Same here! I felt bad for her at first, but she seems to be getting darker bit by bit. She's being instigated by her maid and by the ML's mother, to some extent. But she's the one making the final choices and the choices she's making reveals her arrogance. I really liked how the ML put her in her place over the brocade dress; I saw it coming a mile away :D

You can try Story of Yanxi Palace - same time period, same emperor. It's a great drama with one of the best female leads you'll encounter.

I just finished the drama and I totally agree regarding the 'English' characters - their acting is too over-the-top.

I don't think the lower rating is limited to this drama. I've compared the ratings of other dramas (some I've watched and others I plan to watch) here at MDL with other sites, and it seems MDL users are not as liberal with their stars. For example, Go Go Squid is 8.7 here but 9.6 at Viki.
