I read first few chapters of the novel a year ago then dropped it because it's really scary, too scary for my nerve to hold it.
Then I watched the series, and grateful because it has much less horror parts shown.
Then I re-read the novel but still skipped most of the horror parts.
The novel and the series, both are really good with its respective strengths and weaknesses.
I would suggest you to watch the series first.
Although you haven't read the novel, the series is much simpler and easy to be followed through.
Actually, the series is quite different from the novel, the characters are made more humane and lots of morale lessons that could be found in our daily life.

This Spirealm really worth to watch many times, kinda like obsessed about it.

This novel is quite angsty to me. Realistic one if we think about the life in China where everything is bounded by norm, tradition, and strict law.
It kinda reminds me of 'Have you been well?' that has quite similar plot and angst.
It's a good book but not the one that I will read again.
Actually, I'm not really into Priest's book. Of all her works, I only 1 book which is her early work back in 2010.
