She had been raped, the only way to prevent people from knowing that–and the shame associated with it–would be to claim murder. Moreover claire didn't even see Natty when she wanted to visit her, so she couldn't take any steps but one could see the guilt eating away at her. From a logistic point of view, Natty would never have got a sentence or would be in a juvenile home and not prison with a much shorter sentence, even in case of murder.
