry works. I get that kdramas are meant to be exaggerated and dramatised for entertainment purposes. But like I mentioned above^ at this point, the āentertainmentā is more like a child having a fever dream rather than actual amusing action.
I get that it doesnāt exactly have to imitate reality, so thatās not my main issue with the show. My main issue is that its entertainment is kinda...aimless and pointless (take note that Iām only up till ep9 ya) like for eg when Babel kept killing all of their enemies (like the prosecutors for eg) it just made absolute zero sense to me... it didnāt make me fear Babel more or find them a more intimidating villain, I just find them stupid and unnecessarily violent. It also makes the overall drama kinda futile? Bcs you donāt actually see how this villain is a threatening villain? They basically just kill people off?? Like what? Am I just supposed to expect Vincenzo to get death threats too...? The tenants scenes are also incredibly boring for me and I find no entertainment value in them. Like when they all took turns to try to find the gold... like whatās the point of those scenes? Except to milk some laughs?
Point is, their entertainment scenes are too incoherent and disjunct form one another. It just makes me care less and less about them and the plot. Sometimes I feel like Iām just watching a reel of Just For Laugh Gags or smtg.
To be clear - I donāt hate the show though and Iām not dropping it (so far haha). Iām just giving my honest thoughts bcs this show definitely has potential :(
I think it helps to manage your expectations regarding what show you're watching. This drama is primarily a comedy,…
Oh! I didnāt mean āadorableā as in like kawaii cute hahaha, I meant it as like ālikeableā or āadmirableā.
But ya, I probably should manage my expectations abit. Iām just a little sad bcs ep1 started out so strong as it came off as this dark and sophisticated and cinematic kinda kdrama. It also gave me Godfather+Inception vibes??? But sadly it plummeted so quickly into a bunch of random schemes that SJK and Babel comes up with that literally makes zero sense and adds zero value to the overall plot and character development so far. At one point it just felt like a bunch of kids retorting and taunting one another... I get that its primary goal is to entertain, and not to imitate reality- but when the writing becomes so completely detached from reality, I canāt help but feel indifferent to what it has to say. And when the writing becomes soooo messy and random, I canāt help but find the āentertainmentā to be rather aimless and desperate rather than amusing?
To each its own....for me is one of the best dramas I ever watched the mixing of plots is my cup of tea specially…
Hahahah I guess I was just making a general remark of how sometimes kdrama creators just want to create spectacular scenes (even if it adds zero value to the plot) to intrigue the everyday laity who is mainly just there for the buzz and the action? Or people who r just there to see song joong ki rather than the drama as a whole? I think itās quite common for creators to water-down its quality to then cater to a wider variety of audience
But genuine and dedicated fans would probably be more invested to see the layers and the developments of the drama world that the writers can create. Meaning even if itās just a boring talking/dialogue scene, but if it actually develops the world-building of the drama, I bet genuine fans would find those extremely rich and entertaining as well, because they genuinely want to see characters and the plot progress in a well-developed way.
I'm sad to say it won't.. It gets even more predictable and unbelievable.. I actually didn't notice you said you're…
Aw mannn :( that is so sad. Iām so frustrated with high-budget Kdramas like this.,, where it starts out so strong but it quickly plummets in its quality... but bcs youāre so invested into the characters you find it too hard to drop it... I found this to be the same for Start-Up & Itaewon Class
Just finished ep8 and here are some of my honest thoughts!
I really liked how ādarkā and āquirkyā the comedy and the thriller here is. I definitely love the intellectual vibe itās going for with SJK Boeing a very capable and perfect and intelligent kinda lawyer character. But... it didnāt stayed consistent throughout and sadly that facade of a highly intellectually show slowly sheds away as the story continues to drag on with illogical jumps, inconsistent character choices, schemes that SJK comes up with that is really not that intelligent (the hornet scene was really cringy, so was the following MyungHee to poker scene), the comedy becomes more annoyingly slapstick than adorable.
Itās just a very common flaw of kdramas in which they try too hard to āstimulateā fans that it kinda insults the intelligence of genuine fans who wants to be invested into the world the writers created. Where it starts injecting a whole bunch of unnatural plot twists and turns in order to drive the story forward, but really itās dragging the whole thing as the layers are not developed consistently.
Vincenzo slowly shows that its succumbing to this curse as its world-building continually becomes flatter and more predictable, as well as unoriginal and slightly cringe-worthy.
I really hope it picks back up the pace in the next few episodes. For now, slightly of a disappointment but the cinematography and the overall premise is good enough for me to not drop it.
