No it is not a romcom - the comedic parts are actually quite good but the romances are dark. Its doing well with Chinese viewers - they are very critical but they also understand and appreciate the historical aspect a lot better.

I actually like it quite a bit. I mean I don't rate it highly bc of all the lousy writing but if you are a history buff, the important bits are actually quite well done. Like they took tons of literary license with the facts but the meaning and the essence of the characters are well captured. And the acting is phenomenal across all the characters. No mis matched childish voices either.

Oh the romances are just simply dreadful and it overflows with male characters that are misogynists and stalkers. But I really like the story of Tang Taizong's succession mess and that part of the story is actually what the show is about and it is a rather sympathetic portrayal of this rather sad crown prince. So its not actually that bad depending on what you are watching for.

It was actually far more complex than that. He also feared his son would overthrow him and the CP cried a lot but he also used his power/uncle's support against his father when it suited his purpose. But its terribly depressing I am not recommending it.
