funny its the reverse for me. I never really a fan of ZJY. I absolutely love SWL and will watch whatever he's in just to look at that gorgeous face. But in this drama, ZJY acting is the highlight! all the micro expression, the subtle interaction, its like reading a novel, not watching a drama. She's so good at acting.
When I started watching cdrama, I too, shared the same view as you. I'm Asian, but growing up, western culture influenced my view of romance. So, I feel very conflicted watching romance cdrama especially the historical ones. As I watch more, I come to realization that love in cdrama is often portrayed as devotion rather than romance. While in western culture, partners are expected to be equals and emotionally transparent, in cdrama, endurance, patience, and silent understanding are more culturally accepted.
