It was republican. So prob 70 years ago? If you want a good lakorns, watch GMM and CH3. CH7 is focusing on more…
ooh so helpful info, thanks :) after this I wasn't going to see any Tai product but then started "Hormones" which is great, realistic, good characters and though I can't understand how same country can product soo different "social moral" dramas but still, there can be other good dramas... I'm tired of Kdramas, they are often good but after many drama almost every story seems same and cliche, soo new teritories are good ))
in 90% Asian romance dramas you know rom the beginning who will end up with whom and for me that's worst thing and not interesting, I know even what kind troubles and in which part of the drama will they face up... so what's interesting in it?
if this drama is different (as you mentioned) I'm happy and going to watch.
another thing you mentioned as something not so good - " Don't expect to see much pure and innocent romance either." - GREAT! secont thing I'm tired of in Asian dramas, fairy tale-ish unrealistic perfect love/relationships )))
it's impossible to watch this horrible FL... yes there are tones of cringes, cliches and super primitive vulgar dialogues, characters and plot turns, but most hard part to watch is FL with 0 self respect, I've seen weak FL's but never on this level, she is treated like trash, beaten and still loves and protects her abusers, plus "protects" with most silly primitive stupid ways.... OMG it's not calls kind, it's calls super stupid, even a dog wont be always loyal and thankful to abuser master...
ML and FL are more like SML and SFL (especially anti hero-ish ML) and kind hearted SML and positive lovely but poor SFL are more like ML and FL. Plus all 4 main lead have almost equal screen time (though FL maybe has more and except of 4 lead's screen time there are lots of scenes/story line of FL's family). Even romance of second couple looks more like main romance and main couples relationship somehow cold and uncertain. I would say in this drama 4 leads are equally mains. I'm in the middle of the drama and now it's like this. P.S. as everyone mentions, second couple as characters and as romance are better, though I still have interest in main couple, because 1. I like ML actor 2. I'm interested in ML as character, we still don't know what kind of person he is, what's his goal and what he really feels about his close people. Though I can't see chemistry in main couple and will be bored/skip after story will be clear.
So several wives is normal in Tai? in 21th century ... OMG I was so right to avoid lakorns, but I thouth they are just primitive cliche low level soap operas but multi wives gave me bigger cringe
I do understand your frustration but also think some of theses are part of the making of a fairytale the whole…
first of, I loved your article, great job! second - yes, I understand that this purity-destiny things are charm of Asian dramas, but I just think it's too much, almost every drama with same "charm" becomes just taboo. Plus in modern world it cares massage that women should have much more boundaries, even natural desires which can be pure becaouse of love is seen as something bad and dirty. Sometimes I have feeling I'm watching story from middle ages. Kdramas were quite different and more taboo free before 2013-16, even female characters body language was more natural/free. Yes even in western culture woman's sexuality is treated differently, but now you can't see it in movies/tv series, I understand Asia is different but modern dramas should not so much different, because even older Kdramas were much more free. we are talking here that male leads treating females even slightly rude is bad (of course it's bad) but writers/dramas treat them worse with this taboos that if woman had another man in past or if she wants kiss/sex she isn't good, woman like that can't be worth to be main lead/target of sympathy, on the other hand we should like main females with zero self respect, weak, "kind" (someone who is kind to even them who treats her like trash, it's not kind, it's stupid) and worst Cinderela versions....
in "worst male lead's" list one of most voted is Itaewon Class... Why is ML bad? because he didn't loved FL???? He had other goals, wasn't dating and loved SFL (it was more habit, idea then rational love, but still, it's his personal). He didn't treated bad FL or SFL, was really nice person, hard working good guy.... so just because he didn't saw FL as romantic interest, it makes him bad?? when there are sooo many really bad, toxic jerk main leads in dramaland...
what gives me cringe more and more in Kdramas or any Asian dramas: 1. ALWAYS FIRST LOVE - why should love be first? if main leads loved other people previously it means this love isn't worthy, isn't strong, pure or what? even if main leads were in love wit other people, drama needs to show/main leads say, that previous love wasn't real love, maybe it even wasn't love... So WHY? I've seen dramas, where main(s) loved other and it wasn't only half or one episode pre story, we could see it was strong love and continued for several episodes, and then when ML and FL fall in love, they say previous love wasn't love... I don't understand this complexes about pure love, which should be first/virgin love. 2. INOCENT/NEVER KISSED FL - why Asian dramas have this need for females to be soo "pure", I mean 30 years old woman never has sex, bf or even never been kissed, some may say "it's culture" but never like someone, never been in relationship isn't normal, I mean it can be but not 90% of dramas... 3. MEET IN CHILDHUD IS MUST - also 30=/- old woman who never liked man, still remembers and misses some boy who she met 1-2 times while being 7-10 years old. Of course it will be ML and their love was fated.... 4. WOMEN NEVER WANT KISS/SEX - Also why should female leads always being against intimecy, even light kiss from loved ones makes them shy and/or angry, like it's something bad and every time loved one wants to kiss (women almost never kiss) she should be shy, saying "oooh what are you doing".... WHY? I'm not even talking about sex, which is taboo in 80-90% of dramas, but even if drama recognizes existence of sex, it always something that only men can want, and if women do it, it's like they are doing it just for men, like it is hardest work...
you say ML loved another wanted to marry her but then with "no reason" fall for FL... soo? why is it problem? if person loved someone he/she can't fall out and fall in for someone else? this is exactly what I like, what is real, not the same plot in almost every kdrama when no matter age of main leads, it's first love... in real life people fall in love not only one time in life... it's my second lakorn, I only watched Kdramas and few Crdalas/Jdramas, because let's be honest lakorns are very primitive, low level soap operas, but I tried and if you don't look/skip everything else romance/chemistry are good, at list I liked first and now this couple too
p.s. I don't like when one main lead falls for another but plot can't show viewer why, when we just should trust writers, when mains don't have chemistry or/and one of them has nothing to be liked, but look at this FL she is soo amazing, soo natural, beautiful and different, hilarious and "alive", not like any other women, how can any guy near her not fall for her?
It's not at all similar since both belong to two completely different genres but it's as good as mr queen👍🏻Worth…
thank you, I'll watch it 100% I just wanted to know what to wait, somehow from synopsis I thought it was more funny then serious. she is really great, I rarely like female characters and actresses so much!
PLS who are watching answer me ^^ I'm watching Age of youth now and I'm in love in Park Eun Bin as actress (she sure is very talented) and as character (amazing funny girl like no one), so I checked her filmography so now I'm here. from synopsis I kind of have feeling/hope it's something like Mr. Queen, (drama subject and gifted actress gives hope), so I'm I wrong? does this drama have that funny vibe and something amazing like it was in "Mr. Queen" ???
agree 100% and I'm glad you love "Cruel City" it still is really best drama in that genre. I loved this one too, in the beginning I thought it even could compare (not same level but could be close) to Cruel City, but at some point it becomes repetitive, by episode 10(+/-) I already knew there wont be anything new and big anymore, he will search her and love her till the end. I'm not saying ML should give up on her, but after first few episodes you have expectations that this isn't usual action or usual romance, you expect more, because first half is really great and different, and you think second part will show also great plot and unexpected events, turns of story and character, like in "Cruel City" or "Kairos". just "saving girl he loves" becomes repetitive and for me disappointing, I was waiting something like it was in Kairos, when at the half way ML realizes she wasn't who he thought, or dynamic changes of situation like in "Cruel City", but not 16 episodes of: lost girl, searching/fighting for her ML, madly in love ML and modern Romeo/Juliet vibe. Drama has one of greatest potential in first half or at list first episodes but then it's just another good action/saving FL/revenge drama.
so as someone, who values Cruel City and had very correct issues with this one, I think you like exactly what I'm searching for, have you seen any other dramas like Cruel City? or even close to it?
p.s. even 70 years ago ... still shocking... :(
if this drama is different (as you mentioned) I'm happy and going to watch.

same could be said about "Hit the Top"

are you kidding me? I can't believe what I'm seeing ... in 21th century in South Korea? OMG!!!
she is really great, I rarely like female characters and actresses so much!
