lanxiang was really depicted as the perfect ideal character. Which was okay to some sense because she found HER way. there's clarity, groundness and power in that!
but she almost always kept a distance with everyone. For me it was the lines between her and Jinqi, until the very end where he asks for more lifetimes but she says "one is enough".. while he pleads her with the thread. or the reunions between them always so composed; we can see she was always in control of her emotions.

I want to think that it was intentional because this series really wanted to show the FL's life outside the shade of a man.

besides that I thought it was amazing storytelling!!

amazng show but I only have 2 things that annoyed me:
lanxiang *extra* coldness and time jumps.

BUT!! time jumps!! they got me thinking:
Say a time jump happens at a crucial moment or a tension time... it acts like a mind reset. not just a convenient skip.

As this drama tries to show a life journey of surviving, I see the time jumps not as gaps but as a moment to look back at the past. So right before the time jump, I would ask: will this matter in 2, 4, 10 years?

Also, in our own biographies, time isn't very linear. it moves through "important" events and showing some and ignoring others. So can it still be like an intentional decision?

completely agree!! but I wouldn't say that lanxiang is an outlier of her Shen family because honoring her family was her ultimate life mission. that's where jinQi and Lanxiang meet. under that door with the "honoring family name". JinQi was also on the road to ruin and would not have left the capital has it not been for lanxiang...

so for me the fate between them plays nicely as a key to honouring family AND surviving (AND living fully?). which is a very difficult line.

also noticed and this list was intentional! maybe her former self holding the talisman to protect her fiancé would have included him. but now, she's lived too much ache to put him as a reason... for me this shows that as much as she cares (her love is no less!) her heart and wisdom is much much wider than just romance.

exactly! i love how the scenes show their complicity on this understanding without being explicit... its brillant. also jinqi was extremely affected when he realized but he went to her when he was composed and it did not escalate , which is very 'against the current'

the slow burn would have been out of character for them both... they both have strong beliefs and mindset, and they were very direct since the grave reveal . I do think however that a little bit of dialogue upon their reunion would have been nice!!

Some people give a show a chance with more episodes because it really takes time to warm up... there are things i really loooooove in this cdrama!
particularly 2 episodes:
1- the episode in the field, with the game competition, the feeling from that episode was so special!
2- the episode with the attack on the city, so fast paced but the action was phenomenal and how it unfolds it really keeps you guessing.

this show is finally growing on me but at first i really needed to adjust to the overly dramatic cuts of the story

Zhou Ye has taken skilled fighter roles in other cdramas, but i doubt you want to see same actress in 2shows at the same time!

exactly! that was so extreme. it was very refreshing to see him finally live by his rules instead of the elders and supporting his sisters decisions for example... but what he did for his own marriage was two big red lines so far.

from the cdramas i've seen so far, getting a happy arc mid-show is an omen of a tragedy, so hopefully they get the spring ever after at the end😭🙏🙏

absolutely give it a try! against the current is a great script and strong production! PoJ had a fire start and cinematic incredible moments, but the second half fell short when they left for the city.
this show is more rounded, realistic and you have more story arcs, nuanced characters, a nice journey. we are still far from the last episodes, but so far it exceeded the bar.

'if he would just listen to her for a second' would solve everything😭😭😭 she told him already but he is so much in his head.
while he is doing a lot of extreme things( drugging!!!) their dynamic is quite relatable when a couple has a deep disagreement.
