Extreme poverty and this is one of the famously poor and remote regions. China was only starting to take off in the 90s, and that was mostly in major coastal cities. And then there was major changes each decade, if not every 5 years. But there were still pockets that lagged.

I believe the real story for She and Her Girls was referencing early 2010s even, which even surprised me there was still such backward poverty that late. But when it's deep in mountain villages, or barren deserts, it kinda makes sense.

There really is a lot of parallel between drama and real life as Li Meng probably thinks she's a better actress than TSY and a lot of people, and fortunately for her TSY might be nice enough to not make a big deal about her behavior.

Yeah she has a lot of lived experience to help her play the crazy roles well.

1. If there was a negative reaction from ZL in ep35 in court, it was for General Wang being demoted for unauthorized use of the army to protect ZL. (But it was a soft punishment, as the standard would have been prison or execution)
2. Yes, the Emperor's priority is funds, and ordered a 3-day investigation to turn up the funds, but he was not encouraging Yu to find a scapegoat. Rather, Yu had calculated that he could sacrifice his son as a valuable-enough scapegoat to placate the Emperor and ministers, hand over the funds, for the hopes of still keeping some power. That as long as he's not executed/imprisoned, he can make a comeback. His hope was that the son doesn't get executed, and after comeback, Yu can bail his son out.
2b. The calculus for the Emperor was that he needs cooperation from the Yus in order to turn up the maximum amount of funds and their salt network. If he simply kills them, some funds might be lost. So he needs to spare them a little, and leave enough incentive for cooperation. Emperor was intent on punishing Minister Yu, but Yu wanted to try the gambit of swapping in his son as scapegoat. And it's not just out of pure callousness, it's actually rational on their part. Because if Minister Yu survives, he's capable enough to pull a comeback. But if the son survives, he's not capable.

3. Zhao Ling wanted to retire because he (and FL) never wanted to be in the capitol in the first place. Only came to the capitol because if he doesn't fight the Yus, they will eventually harm his family. And he also knows the treachery of the capitol, having power, and serving the emperor. So after taking out the biggest risk of his family, and doing the emperor a huge favor, he could make that request to retire to a quiet post in the NW, where there are more friends and allies, and away from the messy politics.

It resolves pretty cleverly, good guys win, mostly happy ending.

Though it's also set up for possible Season 2.

If that's the case, could he conceivably go through the 2nd time with only a few key adjustments and pull off a victory? Consequently, it wouldn't take that many episodes to compress the overlapping plotlines, show the key adjustments, and the new resolution? This would be my guess if they want to fit the 2nd round into the remaining episodes. But I've also not seen the Donghua or anything prior to this.

Also, is this the full arc of the source material, or are there multiple seasons even if we resolve this as in the Donghua?

Oh interesting, thanks for the cultural lesson. To me it felt more like she started as Fu Fangfei (The Double) and then grew into Fu Yingluo (Yanxi), but with better acting than Wu Jingyan.
