He knows that she knows him and that he is her secret crush and the protagonist in her novel but what he knows and she doesn't know is that she is his crush and that the book from the other author 'poet' is his unsent drafts. So he is playing along . As someone put it they are gauging each other so they can be clear before deciding whether to put their past behind or they should reacquaint each other with their real, frank faces and reveal all of themselves.
I find this kind of story telling sweet and interesting.
