I was surprised too but like I said it was logical. How can a guy who is infatuated to a married woman who was herself a terrible person and treated him like dog poo can be a good person himself? He was totally deluded and obsessed from the start to the end.
What I hated most about him was he agreed to marry the younger sister when he did not even like her one bit and manipulated her. What a clown.
It doesn't suit him on the surface but this is the complexity of the character. He looks playful and a fun teasing guy but the way he wielded his sword at these soldiers. He did not try to injure them, give them a chance to retreat or survive, his blows were fast, short and to kill and he killed them all. The guy is no joke.
