Where was the love exactly? I watch this drama for romance and love as promised. I'm even okay with a tragic separation…
I felt the same way you did. Sometimes I saw Deok Im as selfish. First she kept choosing her friends and so-called-freedom over his love and a family with him. Then when she accepted to be his concubine, she was pessimistic. She chose to never show her true feelings, to never give in to her feelings, and never let herself fully love him. She chose to look at the dark side, when life is not black and white. She didn't trust his love for her.
Also part of it is the production's fault. The episodes were too little and they skipped all the years they lived as a family, and jumped to the sad part; the consecutive deaths.
At the end I thought: this wasn't a romance drama, this was a drama showing us the negative feelings of court ladies in the past, in particular one bold court lady.
One thing that cooled my anger a teeny bit was something that I realized. At the end, Deok Im and her friends promised to meet at a bookstore after death, but she actually waited for him at their place instead. And maybe that's why she wanted to see her friends one last time before she died instead of him. Because that angered me too. In a scene when Yi San is old, he was angered when he heard from her friend (the new the Head Court Lady) that they're gonna meet in the afterlife. In that scene where he asks for Deok Im's belongings. But the drama is so good and I still love it, though it hurts. And there were so many parts where they showed how she expresses her love by being loyal and protecting him but never saying what he wants.
edit: She might have given him that yellow pouch and expressed her love if he came straight to her when he heard of her pregnancy. Lol. I'm trying to share some of the blame here to make myself feel better.
It's been 48 very, very empty hours since finishing Red Sleeve. Now I've been filling it with Our Beloved Summer…
Lol! It's been 5 days for me and I am still feeling empty. I tried watching Our beloved summer too, but I fell asleep thinking of Red Sleeve every time and didn't watch any. (although I loved ep1 from OBS which I watched a long time ago) I liked the blue robes best too
OMG I just realized this! In the afterlife or whatever, she didn't just go to the place her friends promised to meet (a bookshop I think), but she waited for him at their annex. This is so sad and nice at the same time 😭😭😭
Hi! I feel happy when I see someone liking Sageuks. I wanna recommend 2 dramas I loved that I didn't see on your list :) :) No pressure :) The King's Daughter, Soo Baek Hyun Horse Doctor
Exactly! I was disappointed with FL's character. I understood her and yet I didn't. I thought she would drop her…
Thank you for cooling some of my anger. I do feel for her, but she lived pessimistically. There are thing we gain and things we lose in life, why didn't she choose to see the bright side? She loved him, why didn't she accept that?
I’m just so glad that this drama existed to bring back the old sageuk glory days. Imagine 2021, some sageuks…
Me too. I enjoy lengthy and older sageuks a whole lot more than newer ones. The ones that tell the story of real people, feel deep, immersive, and GREAT. Most of those short new historical dramas were disappointing; they felt superficial, and had no depth. They can't compare. But this one managed to do it really well. And MBC is the best at Historical dramas
