It's Black Comedy/ Dark Comedy, actually. MDL considers it as a tag.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_the_Queen%27s_Umbrella#:~:text=drama%5B2%5D-,Black%20comedy%5B2%5D,-Created%20by
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't 'dark comedy' comedy that stems from dark elements of storytelling (eg:- Barry)? Having watched Under the Queen's Umbrella, I didn't see any dark jokes in their comedy. Their comedy was standard light hearted moments that were amusing to break heavy, political scenes (which they had a lot of). To qualify as 'dark comedy' shouldn't things like how a person died be funny? - Where you feel like, this is horrible of me, but I'm laughing anyway because it's hilarious!!!
There were a few funny moments, but I really don't think they qualify as dark comedy. For one, the funny moments all happened between the younger princes when they were among themselves and playing around, as kids do. And they happened when the Queen got wind of her idiot sons doing something idiotic once again in the sitcom Modern Family way.
To classify this drama as dark comedy... It doesn't make sense, honestly.
1. How many 2022 released dramas did you watch? 76 - Completed. 23 - Still to be completed.
2. What country did you watch the most in 2022? South Korea
3. What genre(s) do you usually watch? Drama and Comedy.
4. What is your top drama listed in this article? (Can be more than one) Under The Queen's Umbrella, Reset, Weak Hero Class 1.
5. What is your top drama NOT listed in this article? (Can be more than one. If you don't agree with dramas rated by the majority of MDLers, this is the chance for you to convince us why you think your choice of dramas deserved to be on the top.) As much as I love Under The Queen's Umbrella, I don't think it's primarily a comedy, but a drama. If we're going with Comedy, nothing beats Gaus Electronics. That was the funniest drama in 2022.
6. How was your drama journey in 2022? I didn't finish quite a few dramas that I started.
7. What is your wish or plan in dramaland in 2023? I want to watch more Cdramas. And I want to complete dramas quicker.
1. Uk and CP going in and out make sense, because they were let in and out by JSR. Jinmu getting out totally doesnt…
Yeah, there are a few plot points that don't make sense to me. I'm mostly annoyed with how they make it seem like the priestesses of Jinyowon are so powerful only to fold within seconds and without a fight.
I feel exactly the same. I’m having a hard time finishing the last episode because of these exact reasons. Plus…
This is 100% me. I get super annoyed when writers say a person is powerful and then show the opposite. The fact that all these mages have armies and there was no epic battle between the houses for the firebird is a lost opportunity honestly.
I've been waiting this entire season for Naksu, but we didn't get anything. I feel cheated. lol.
1. There are no doors Uk can't open because of the the ice stone. Furthermore, the portal for the turtle was opened…
Thanks. You helped clear up a few things, but I do have a few more questions if you don't mind indulging me.
1. I understand how everyone can enter the portal, but after saying things like, mages have gotten lost and never returned and it's vast etc., the queen and her nephew found Jin Mu pretty easily. And we never found out how Jin Mu managed to leave.
2. Even with all the powerful mages, why did none of the families, who head their own armies, actually bring them to play? They didn't show how the powerful mages got in, which is usually either by stealth or force etc.
3. Jin Mu loves himself the most, so the chances of him releasing the firebird himself, even when trapped, knowing that it would kill him seems out of character to me. I also wonder if he could release the firebird, because he asked the members of the UA to release it instead of doing it himself.
I'm halfway through the last episode and I'm honestly annoyed. I can't take any of the deaths seriously because of the MASSIVE plot holes.
1. Jin Mu saying that people who have entered the world where the plaque is have found it hard to leave and they die blah blah... Meanwhile, six different characters within the span of a day use the entrance as a revolving door. It's super easy, barely an inconvenience.
2. Intruders break into Jinyowon like it's a walk in the park. Do they have more than 2 - 4 armed guards???
3. Is the second daughter of Jinyowon SO dumb that she didn't think of closing the door after Jin Mu went inside so as to lock him in there until he dies??? Is her mother SO dumb so as not to promise to accompany him to find the fire bird and then use one of the artefacts against him???? - And let's not forget how they made a BIG fuss about finding things in Jinyowon in S1 only for Jin Mu to casually walk in and out like it's nothing.
I mean, when you build a world, you create the lore, why break your own rules??? -
Tbh, the 2ML is perfect for the FL. He balances her out perfectly. He's positive to her negativity; he's uncomplicated to her complicated life; he's decisive and hard-working, just like she is.
Alas, in real life, people who carry trauma with them very rarely, if ever, find the perfect fit in a partner attractive.
The complexity of the characters is such a win in my book.
Sang Soo is someone who is used to suppressing what he wants in life because of his background. That lead to his hesitation on their date. He is emotional, but an over-thinker, and he's not someone to make a decision unless pushed because he doesn't know if he has a right to want what he wants.
Soo Young has been hurt so many times that she drops people when they show even a second of hesitation towards starting a friendship or even a relationship with her. She needs someone who knows what they want, who is confident in their love for her because she takes disappointment harder than most. She doesn't want to waste time with people who don't know what they want because she knows it means that, at the end, they will come to the realisation that they don't want her. So, she's cautious, and not optimistic when starting any relationship with anyone.
Mi Kyung is the perfect example of someone who has the two main things in life to be that confident: a happy, stable family full of love and money. She has grown up with no trauma, no loss and as a result she is friendly and confident.
Jong Hyun is someone who powers himself with hope. All he has going for him is hope, and that's what keeps him going and that's what gives him such a positive mindset.
The direction is amazing, because the chemistry between Sang Soo and Soo Young is palpable.
And the discussion of classism is a very real problem in Asian societies, so I'm glad that even though this is a romance, it's a story about how society views you can impact the decisions you make.
There's something to be said about the way people are reacting to the FL's arrogance, whether it's the characters…
Completely agree. Viewers love arrogance in men (people call it attractive) and hate arrogance in women (which they call unattractive). Women need to be capable but humble I guess. The double standard is mind-blowing.
I'm on episode 3, and I'm wondering why all of Ji Eun's 'love interests' are "nice guys" with red flags...
Ex No. 1 only wants her when she's with another guy. Ex No. 2 shows no interest in her work, breaks up with her, and suddenly wants to get back together when she's at her worst...? Random Youngling who is sooooo creepy and stalker-ish, anyone should run the opposite direction.

I highly recommend this.

P.S. - The OST is fire!!!

Talk about a reverse easter egg (since Black came first).
