I just started and couldn't understand the situation well in the drama. I've hard time recognising names so I'm…
Yeah historical dramas can be confusing sometimes with all the characters and plot, especially the very political ones. I recently found this blog which does amazing recaps.
love that their performances really makes people change their initial impressions/reservations.
LOL I've been away binging You Are My Glory and it looks like this chat thread has taken a life of its own. I miss this series already and want to re-watch it so badly but I don't want to conflict the shipping cause I'm in love with Yang Yang at the moment. I'll come back when YAMG finishes... T–T
I finished watching a whole TV show, movie and even completed the drama Falling Into Your Smile just yesterday.…
Hahahaha what a mood, but then again I'm no better cause I just binged all of Falling Into Your Smile in one day and now I'm binging this... Xu Kai is just too addictive!
Yeah I agree with WK1, this is kind of semi-Wuxia cause it focuses more on politics and wars rather than martial…
Thank :) Technically English is not my first language so I never really feel the need to actually define the sub genres in English. Plus, I grew up watching Chinese historical dramas so it feels natural just to pick up any that I find interesting regardless of what trope it belongs to.
It's been a while since i watched wuxia. Is this a good one? Please recommend any good wuxia from 2020-2021
Yeah I agree with WK1, this is kind of semi-Wuxia cause it focuses more on politics and wars rather than martial arts. The tropes for Chinese "historical" dramas can sometimes be a bit confusing, I still don't really quite get it either.
Wuxia is historical but focuses more on martial arts, the martial world and the values of being a martial hero like chivalry and courage. The Untamed and Word of Honor are great Wuxia dramas with amazing bromance. Although The Untamed is tagged as Xinxia, it's more of a Wuxia for me.
Xinxia is like Wuxia except there are immortals and it's more fantasy-like. This would be Eternal Love or Ashes of Love.
So it kind of goes like this: Historical > Wuxia > Xinxia. Wuxia generally has a darker colour schemes, whereas Xinxia is brighter and more colourful. Normal historical dramas are more realistic. By the end of the day, regardless of the tropes, it all boils down to having a good plot, nice character development and beautiful costumes for me cause that what draws me to historical dramas in the first place.
I had reservation about Dilraba and Leo at first cause they didn't really fit the image I had of them from the manhua but I couldn't be more wrong! I just picked this up again recently and everything just fits together so beautifully. I absolutely love the plot, the actors, the soundtracks and the costumes. There's nothing like a good historical drama to cure binging block...
Go Ahead and One Spring Night are so heartwarming. I've started to really appreciate slice-of-life ever since quarantine. Hospital Playlist, When the Weather is Fine and The Best of You in My Mine are also my go-to for some quality healing and feel good time :)
Really? That sounds promising. Tbh I was stunned by Crystal's acting in Love and Redemption and the trailer for Snow Tower looks really good as well. It looks like I need to up my historical Cdramas game a bit. I was binging really hard last year so I'm a bit burned out now...
I really like oh my emperor cause of XNINE and R1SE :)
Definitely in my top 10 Cdramas to watch! I originally added it cause I love Xiao Zhan's soundtrack... call me a fangirl. I've been busy catching up with XZ's new dramas and just busy in general but I'll get to OME eventually :)
Your review encouraged me to watch it. What a great drama. I loved every bit of it. Thanks.
Awwww thanks, I'm glad you find it's to your liking. Tbh I was worried that people might not like how slow-paced this drama is since I wrote this review when it was still airing and there was a lot of, rather undeserving, negative comments. But I love that many have decided to give this show the patience and love that it deserves :)
Great article, very easy to read and really hits home! I agree, the chemistry in this dramas is simply amazing.
While The Untamed might be more on the heavy side and more complicated in its timeline, Word of Honor is a bit more playful... (cough) flirty (cough) and more straightforward, which I'm not complaining. I think anyone who loves The Untamed would definitely enjoy Word of Honor, and vice versa, given they're both great Wuxia dramas aside from the prominent bromance tthat is.
Also, Cheng Ling got to be one of the best supporting characters. It's always fun and heart-warming when he's with Zi Shu and Ke Xing.
If you have watched the anime or read the novel. You have to be very open-minded. Anime and series really can't…
Totally agree here! I think people are forgetting the fact that this is a relatively small-budgeted drama, well for a historical drama that is. The real hidden gem here lies in the amazing script (written by Wang Juan from Joy of Life), which really fleshes out the charming and unique personalities of the characters rather than only focuses on the fantasy part, and the perfect chemistry of the cast whether it's the main / side couples or the 7 Shrek students and their teachers.
Despite the small-scale production, this has turned out to be a really enjoyable and meaningful show. Perhaps the settings / props and CGI would get better with season 2 since the huge success of the first season would definitely attract much bigger investment. The only anguish I feel after finishing this drama is the fact that I still have to wait at least 1.5 - 2 years for the sequel (ㄒoㄒ).
What I've seen from his character Qi Heng so far makes me wholeheartedly agree with you though I also have to…
I love ZYL's portrayal of Wu Xie! I normally steer clear of exploration / treasure hunt kind of dramas but Reunion: The Sound of the Providence was too good to pass by. I think his version is a lot most mature and adept out of all in the Lost Tomb series.
Kkondae Intern totally deserves the recognition! It was such a hilarious and moving show. Also love the Find Me in Your Memory couple which has amazing chemistry despite the large age gap...

I'm ok with this drama cause I've read the manhua but it's literally a guessing game when I was binging The Imperial Coroner hahahaha...
