Im going to have to stop reading comments on here. I was enjoying this Im only 4 ep. in and had a question, now…
I can understand how comments about plot holes can be discouraging, but personally, I thoroughly enjoyed this masterpiece. I believe the creators did their best to tie up all the loose ends, especially considering they worked with a small budget, had little support, and were asked to edit and cut out episodes. The story is rich in symbolism and open to interpretation, with an ending that resonates with many viewers. :3

I absolutely see where you're coming from, and you have every right to disagree. I agree with @honeylemoncha ā€” Chai Jing and Hanyan loved each other deeply and would have died for one another.

When Hanyan found out what Chai Jing had done for her, she turned herself in, admitted the truth to Fu Yunxi, and was ready to slit her own throat in exchange for Chai Jingā€™s freedom. Even from the beginning, Hanyan had told Chai Jing: ā€œPlease live your life. I know you yearn for the sea.ā€ And when Chai Jing was bedridden, Hanyan held her hand and said: ā€œIā€™ve long regarded you as my family. From now on, I will be the one to protect you.ā€

She wasn't physically as strong as Fu Yunxi or Chai Jing, but her form of protection was by not implicating them in her suicide mission ā€” which is why she hid what happened from Chai Jing. She didnā€™t stay behind for Fu Yunxi; she stayed to avenge her mother, fully prepared to die for it. Her love for Chai Jing was undeniable ā€” she ran all the way to the ocean just to see her one last time, standing in the cold as snow fell, tearfully watching Chai Jing sail away, reaching out for her even though she was beyond her grasp. Their love wasnā€™t about holding on ā€” it was about letting go. Chai Jing had to leave Hanyan so she could live her life. Hanyan let go so Chai Jing could live hers. This was a chapter they had to close in order to continue writing their own stories.

(As much as we love someone, sometimes they're meant to be passersby ā€” people who walk with us for a time, and help us write part of our journey.)

The writers conveyed these themes through symbolism: the soaring of a lone goose, the cutting of the kiteā€™s string (Fu Yunxi), Xiwen severing her ties with Hanyan. If you only watch at face value, these layers can be missed ā€” and thatā€™s okay too, because this story is rich and open to interpretation.

That said, I absolutely respect your opinion and Iā€™m not dismissing your perspective at all. We can agree to disagree ā€” thank you for sharing your thoughts.
