It's very normal in the Asian culture. I'm a second generation immigrant and my parents control me so much even though I live in the USA. My dad was ready to murder me because I stay after school.

My friend who was Chinese went to the mall with me and we got subway. Her dad came screaming and yelling at her because she didn't do something he wanted her to do about sats.

If you watch enough Asian drama you'll see that there is no boundaries between the parents and the children. It's all about authoritarian. Granted it has been improved greatly from how it was before but that type of system is still there.
