ShuHe adored DZA since he was a child. He was in danger since little and DZA protected him. . This continue throughout his life. In ep 1 he was concerned for the triumphant return of his brother. He loved his bro but above all he feared him. So ShuHe was surrounded by crazy men who want to harm him, including his father and the minister. This series is not black and white. It is full of moral dilemmas. . ShuHe was at odd with himself while loving DZA. He loved his country and when his lover killed his brother he left him with impossible choices. This is what he stabbed DZA in the bridge. He acknowledge DZA loved him, but DZA didn't understand him. DZA was very much an assassin despite his love for ShuHe. He wanted everything: his revenge and his lover. Shu He love DZA until his last breath. He wanted redemption for himself and, he said clearly, didn't wanted to die after DZA. He also knew he was going to be killed the second DZA die. He wanted to go with dignity.
Re-watching - ep 3 = the most sensual hand watching in a Chinese drama + nose touching. We learnt about Crown Prince terrifying ambition. He wanted to conquer the world but he is a psycho too. This contrast greatly with the benevolent image of DZA as emperor later on. What was the significance of the string? I think it represented the fracture of the brothers bond. Crown prince was so envious of the King getting interested on SuHe and gifting him a special brocade. He throwing the string in the pond and later looking for it in desperation represent his contradictory feelings for SuHe. The Lovers - as premonition, when drunk SuHe told DZA that he wanted to reciprocate with his own life the times DZA risked his life for him. He also told him he was the only person that make him feel happy. Big statements indeed considering he very much was still distrusting DZA. Interesting the minister told SuHe that very likely DZA was a spy from Jibei, but it kind of wash away from SuHe. He wanted to hold into his longing feelings for her future lover.
