What makes this series work, is that in so many countries all over the world, there are people living on the fringe who are like the characters in this show and that is both (as in the character of Maya) horrifying and (as in the characters of Keito and Chihiro) heartbreaking at the same time. I am absolutely amazed that Keito / Haoran and Chihiro are still alive. I also cringe in horror when I see those girls in Maya's place and think of the horrors they have had to endure (the suit case scene was super disturbing) and will anyone come rescue them. This show is raw in its depiction of life on the street for the most vulnerable and those who take advantage of them. We all would like to think "Oh, I would have run away" or "I would have just got a job" or, or, or......but in reality, until we are in a situation like either of the main characters, it is hard to say what we would do to survive. I am impressed with both characters that they made it this far, they are survivors and hopefully find some peace and contentment in the end.
I agree with a lot of the comments that say the concept was good, but the execution fell short. I think the reason is this series tries to be film noir in the style it was filmed in, but there was no true anti-hero to make it work. There was, to me, a lack of chemistry with the lead actors as well and a bit of a cop out in regards to the ending. The series started off really well, but went downhill in the last few episodes. Two more things, the character of Tonkla should have been listed as a main character and not a support role and I hope to see Bas and Fuaiz in another series together. 7/10 from me.
So here’s what I think as someone reading the manga and how much the show used. The show only goes to the end…
If I have to read a Manga to understand a series, then the series is not good. The series should be able to stand alone and have a beginning, middle and end where the show focuses on the 2 leads and show their progress to a definitive end whether they end up together or not and the ending makes sense, This show did not do that, To me, if this is how the manga went, then it would be a snore fest as a read.
I love this series. The female lead is one of the most annoying characters I have ever watched and I loved her because it made sense to have her act that way. Moon Geun Young portrayed her perfectly! This show deserves a higher rating, it is really good!!!
I mean there are plenty of arguements over the 4 Minutes page on whether or not that counts as a BL so your mileage…
Point taken. I get that and maybe 4minutes is more gay than BL. Maybe I should have used (to name a few) Together With Me, Tharn/Type, Bad Buddy, Last Twilight, Not Me, Midnight Chicken, If it's With You....etc. Enemy (or opposites) to lovers trope.
I do not want to be crucified, but I also want to be honest in my opinion. I thought this show was just okay and not a a true BL. I mean sure there were confessions, but honestly after episode 7 and the introduction of a 3rd character (which is female) this show went down hill. If you look at the definition of what a BL actually represents, this show is not it. I know that BL's come in all genre's, but I do not watch BL for a slow, slice of life with girls added to the mix who get more screen time then the leads and before you come at me, I LOVED Our Dining Table which is slow, slice of life and even without intimate scenes those guys had chemistry and you knew were into each other and no female's to add angst to it or waste scenes that could be better served to have more of the two male leads adding to their story and progress. I have been watching BL's for a very long time and if you enjoyed this show, great, but for those of us that like our BL's (Whatever the genre) that focus on the 2 main leads who have a romance even if the romance is not the healthiest (think 4Minutes) with maybe a side couple or couples who are also men and women in the background as friends, then this show is not for you. In the beginning maybe it started as BL, but to me the BL aspect got lost along the way. Since I am nitpicking. I will add that the final hug looked super weird from the angle it was filmed.
Super childish and unappreciated. If you do not want someone to take your comment/opinion seriously, then do not post it.
As for the series, there are plenty of slow moving, simple series out there that are excellent (One Room Angel, Our Dining Table, Light on Me, I Cannot Reach You, Old Fashion Cupcake, Perfect Propose, A Shoulder to Cry on...to name a few) but this one, is not it. The Taishin character (or maybe it was the way the actor portrayed him) was very unlikable and a lot of the time creepy and very cringy. Also, there were so many scenes that just dragged and added nothing to the story or moved the story along. I do believe if they cut the series in half and made it 5 episodes, that could only have helped it. That is my opinion.
A very boring show ends with a very boring special. I honestly do not expect much from a bl, but I do expect a bl relationship and in this show I did not see any chemistry between the leads. I watched most of it while it played in the background as I did other things or on fast forward because there were too many unnecessary filler scenes. If the show had been condensed to 5 episodes it could have worked better. This show was a snooze fest. Also what was with that girl writing a story about the two leads and stalking them? How annoying. I gave it 4.5 out of 10.
