The only biggest complaint I would have against Jaywalk is how they made the years of contract very long, like 10 years or something. The cool thing about Cdramas made in the 90s and early 2000s is that, they don't give a sh!t about "romance" and "who is the FL" but they focus on professionalism, making sure everything is executed very professionally. Even when the plot can get boring, all they care is executing the show professionally, or what I mean is, they make sure everything looks realistic. For example, there is another show this actor Huang Haibing did with Zhang Ting, she played as the Fire General Yang Pei Feng. While I like both leads in there, that show didn't seem to have any plot at all, but it was still engaging because of how professional all the shots were. They care about making sure the acting is realistic. Making sure the fighting action scenes are realistic and creative, not just making babies moves any noobs can come up with. Making sure each and every camera angles and lighting were shot with careful attention, not just filming things randomly like today.
So to answer your question who is the FL, there is no FL, and directors back then don't give a sh!t about those type of things. The truth is, the audience don't give a sh!t either, it's just a thing today people do so they can make fanwar because their idols need some "noise" to stay relevant or make extra bucks. What made this show so memorable is the fact that there is no true FL, and it's controversial who the ML really loved. Today, shows like this cannot deliver anymore, because one thing is directors don't know how to be professional, they can't make things look realistic enough and things will come off pretentious, on top of that, the audience are also mostly 99% water armies paid to say sh!t. I don't know what "hard work" you're talking about regarding to ZLY. For Esther, I noticed her ever since Youth 2018, she boldly played a mean girl who even ended up being kidnapped by her ex and tortured, her scenes were very bold and made a long term impression. She slowly climbed to lead roles.
For ZLY, she might had starred as extras here and there numerous times in her early days, but always appearing for 5-15 minutes, making NO IMPRESSION on anyone... She relied on really big names like Zhou Xun, Tang Guo Qiang, Ray Liu, Ning Jing, Xu Zheng, etc. when she played extras for them. The method didn't work as those big names were aging and the rising stars were Yang Mi and Liu Shi Shi. She is still bitter about it because she is in the same age group as them but couldn't get famous at the same time. She promoted NONE of her early works such as The Amateur Imperial Bodyguard (2010), a 30 EPISODES drama where she was the LEAD and she got that role in 2010, you can do the math, she started her acting career in 2016, it was only 4 years and she rose to leading roles. The reason she won't promote them? Petty! She looks too different in 2010, she doesn't want anyone to know how she used to look. Then why the hell does she keeps on hiring writers to compare her with others all the time how they're so ugly but she's the prettiest? IDK! Maybe that's how hard she works! I have to thanks the character Zi Qi, and Ding Yuxi who played it so believably, the final scene was just too deep and touching. It's like seeing Fu Zhou curing himself and it helps us cure our own selves too, those of us who can relate to him. This is more than just a fantasy or xianxia drama. It is unfair that this genre gets stomped on in the last decade, just because some insecure females started categorizing this genre "NON-SERIOUS" to get rid of competitors... serious or not, this might be the first drama that ever touched me so spiritually, the ending in Scent of Time was also very meaningful but this one is on another level. TSOPG is definitely a must watch and must finish, but it's not addicting and I can wait without any anxiety. I dropped it for now, and plan to binge watching it later. I believe I surpassed 15 episodes and there was still no chemistry between any of the leads. Storywise, it's watchable. Romance wise, I don't like any of the male characters. While LGIEF is way too addicting, if anyone starts it, there's no way they can drop it anymore, the pacing is fast and the chemistry is just too strong. Zhang Wan Yi really shines in this role. I love his real life personality as well. Ren Min reminds me of Li Xiaolu who won golden horse at age 16. For example, there is another show this actor Huang Haibing did with Zhang Ting, she played as the Fire General Yang Pei Feng. While I like both leads in there, that show didn't seem to have any plot at all, but it was still engaging because of how professional all the shots were.
They care about making sure the acting is realistic. Making sure the fighting action scenes are realistic and creative, not just making babies moves any noobs can come up with. Making sure each and every camera angles and lighting were shot with careful attention, not just filming things randomly like today.

The truth is, the audience don't give a sh!t either, it's just a thing today people do so they can make fanwar because their idols need some "noise" to stay relevant or make extra bucks. What made this show so memorable is the fact that there is no true FL, and it's controversial who the ML really loved. Today, shows like this cannot deliver anymore, because one thing is directors don't know how to be professional, they can't make things look realistic enough and things will come off pretentious, on top of that, the audience are also mostly 99% water armies paid to say sh!t. Shows today must rely on another strategy to fit their level of expertise in filming. Back then, it's all about realism. You can say both are FL, or you can say Fei Fei is the FL and not Qi Qi, and you can also say Qi Qi is the FL but not Fei Fei, and it all makes sense. You can also say the same about whether the ML likes both ladies, or one vs the other. It all makes sense.

For ZLY, she might had starred as extras here and there numerous times in her early days, but always appearing for 5-15 minutes, making NO IMPRESSION on anyone... She relied on really big names like Zhou Xun, Tang Guo Qiang, Ray Liu, Ning Jing, Xu Zheng, etc. when she played extras for them. The method didn't work as those big names were aging and the rising stars were Yang Mi and Liu Shi Shi. She is still bitter about it because she is in the same age group as them but couldn't get famous at the same time. She promoted NONE of her early works such as The Amateur Imperial Bodyguard (2010), a 30 EPISODES drama where she was the LEAD and she got that role in 2010, you can do the math, she started her acting career in 2016, it was only 4 years and she rose to leading roles. The reason she won't promote them? Petty! She looks too different in 2010, she doesn't want anyone to know how she used to look. Then why the hell does she keeps on hiring writers to compare her with others all the time how they're so ugly but she's the prettiest? IDK! Maybe that's how hard she works! There is an article out there comparing how Esther looks ugly and nothing like a princess while ZLY looks like the real princess. Stupid AF! ZLY sure works too hard in marketing.

Zhang Wan Yi really shines in this role. I love his real life personality as well. Ren Min reminds me of Li Xiaolu who won golden horse at age 16. Back in the days when natural beauty was still appreciated, Li Xiaolu was considered a great beauty. I find Ren Min beautiful while in today's standard everyone wants the same replicated silicon face. Ren Min will do really well in filming, I didn't watch her movies but Zhang Wan Yi did his homework, during their interview he was so sincere, he said he watched her works already and liked it so much so he was excited to work with her. I can tell from the photos of those movies that she performed really well just like what he said.
