What's up with the male lead Yuan Fei Bai's make-up? He looks so gay. Is he supposed to be gay in here? Or the make-up artist made fun of him through this prank? It's terrible! How can you be in love with a man who looks prettier and fragile like a girl. LOL!

I was excited to watch this series as it has great reviews and high score feedback. However I had a hard time finishing it. I pushed myself to finish it but I really couldn't do it. The show has a great plot which is obviously inspired from The Man Behind The Iron Mask. However this series lacks the execution of the intrigue and drama. The flow is too slow and the cast are all boringly portraying their characters. The empress looked too old for the emperor who only has two facial expressions. And the emperor looked looked like a twelve year old choir boy who had one facial expression the entire show. None of the women here are exciting. They are too bland. The only great thing in this series is Elvis Han. I guess he portrayed his character well.

I'm sorry but I was really bored watching this show. Not great at all. I wouldn't recommend it.

I love the story and would give this series a two thumbs up. But I don't like the actress that played Keiko the other love interest. She looked too dull and nothing exciting. I didn't see nor feel any chemistry between her and Hu Ge. I believe she's either unnecessary or they could have chosen a good looking actress.

This seems to be very interesting. How come not a lot of older series are not subtitled. They seemed to have fantastic stories and cast.

I hesitated for a very long time to start watching this, because I'll definitely never warm up to Ruby Lin and…
I agree with you. I'm not Chinese but I love to watch Chinese period dramas. But every time Ruby Lin is part of the cast I decide not to watch the series no matter how great the story is. I find her extremely annoying. With her face I believe she's better off as an antagonist instead of portraying the protagonist in a story.

I started to watch this and was really interested. But I had to stop watching. Can't handle to continuously watching it with the terrible face of the female lead. Come on she's got such an annoying acting style and it doesn't compliment her facial appearance.

I love this TV series. Set during the Chinese Republic era in which the country was ravaged by constant war among the so called "War Lords". Amidst this time two people fell in love from completely different backgrounds. One from the military family and the female lead is from the rich family. A story about marriage of convenience or forced marriage always leads to life of misery. An always common theme in a Chinese drama is a female antagonist who is passionately in love with the the male lead and would do everything to force herself to him. Thus conflict and disaster ensues. It seems like that Chinese women are hell bent once they set eyes on a man. To which I find ridiculous but I believe it's the culture. LOL!

I believe it's a well written TV series and the cast were great. Fantastic chemistry between the leads. Tragic story and illogical blaming of another family's ruin on which got nothing to do with the protagonist's family. It's really sad to watch how the old mentality prevails and forces a child to marry because they like the prospective mate without any regard on what their daughter feels. If you like romantic story with tragedy it's a must watch. It's a heart wrenching series.

What a captivating story! But the female lead's face ruins my watching enjoyment. Where do I begin? I understand the female's character vision of the story but still the creators could have chosen a better looking actress. She has nice abundant hair though. She has such an annoying face and no range of facial expression. She always displayed a facial expression that she detest or smelled some kind of bad odor. I watched this because I was bored. I don't normally watch modern Chinese series only the period dramas but I guess I ran out of something to watch.

If you're an extreme feminist perhaps you won't be able to handle to watch this series. It's the BDSM of television drama that touches your psyche. If you want to torture yourself at the same time having the pleasure of watching on how this series unfolds - this is how you will feel about this story. Kudos to the writers for creating such an excellent stupidly moronic female character. Yes she is an ABSOLUTE moron in this story. Indeed there are some people in this world who would allow themselves to be dominated and manipulated by others. I extremely abhor this character because as a human being you're responsible of what happens to you.

If it were not for the story I won't be able to finish this series. Damn! None of the cast in this drama are good looking except for Harwich Lau. Even him is not really outstandingly handsome. His supposedly wife looked so matronly that she could have played his mother. Come on! What's wrong with the creators? Perhaps this is an extremely low budget project. Even the other love interest of the female lead looked like below average. What's the point of watching a movie or TV if they're not pleasing to the eyes. Instead they're an eye sore. Indeed good job to the creators for creating this fantastic series despite the lackluster appearance of the cast. Except of course of the male lead and his acting skill is superb. Bravo! Most of the time you would loathe him at the same time he can successfully make you feel pity for him.

Alright I find this series fantastic on the first 20 to 25 episodes though I didn't like the appearance of the female lead she looks simpleton and very infantile. Towards the end it became rather boring and silly. The issue could have just been resolved by saying what's the suspicion all about between couple. I understand that's what the writers decided but damn. It just goes to show how stupid the female lead is.

I can't stand Tiffany Tang's face and acting style. I love the men but this female ruins my watching quality. I don't understand this childish kind of acting with a very child-like voice. Terrible Tiffany Tang.

Fantastic story. But damn! The main female lead is horrible! I bet the creator or director of this series is a pedophile. She looks like a 13 year old church girl. Horrible white pasty looking make-up. If it were not for the great looking male lead I wouldn't be able to finish the series. The actress who played Min Hongyu was excellent. Love her! All the cast were fantastic except the awkward female lead. She is such a distraction because I got pissed watching the series. I so badly wanted to finish it because it's an engrossing story but due to her awkwardness and ugly hair and make-up I can't stop cursing. The male lead is such an eye candy. Love him. Wrong choice for the female lead such a miss match!

Do you think they will fix the subtitle?I don't think so. Quality is really bad. I also checked the other series in this mentioned site (iQIYI) and it's the same thing.

It's seems to be a good TV series. But the subtitle done in English by iQIYI is downright terrible. But beggars can't be choosers, so to speak. The male leads are quite good looking although I hate their hair dos. I don't understand why the Mongols and Qing dynasty period netizens thought those kind of dos was stylish. Now, the female actresses make up is horribly done. Which makes them look laughable for me. If you're trying to portray Asian and have them worn the native costumes & etc don't use color brown for eyebrows. This is my main complaint about Chinese series/cinema. They never nail the hair and make up part. Come on China you're great in imitation and among other things but hair and make on cinema can't fix it? For sure you can!
