Pretty but Hollow. Overexplained Dialogue, Weak Acting, and Formulaic Story

The drama begins quite charmingly, with humorous moments, a light tone, and attractive winter scenery. Although the landscapes are visually appealing, some scenes look artificial due to strong filters. The early village setting feels refreshing compared with the usual palace focused dramas. One of the strongest aspects in the beginning is the female lead. She is portrayed as smart, practical, and capable, often solving problems through action rather than emotional reactions. Her performance is convincing, and among the first 14 episodes, she was the only character whose acting I consistently enjoyed.
However, many of the other performances feel weaker. Some of the younger supporting actors appear too inexperienced or simply too young for the roles they are meant to portray, which makes certain characters less believable.

Visually, the production looks polished and clearly well funded. The cinematography, costumes, and sets are attractive, but this drama seems to prioritize visual beauty over storytelling.

The music is another mixed element. There are too many background soundtracks throughout the drama, often played too loudly or used in scenes where silence or minimal scoring would have been more effective. I am not referring to the songs themselves, but to the constant background music, which many times feels intrusive.

In terms of storytelling, the script relies heavily on dialogue to explain the plot. Instead of allowing events and character behavior to reveal the story naturally, the characters frequently state motivations and past events directly. This type of exposition removes much of the suspense and makes certain scenes feel dull and overly explanatory.

Another issue is the repetition of familiar tropes. The drama includes several very common plot devices and predictable court politics. These elements have appeared in so many historical dramas, and their repeated use makes the story feel unoriginal and formulaic.

The romance also failed to create emotional engagement for me. Although the interactions between the main leads are pleasant and they look visually appealing together, I never felt a strong emotional connection to their relationship. Even though the story follows a slow-burn romantic structure, many other dramas manage to create emotional tension and chemistry from the beginning, which was largely absent here.

As the story progresses, the narrative begins to lose its initial charm. The relaxed pacing of the early village episodes gradually disappears, and the plot starts to feel compressed and uneven. Around episode 9, the introduction of new characters and past conflicts becomes rushed and poorly developed, making the story harder to follow. Later developments feel inconsistent, with certain scenes lacking clear logic or proper buildup. This weakens the overall narrative cohesion.

Despite a few original details, such as the female lead’s unusual profession as a pig butcher, which adds an unexpected and slightly gritty element, the overall storyline remains superficial, familiar and predictable.
As the story progresses, the pacing becomes uneven, the plot less coherent, the soundtrack overly heavy, and the other actors fail to impress. The drama eventually became boring for me, leading me to drop it after episode 14.

Ordinary and boring

I managed to watch six episodes—I kind of forced myself—but I just can't get through episode seven. The plot is so ordinary and predictable. I enjoy romance and sweet stories, but this one is just too generic.

Honestly, it doesn’t offer anything new, not even as a light distraction. If anything, it makes you more bored. The only reason I made it past the first episode was because of the main lead and the second lead.

Cheng Yi’s first flop drama

Neither inspiring nor entertaining. One moment he needs to learn how to fight and become a hero, and the next he is suddenly fighting like a hero—then again he doesn’t know how to do it, and the same loop repeats. The fights are boring. If it weren’t for him, I would have dropped it after episode 3, but I pushed myself to be patient and see how it would progress, only to be left disappointed.

I like this actor a lot, and I know he can deliver top performances, but in this drama something felt off and unnatural—from his acting, to how he looked, to the costumes. The pink outfit at the start didn’t suit him at all, and the rest looked cheap. The scene of him standing in the pouring rain with perfectly dry clothes and hair was ridiculous. The shallow conversations and cheap, banal comedy only made it worse. The script is boring.

I really didn’t enjoy anything about this drama, I’m not even sure what genre this drama was meant to be, since it doesn’t fit into any I’ve watched so far.

I am looking forward to his next two dramas, hopefully, the scripts and directors will make better use of his skills. I do like Cheng Yi very much, but I don’t want to be biased when rating something that, in my opinion, is simply not good. I also think he still has room to mature as an actor. This role didn’t suit him, or maybe the director wasn’t good enough, and he isn’t yet at the level to pull off all kinds of roles.
I couldn’t make it past episode 8.

A Stunning Follow-Up to My First C-Drama

After my emotional ride with The Legend of Hao Lan—my very first Chinese drama—I couldn’t let go of the connection between Li Haolan and Lü Buwei. I loved the actors so much that I searched for another drama featuring them together. That’s how I found Story of Yanxi Palace, my second Chinese drama, and it was another absolute “wow” experience.

The production is simply stunning: intricate costumes, exquisite sets, and cinematography that makes every scene feel like a painting. The writing is brilliantly layered, blending palace intrigue, clever strategy, and heartfelt emotion. And the acting—what a feast! Wu Jinyan delivers a captivating, sharp, and resilient heroine; Nie Yuan commands the screen with depth and charisma; and the second male lead, Xu Kai, brings warmth, charm, and subtle emotion that make his character impossible not to fall in love with.

The music deserves its own applause—especially “The Sound of Falling Snow”. Its haunting beauty stayed with me long after the episodes ended, and I found myself listening to it on loop, reliving the drama’s most touching moments.

Story of Yanxi Palace is a masterpiece that deepened my love for Chinese dramas forever.

The Drama That Started My Love for C-Dramas

I watched The Legend of Hao Lan a long time ago, but its beauty still lingers in my mind—so I finally wanted to write this review now.

The production is stunning, with breathtaking costumes and cinematography that bring ancient China vividly to life. The writing is equally impressive—woven with political intrigue, emotional depth, and unforgettable character arcs. And the acting? Simply phenomenal. Every actor delivers a performance that draws you deeply into their world.

My only lingering wish: that Haolan and Lü Buwei had a chance to end up together. This drama remains in my heart  —and it’s how I first fell in love with Chinese dramas.

A Timeless Masterpiece of Love, Chemistry, and Emotion

Love and Redemption is a flawless combination of breathtaking visuals, exceptional acting, and an unforgettable chemistry between the lead characters. From start to finish, the story is beautifully crafted, with each moment resonating deeply, leaving a lasting impact. The bond between the leads is unparalleled, their chemistry so genuine and powerful that it enhances every scene, making their love story feel truly timeless.

The emotional depth of the drama stays with you long after the final episode, making it impossible to forget. Additionally, the music is unforgettable, perfectly complementing the narrative and elevating the emotional weight of each scene. It’s a drama that lingers in your heart, a masterful blend of love, sacrifice, and the undeniable connection between two souls.

A Dull, Uninspired Drama with Weak Direction and a Generic Plot

Unfortunately, by episode 8, I found myself completely detached and unable to continue watching. The editing lacks flow, making scenes feel disjointed and abrupt. Transitions are jarring, with little sense of time or place, and characters often seem to "teleport" between locations. There’s minimal visual continuity. As is often the case with C-dramas, the dubbing is distracting and strips performances of emotional nuance. Despite the evident talent of both leads, their chemistry suffers under the weight of unnatural sound mixing and robotic line delivery—ex from the fourth prince, whose pauses and monotone dialogue make scenes feel stilted, as if he’s taking a break before every line.
Character development is minimal. The romance, if it ever begins, is rooted in toxic dynamics, based more on survival and circumstance than genuine emotional connection: "Since I haven’t succeeded in killing you (to sacrifice you for the greater good), you must be my true match.”
Let the characters’ actions show us who they are—don’t just tell us what they think.

The central conflict at the beginning—centered around a painting—lacks weight or intrigue. The plot is generic, moving without suspense or emotional depth. The music also feels recycled from other dramas, adding to the sense that the production is going through the motions rather than creating something fresh.

Sadly, it became just another forgettable entry in an oversaturated genre, and I’m choosing to drop it in favor of something more original, emotionally resonant, inspiring, and hopefully educational.

Cantonese Language, Cheap Hollywood Crap

Oh, what a joy to find a “Cantonese” movie at the local cinema! I expected the magic of the Chinese films I’ve loved before. Instead… wow. It was basically a western action movie with a Chinese face.
A group of people jumps into a time machine and what happens next? Guns, explosions, tech motorbikes, and a Hollywood soundtrack. The only real Chinese parts? The language, the faces, and a few costumes.
I left after 30 minutes, ticket in hand (premium seat, thanks), because the action and sci‑fi didn’t just fall flat, they completely missed the mark.
All I want now is a Chinese movie with robots, AI, and planet-ending disasters… then maybe the cinema will be worth it (irony). Until then, my trips to the movies? Extinct.

Too Many Twists, Not Enough Sense

The Wanted Detective starts off fast-paced, which initially made it a bit hard for me to follow — especially with the English translations. As the story progressed, it became increasingly messy and illogical. New clues and twists were thrown in rapidly, making it feel like someone was just adding layers for the sake of complexity rather than coherence. The result was a confusing and overly complicated plot that never quite found its footing.

For my taste, it was also a bit too violent and borderline horror in tone, which didn’t help my enjoyment.

That said, the actors are truly talented. Both leads, only 23 years old, have great potential. I had seen them previously in The Double and Love of the DivineTree, where I thought they shined. Unfortunately, in this drama, I felt their talent was wasted and maybe badly directed.

I couldn’t connect with either the female or male lead characters — they felt unlikable and underdeveloped. I would love to see the male lead in other fantasy or costume dramas, especially something with an "enemies to lovers" dynamic.

Production quality was decent, however, by episode 6, I found myself bored, frustrated, and completely disconnected from the plot, so I decided to drop it.

Light, Silly and Forgettable - Gao Wei Guang Deserves Better

A confident heroine and a sweet, silly romance, blending martial arts with lighthearted moments, make Love and Sword an easy, breezy watch for some viewers. However, for me, it felt far too light—offering little substance in its script and story, with mindless entertainment and cheap humor at its core. I greatly admire the male lead, Gao Wei Guang, whose acting here is a solid 10, but considering the rest of the cast’s performances, my overall acting score for the drama drops to a 6. I could only push through the first six episodes before stopping. The plot felt silly, characters lacked depth, and the tone came across more like unintentional satire than purposeful light drama. Gao Wei Guang is a seasoned, versatile actor, but this role felt too childish for his talent—a script not worthy of his abilities.

Awkward and Painfully Boring

After 6 episodes, I can confidently say this is one of the most boring dramas I’ve ever dropped. The plot is bizarre and nonsensical, with events crammed in without emotional buildup or proper character development. It feels more like a parody of xianxia than a serious drama. The dialogue is weak, the humor feels forced, and the pacing is erratic. The theme song sounds like a knock-off of the song Unsullied from the Ashes of Love.

Visually, it is overdone, with exaggerated colors that make everything look fake.

To make things worst, Bai Lu and Zeng Shunxi are completely miscast in these roles, and they have zero chemistry and completely mismatched vibes as a couple. A waste of great talent on a poorly written, emotionally hollow mess.

A Few Sensual Scenes and Nothing More: A Disconnected Drama in Search of a Story

Shallow and nonsensical, the story is full of plot holes and provides little background for the characters. It feels like a plot meant for a longer series that was cut short, leaving disconnected scenes that fail to form a cohesive narrative. While the female lead is lovely and the scenes are colourful, there is no substance, and the early episodes rely mostly on sensuality for entertainment. The first part of the drama centers on a full-moon ritual, tastefully filmed, not explicit or nude, but it often feels like that is all the drama has to offer; without these scenes, there is really nothing else to see. From episode 15 onward, the drama abandons its sensual allure for past conflicts that feel hollow, rushed, and embarrassing.

Disappointing and Dull

The story is riddled with massive plot holes, weak character development, and uninspired writing. I gave it a try, but dropped the drama after episode 3, that’s how quickly it lost me.

The FL and ML are both miscast in my opinion. Their performances feel stiff and disconnected. It’s hard to care about characters who feel so out of place in their own story.

The dialogue is dull, filled with forced lines and lifeless predictable conversations. There’s an overuse of inner monologues, which just drag the pacing down even more. Instead of adding depth, these internal thoughts come off as repetitive and unnecessary.

Nothing stands out visually either, the sets, costumes, and cinematography are all forgettable.

I really wanted to enjoy this drama, but after three episodes, it became clear that it just wasn’t worth continuing. If you're looking for a strong story, solid acting, or any kind of emotional engagement, this isn’t it. Legend of the Female General is a forgettable, frustrating watch.

Dropped at Episode 15

The lead actress’s performance was one of the biggest letdowns. Her portrayal felt flat and lacked the emotional range. The chemistry between the main leads was almost non-existent. It was hard to connect with either of them or care about their journey.

The writing didn’t help either. I found myself fast-forwarding through large sections just to get past the dull, meaningless conversations that added nothing to the plot. No matter how much I tried to push through, I couldn’t stay engaged. By episode 15, I finally gave up and dropped the drama.

From Hype to Snooze: A Political Thriller That Puts You to Sleep, Starring Cheng’s Boredom

I was really looking forward to The Vendetta of An. I thought, “Finally, the same director who gave us Love and Crown, and Journey of Legend, is back! (irony intended)
I’m usually not one to hold bias, but after this, I have serious doubts about the producer, and even Cheng Yi. Sorry, Cheng Yi, I genuinely loved your past performances!

The story is refreshingly unoriginal, offering nothing new or deep, the soundtrack is random noise sprinkled generously throughout, and the conversations are thrillingly shallow and boring; I spent most of the time yawning, so much so that staring at the sky would have been more engaging. A masterclass in how not to deliver a political thriller or a serious political power game.

And Cheng Yi… well, he’s consistent. He looks exactly the same as in all his other latest three dramas: same character, same eye expressions, same bored gaze from the corner of his eyes. I love Love and Redemption (my top fantasy drama) and even gave Mysterious Lotus Casebook a perfect 10, but watching him in his latest dramas feels painful. All the characters feel like they were cast from the same “sleepy” template.

Cheng Yi, supposedly a strategic mastermind, is perfectly cast… as a bored extra. I seriously doubt that even a different producer could make him convey any actual strategic sharpness or character depth for this type of role. I was expecting a tight, intense political thriller; instead, I got a melodramatic snooze fest. Bravo. Truly inspiring.
