I don't think that Fan Xian is actually that OP, just that there are many people who helped him. And I remember that Wang Juan (the screenwriter) said that other characters were just helping Fan Xian on the surface and would become his resistances later on. Haven't finish on the series tho, may need someone else to confirm this.

Nope, start with something lighter imho, unless you are really into this genre. Another reason being this drama is one of the best C-dramas (as rated by many), so if you start with this, it may be difficult to find drama which is as good or even better
