They cut too many episodes at the cost of plot tightness and too many interesting character back stories.
The NIF2 novel was written initially as a script and was subsequently re-edited and published as a book. I believe GJM meant to turn the My Journey to You script into a novel but so far it hasn't happened.

He's quite an interesting character for sure but they didn't have time to flesh him out properly. A triple agent no less. But even though he is dangerously disingenuous and charming, he is not the level of Wang Pu in terms of pure smarts. Wang Pu would know that trying to have a hold over Huai'an by holding Shen Xiaoqing hostage wouldn't work. She is no Gu Yu - she is simply not important enough for him to save at the cost of their mission.

No GuYu’s army is a family army they will not fight either if both emperors are dead. He meant to disband anyway and was ready to surrender his command. He wouldn’t risk his men alongside Huben/YFS if there is no emperor he supports left to fight for. It is also not clear all 4 military commanders will stand with Huben without an emperor to fight for. If the emperors fall some or all of them could decide just to return to their own fiefs and be small kings over them rather than fight against Tiemo. That would be a bloody battle with high casualties.

Yeah that part is the one I find most difficult to suspend disbelief on. But maybe we get better color later about how he was able to sneak out or if he has a doppleganger.🙄👻

That’s a good point about Gu Yu but having the monarch still trumps everything. Without a king there is no throne to fight for. Which is why at the moment Wuyang army and the 4 military commanders won’t move. Uncle Long could have let Wuyang die, no one would have been the wiser. The key to this plot always was that whoever has the emperor has the ultimate upper hand. That’s why Huai’an seized Wenjing first - he is the true king and the one that matters most. Wuyang is only needed if Wenjing falls and to mobilize his army just as Gu Yu is needed to mobilize Baiwenhu. This plot arc is good at a superficial level and in terms of dramatic tension and twists but once you look at it closely there are holes. It’s fine I can go along with it but I won’t say it’s a tight plot arc.

Yes that is the current state of play. I am specifically referring to the time when Huai'an stashed them both at Cangshuichuan in the care of Uncle Hong while he hung out in Chang'an. That was the optimal moment to seize both monarchs. At that point it would have been game over.
I don't think the Tiemo king was ever fully imprisoned by YFS. YFS sent his men to ask him not to escape and tip the scale in the power struggle many times. He just stayed there bc it suited his purpose while the Chang'an was embroiled in power struggle. In any case, the envoy is also a Tiemo prince so there are plenty of heirs. That's why the imprisoning the king (for 15 years no less) logic doesn't make that much sense to me.
Wenjing was the crown prince and should therefore be the legitimate emperor. But he was under YFS's thumb bc he was too young when their father died. Like most princes when their brothers ascend the throne Wuyang who is a formidable general was sent to his fief with his Wuyang army and should be the most powerful fief lord. He usurped the throne when it was clear his brother was just a puppet under YFS. But many scenes showed he was not really after the throne. So I think he usurped the throne simply to free his brother from YFS's control. He will probably give it back to him now that he is showing himself to be worthy.

Huai'an already spoiled this in his letter when he said YZ was too emotional. I knew he was going to get himself stabbed a few times. But as we have noticed, no one dies from stabbing in this drama.... 🤡 unless they take off their head as well. In that case, they are dead dead.😅
