I cover the Chinese media sector for a living and have many friends who work on the production side in senior roles. I can assure you there is no such rule as you have described. Honestly all the online rumors of what does and does not pass censorship needs to be taken with a huge grain of salt. The rules themselves are not that detailed and what can pass is far broader than you think, often depending on the review team and how well the production communicates with them from the get go. It is true that evil characters should not be glorified but that is far from the case here so I just roll my eyes at all this nonsense about Huai'an is too evil to live or whatever.
Further, I never said the ML can go on to be happy but both his father and his sister wants him to go on living. And that very simplistically is what c-netizens call a HE. I just don't share your opinion that just because he experienced great tragedy he is better off dead. Living is hard, dying is easy. And unlike MCS or LLH, he is not terminally ill. So the odds that he survives are high IMO.

It was an odd comment bc it was made to make sure the audience got it that they are vicious. I personally think Wang Jinsong is a bit miscast in villain roles - there is just something naturally benign about his expression or his face. He doesn’t come across as vicious.

I am fine with Uncle Hong saving his disciples bc that would make sense but maybe he can do it without betraying the Tiemo king. In any case it would be equally bad to make the characters do out of character things for the sake of being unpredictable - Huai’an not taking steps to better protect Baiwan is a case in point.
