This was the first time I had seen Dai Feng Yi in a LEAD ROLE... and not as the villain. ...she is SO GOOD at being the villain and that was all I could think about for the first few episodes of this short series. ...she's played a "friend" of the lead before and is quirky and cute in that role, too. ...the second time I saw her as the FL was in this gem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyN_KDVq1Cg) which had be bawling for the first half and groaning for the second... where scenes and lines were directly ripped off from one of my favorite verticals starring Shen Hao Nan (https://kisskh.at/763315-mei-gui-guan-mian)...
Having said that, she impressed me as the lead and I am coming around to liking her. I have always liked Shen Hao Nan.
I don't remember that particular drama. I am not constantly updating the lists of youtube links on this profile page because they remove and re-upload the dramas too often to keep track of. If you type her name (in English, in Chinese or in both) into youtube, you usually get a couple playlists that are pretty well stacked - you might find it in there!
I have seen this script (almost exact) with other leads that I have really liked... and this one still holds up well. (my favorite, though, is with Zuo Yi)
I disagree, but I think her simpering is a little hard to handle even though it is justified by the character's background... it's just hard to accept that degree of pathos. However, seeing her emerge from that timidity as her relationship with the ML progresses - his softening and her accepting his affection - helps mitigate her earlier pathetic nature.
This is my favorite version of the story and the best acted/scripted of it that I have seen. Every time I come across another version, I have to cleanse my palate by returning to watch this one again.
Do you know the name of the Female Lead in this Drama ?
That's a bit harsh... it's like judging a whole country based on some b-rated films...
I agree that I personally DISLIKE these films - even though I DO like this actor. You should watch some of his other roles, he can do tenderness like few others (Here's a good one with Wang GeGe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSasIWWpjgc) - so it certainly isn't the actor himself.
These sado-masochistic abuse films are more common than my comfort level allows and rape, especially marital rape and daughter-selling, seems to be treated as trope and fairly common. I'm not even gonna try to excuse that... but I have seen dramatic changes in SOCIETAL acknowledgement and condemnation of domestic abuse in the last ten years so I have hope for the continuing shift of attitudes regarding rape and abuse as well.
There are some vertical dramas that address this trope directly... like on Wang GeGe film where she "wakes up" from the victim role and takes back her life - and other Wang GeGe film where she "falls" into a scripted play where the character simpers and gets abused... and basically refuses to be abused anymore (even fighting back)... in both of these the genre of abuse stories and lead-role victims is mentioned outright and with disdain - showing that there is considerable acknowledgement of its disgusting nature.
Positive, no abuse, quirky and calm. I love the 2ML's angst at discovering he had lost what he had taken for granted…
Here is the same story, different actors but better subtitles. I like this actress from other films but the whole cast is lacking when compared to the Gege-HaoNan version, acting-wise. However, the clearer / better adapted subtitles made me understand bits of this one better after re-watching it.
The dynamic between the leads is both interesting and confusing, yet there is definite chemistry. As the plot develops and the ML's emotional dependence tips over into physical attraction, the creep factor is glossed over and eventually subverted by a mutual understanding, respect and dependence on each other. The FL is intelligent, savvy, determined and mostly in control of her destiny - a nice change from most vertical dramas.
Of several versions of this vertical drama plot, this one is the second best.
