The ending really sucked and was not in character. But its literally only the last 5-10 minutes. I enjoyed all the rest and it is still one of my top 3 dramas ever. Had the ending been less bad it would be my favorite.
Heh ignore me - just venting a bit - until now, Dong ‘er was the only non annoying woman in the whole show! I hope our boys get over their lovers spat soon cause high pitched female voices just kill me.
Finished the series and can't get over how handsome the ML is! HahaAnyway, 1st series of the leads for me and…
Although I like the FL I think the face swap was a mistake. The first girl was much more beautiful, tragic and engaging. She also had the best scene in the entire drama (the opening dance). And I think she would have made a better looking couple with the ML. This actress just looks pudgy and like a real peasent girl not a princess. Major mis-casting. Don't get me wrong, she is funny and likable in her own way I would have been fine with her if she was the princess from the start. They should have just never put her up for comparison with a much more lovely girl. It like they let me have a Bugatti for a day and then told me to make do with a Porsche afterwards.

Yes that was a sad scene, you can certainly interpret it as he couldn't bear to part or was tempted to change his mind - I don't think it was an easy of lightly made decision for him. But I think both CFT and his wife were under no illusion that he would ultimately go with them. The ending is clever and leaves the Disney princess ending as a possibility but I just feel the Chinese opera ending is more fitting. The final clue is the ending paragraph. Had they gone off together it would have surely said CFT and SXR were disseminating anti-Japanese propaganda together and potentially added that they were documenting SXR's operas on film. It is notable that it only mentions CFT.
Ah this was such a good drama I’m sad I finished it so soooooon. Also kinda confused by the ending, does Shang…
The ending was so sad but for me it was unambigous that SXR didn't go with CFT. He already made his decision when CFT went to see him at the theater so that was their farewell. Actually SXR made that decision some time back and that was the meaning of the last opera and the private performance where she says farewell to the General. The ending scene was just what played out in CFT/both their imagination. It is sad but true to SXR character.
He isn't really a main character, he just takes up space in the beginning and then appears again a bit closer…
Well I definitely don't consider him one of the leads but he is a main character. As for where he gets his powers from that would be.a pretty major spoiler - you should see for yourself close to the end.
