There are a few more dramas that focus on different characters or parts of the story. Zhao Ge is supposed to be coming this year and it focuses much more on Ji Fa's story.
I have to say what Hongxuan's wife did in 22 was so completely and utterly bird brained I am super irritated and disgusted. This incompetent feather head that I kind of liked so far went and did the typical I can't fight and I am pretty much helpless but I am gonna wade into a dangerous situation to go try to rescue my man thing. I really hope this is not a precursor to the story writing taking a wrong turn from here on out...
The author was very angry at the actor for portraying the emperor so sympathetically but I thought that was one of the brilliant aspects of the show - you start out sympathetic to the crown prince and angry at the emperor. As time goes by you realize some of his father's criticisms of him are spot on. He is all heart but no brain and ultimately does not have the stomach to do what must be done and hence is not fit to inherit the throne. If you watched Rise of the Phoenixes it is a similar power struggle backstory but the prince is completely different - strong and ruthless enough to do what it takes to win and rule.
In the book actually he never meets Wenxi and even until the end only knew her as Gu Abao, a very suspicious palace maid. The more romantic changes to the backstory only made the CP look worse later on.
The after credits are just clips from the last arc (12 episodes) that didn't air. We already see the Gus made a lot of sacrifices to keep the CP in power. When Gu Xilin abandoned his post and came to the city without orders after the concubine was made empress, he could have been executed for revolting just to save CP who was close to being deposed. He also came to beg CP to seize power but was rebuffed and instead was asked to go back and defend the border. Gu Fengan probably already partly blamed CP for his father's death but carried on his father's wishes to support CP. In the final arc he tried to force CP to revolt but of course CP declined again. Their relationship suffered as a result of CP letting down his family time and again. The book was a tragedy - pretty much everyone dies although the director said he changed the ending to make it "more acceptable to viewers." It is a story about a tragic and weak prince who tries to do the right thing but by not choosing sides, ultimately betrays everyone.
