In a state of perpetual exhaustion

I feel like I am watching a Chinese version of a British costume drama I usually see on Masterpiece Theater. The…
Does it remind you of Jane Austen's Pride of Prejudice and Emma? If it does, I will give this a go. I find those types of stories entertaining.

well-written review πŸ‘ I think this is the downside of cutting down number of episodes in xianxia dramas that's…
I felt the Chong Zhao and Fu Ling romance was forced. I didn't buy it. I don't see the chemistry they're talking about either. But that's just me as I hardly see chemistry in most hetero couples. I'm a BL kind of girl. lol I also like Chang Hua Sen as a villain more, I thought he looked too boyish as Chong Zhao next to a more mature and sensual Dai Lu Wa as Fu Ling. The letters subplot would've been alright if he actually developed feelings for her even when she was the murderous psycho. That for some reason he couldn't understand why he was drawn to her and wanted to convince her to leave Cold Spring Palace. But he didn't. He was still very much obsessed with Bai Shou. I get that a child would fall in love with a secret admirer so it makes sense that he became infatuated with Bai Shou because that was the only reason why he supposedly loved her. They could've made Fu Ling more sympathetic by making her act differently around him, making sure he doesn't dirty his hands instead of encouraging him to kill and be part of Cold Spring Palace. She could've been ruthless with others but a completely different person with him.

Hi there fellow crazy CP fan! lol

Fan Yue and Bai Shuo is now officially my no.1 favourite Drama CP. Sorry Tian Yao and Yan Hui being pushed down…
Oh same! I'm not into romance or CPs and I very rarely ship hetero couples so in C-drama they're the only two couples I ship that I will watch no matter how bad the drama is. πŸ˜… The downside is I will have difficulty watching them being paired with others from now on. I couldn't stand seeing Neo with other actresses after I saw him with Zhou Ye. Same with her. I like Wang Xingyue but I'm very hesitant to watch Scent of Time or her upcoming drama with Cheng Lei. I will definitely dislike Bai Lu's pairing with Joseph Zheng even though I like him too. And Ruipeng's pairing with Li Landi will not sit well with me either. πŸ˜‚

Yes, she handpicked Ao Ruipeng to be her leading man. She saw his potential and she was right.

Apart from Lulu & Pengpeng, I think Qi Feng actor stood out the most for me. I SEE so much potential on him.
Agreed!

Maybe it's just me but there were instances when he was Mo Li that I was reminded of Liu Xueyi when he's playing villainous roles like the one in Love and Redemption.

Where did they go? I saw that video of them on a plane earlier.
Oh, so that was from last year.

Oh yes, Chang Hua Sen should play more antagonistic roles. It suits him.

No worries. We all have our preferences. I also agree that Ao Ruipeng did well in this drama. I especially loved seeing him as Jingyuan. It's just that Dai Lu Wa and Liang Xue Feng's portrayals really caught me off guard. And I cried the most because of them.

Now that the drama has ended, I want to pose this question. Except for Bai Lu's (because I know many here are fans of hers, including me, and she plays the central character in this drama), whose performance stood out to you the most? I'll start... As much as I love Ao Ruipeng, and those who have interacted with me know that he's a favorite of mine, it was Dai Lu Wa's portrayal of the borderline psychotic Fu Ling and Bai Xi that really caught my attention. It's not easy playing this type of character so kudos to her. Honorable mention is Liang Xue Feng as Chen Ye/Qi Feng. He is such an emotive actor. I now find myself looking forward to his future projects.

How is this a happy ending if majority of the side characters died!
It did end happily because according to Sa Ding Ding's character, "Heaven", everyone who sacrificed their lives for the greater good will be given another chance to come back in another life. That is why Fu Ling told both Bai Shou and Chong Zhao that in the next life, they will be together again. They don't show it in the drama but you can assume that they will be reborn and find each other again. Maybe you just wanted a different happy ending that's why you can't call it as such.

Yep. Try to rewatch the episode where Jingyuan comes back and he has a conversation with Bai Shou and later on, Fan Yue.

9 inch difference!
The actresses usually wear platform shoes underneath their hanfu and they stand on additional platforms for close-ups and kissing scenes.

I also got bored when they introduced the love interest and I was watching that on an illegal site since I don't have a subscription to WeTV so it wasn't exactly convenient. Blossom is on Netflix and it's relatively shorter.

So what is everyone watching next?
I still haven't seen Blossom so I'll check that out. I also need to finish Guardians of the Dafeng. I had to put that on hold because I no longer had time to juggle two dramas.

Its just personal preference. The main CP is not bad, but for some people they watched it for the second couple…
This! I also like the second couple. Heck, I love Dai Lu Wa as Fu Ling. I never hated her character because I was waiting how things would turn out. If written and acted well, she could definitely be redeemed. I also never thought of Chong Zhao as a useless and annoying character because his earlier personality actually reflects that of his origins and divine mantle. And I never complained about Bai Shou's arrogance and brattiness or Ao Ruipeng's emotionless portrayal of Fan Yue because I thought maybe there was a reason for those things. Turns out I was right about these four characters. Fu Ling had a very good reason for doing the things she did, Chong Zhao is the Hidden Lord Mo Li so his attachment with Bai Shou was merely a continuation of his obsession with Xingyue. Bai Shou went through significant character development and Fan Yue had every reason to act cold and distant. But when faced with death and the idea of losing Bai Shou, he broke down, showing considerable anguish. Ruipeng also proved he has the acting chops and "chemistry" with Bai Lu as Jingyuan. Some people have taken back what they've said about him. lol Sometimes it doesn't hurt to keep an open mind.
