Yes you are right, the main actors are quite low key and non-controversial. I think this one got its license too close to the CCP 100th anniversary so even if Tencent had been allowed to air it they would not have been able to promote it.

Yeah I think the KW scandal is a catalyst but its also 100th anniversary of the CCP. So even before that broke they were shutting down LGBT accounts on WeChat and generally cracking down on all kinds of stuff from alcohol to after school tuition and any activities they consider socially undesirable. It has been going on all year, the internet cos have so far lost over 1.2 trillion USD in market value. The reason not to get overly upset is this is very wide hitting, BL is NOT being specifically targeted in fact I think content by certain idol actors with overly aggressive fandoms are in a lot more danger...

That's a real shame about your shows. But it is too big an industry in China for the government to do that. This latest crackdown is most directed at making sure the production companies do proper due diligence on their actors ahead of time and stop promoting the idol culture. Which isn't the worst thing in the world bc the whole Kris Wu thing was such a badly kept secret its kind of shameful. Tencent is a very commercial company, they try to time their show launches for the most profit possible so if advertising budgets are down for example, they won't launch good content. In the case of Golden Hairpin of course it blew up in their face bc they got their license to air in April had they gone with it then they wouldn't have had to flush 300mm yuan down the toilet...

It is still possible if the edits are not extensive but I think less likely. If I were Tencent though I would push it out ASAP... this was big budget and who knows what kind of shit is gonna hit the fan... they best push it out as soon as they can and avoid another Golden Hairpin.

It wasn't just the bromances, many drama approvals in general got delayed but yeah I think in the current environment BL/bromance gets extra hard scrutiny. Tencent is also in a lot of trouble with regulators so I am sure their dramas going to get extra hard look.

According to Xingjie, Immortality has been recalled for more rounds of edits and reviews. Both IQ and Youku dramas have recently suffered similar fates due to new regulations around tightened scrutiny of actor behaviour, unhealthy fan club culture etc.
