The mother character is just a who....e. She's a bit.......h who takes it out on her daughter for her own mistakes.…
Good then the story is doing its job. Please don't judge the mother by what you see. In the end, you will see why she does everything that she does. Is she a perfect mother, no, but are there reasons for her actions, yes. If you want to see the mother as a" hands off" mother, watch her in Hidden Love with Zhao Lu Si. I love the contrast and wonder if the producers of Hidden Love did it on purpose.

no romance? happy end?
I have only watched 15 episodes and there is not much romance going on yet. Don't know about the happy ending (the main character is very ill). Just finished watching it. No happy ending and not much romance.

Title Nirvana in Fire Spoiler
Dear MDL netizens, I have a question for you, if you may: I did watch MLC, Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty, Ancient…
This is definitely a political show. It is not a crime show in the sense of what you are referring to. The main focus is about three princes fighting over the crown prince position and a guy who advises them all in order to get revenge for the injustice done to his family. If you want a show that has multiple crimes try Miss Truth.

Wow, did you and I watch the same drama? When does the FL ever make the ML jealous? When does the FL ever want…
Thank you, I now understand what you mean. However, I do have to argue that all Asian dramas have, by your definition, a love triangle, square, or harem. It is what drives the plot forward and creates the drama. The only dramas that I have seen that have true love triangles are The Imperial Doctress and Jewel in the Crown.

Thank you for debating with me. I hope you enjoy the rest of Love Like a Galaxy. It really is a masterpiece in how it is filmed, written, and acted.

Are you saying males can't enjoy this show? Therefore, I must be a girl. There are more things in this show that would lean towards a male liking it more than a female. The whole series is about politics and the superiority of men and the control they had/have over women's and lower status men's lives. The fight scenes are very realistic. The series is challenging all of these ideas. The fact that you are angry or have to ask whether commenters are male or female means the story is doing its job. Thank you for proving my point.

Deepakk, this show is made for all audiences. In fact, I think this show was made mostly for a male audience, even though the main character is female. The producers wanted to address numerous issues about love, discipline, power, and autonomy of both men and women. Also, you are right, it would not be the same story if the main character, SS, had been a boy. The closest you come to the male foil for SS is LY. His family had been abused by the first family since his father died.

What is the difference between a harem and a triangle then? I am confused. Based on your argument every Asian drama would be considered a harem with love triangles. I can not think of one Asian drama that only has one love interest (each other). There is always one or two other people interested in the male and female leads. Also, there is no tag line on MDL that says this is a reverse harem show. I am just trying to understand your logic and definitions because it doesn't seem like there is a difference.

Title Hidden Love Spoiler
I have read the novel and there was no indication that the ML was flirting with FL while she was still in middle…
I understand what you are saying, and it is funny how people respond to young people liking someone. If the setting had been a costume drama, people would have spurred the couple on as the characters are about the same age. In fact, in Love Like a Galaxy she plays a 15-year-old girl and the love interest is 21. Yet people do not feel this as wrong. It is only now that we have created the idea of childhood that a 19-year-old liking a 14-year-old is wrong. We have decided he is either a pervert or can only like her as a brother in order for this to be okay. We cannot see other possibilities.

If you dislike complicated love plots don't watch this drama. This is not your normal drama. The female lead becomes…
You're right he meets her fully at the lantern festival. However, he is only curious about her. That is what I love about this drama. They are challenging the notion of love at first sight. Does he really love her? What kind of love is it? As the story progresses you realize that he does not really love her in the same way that he wants her to love him. Does he like her, yes! Does he love her, no! The writers have taken all the tropes of the genre and challenged them, yet have kept them for the audience. I think of the concept presented in Romeo and Juliet. Do they really love each other? Does dying for each other mean you love them? What is love? How do you define it? Love is a very abstract term and defined by the individual.

The audience has been trained that when the couple twirl or the boy saves the girl that they have automatically fallen in love. SS does not love him at first sight. LBY likes her at first, but does he really love her at first sight? Happy watching. There is more to this story than what you first see.

Title The King's Affection Spoiler
I am sure that she took the pill that Jung Ji Woon made for her that helped to calm her when she was nervous.…
It is hard to say when they get together as they meet as children. He goes away for 10 years and she becomes the crown prince all in the first two episodes. No annoying love triangles. Very happy ending! They break up twice for different reasons and get back together. This is a very good drama. Happy watching.

Well, I am glad you are liking the show despite all that. I do understand the tropes (reverse harem and triangles). All are represented in this show. This is where we disagree. They are taking those tropes and challenging them. My question to you is this. Based on your definition does the emperor have a harem?

I’m on Ep 6, and I think it’s getting better since they have already introduced FL’s personality and her…
If you dislike complicated love plots don't watch this drama. This is not your normal drama. The female lead becomes engaged to two of the men in her life (not at the same time of course). However, there is one other one who likes her. She does not actively pursue any of them. They chase her. There are many girls who would love to have ML Yuchang is just one of them. The others you have to wait until season 2. She likes the male lead in the first season and considers him a friend, and I disagree with those who say he fell in love at first sight. He was simply curious about her from the start. He does not really become interested in her until the lantern festival. For me, they don't fall in real love until season 2. Yes, there is a breakup in season 2, but there are several reasons for it. They will get back together in episode 55 after the breakup. The ending is beautiful. Happy watching.

I just started rewatching too!!! I think her mother's depiction is realistic. She came back and realized that…
I worked in the garden when I was young. I had responsibilities as a child. I did dishes If I did something wrong that could have harmed someone else (despite the circumstances), I would have been beat like NaioNaio. I think the message here is discipline is love. Did mom hug and kiss NaioNaio, no, but did NaioNaio ever hug and kiss her mother? No. However, as time goes on you see how very much alike they are. Is she a perfect mother, no, but you know that she loves NaioNaio very much. I also never see mom hug and kiss YY.

As for the mother treating her differently than Yang Yang. Yes, mom needed to. She needed to protect Yang Yang who grew up under the girls need to be gentle, sweet, compliant, and do whatever we tell them, belief. Mom knows that Yang Yang will never go far away and will stay home and run the household. NaioNaio, on the other hand, wants to leave the nest and get out of the home. Where she will end up, who knows. That's why mom needed to discipline her differently and treats her differently. As for the lantern festival scenes, NN is not interested in girlish things (hairpins). She is more interested in woodworking. That's why mom took Yang Yang and left NN to dad. Also, YY's dad and mom had just taken off.

I do understand what kalarro is saying. What I am arguing is that if he wants one love interest and no other love interests as he puts it, then, this drama is not for him. He does not have to bash something just because he wants something else. I have watched plenty of dramas that I stopped after several episodes, but did not bash them in the comments because of it. Other people have enjoyed them, so let them.

I do understand what you are saying and I have read every single one of comments. What I am arguing is that if you want one love interest and no love "triangles" as you put it. Then, this drama is not for you. You say the writers wanted to give the female lead a harem. That is not true. A harem is a man or woman who actively pursues multiple partners at the same time. NaioNaio never does this. A love triangle means one man or woman who loves multiple people and must decide which one they want. Again, NaioNaio never has this. She never loves Ling Bu Yi and Luo Yao at the same time. She even comments on this when the marriage proposal from Ling Bu Yi happens.

I just started rewatching too!!! I think her mother's depiction is realistic. She came back and realized that…
Actually mom at the beginning of the quarrel does a wonderful job of being fair. She allows NaioNaio to discipline her own maid and question Yang Yang's maid. She goes overboard when she calls a halt to the punishing of Yang Yang's maids. This makes NaioNaio mad and then gives her mother the equity speech. The next scene is of the 3rd aunt and the mom talking about punishing the maids. Notice you never see them again, just the maid who stood up for NaioNaio's maid. The following scenes are all about the difference between equality and equity. They are not the same.
On the outside it appears that the mom favors Yang Yang, but in reality she knows that Yang Yang is the one who needs to be protected. NaioNaio can defend herself and is much like her. The final paddling is NaioNaio realizing and learning she must accept responsibility for her actions. She is now ready to go out into the world.

Thanks, you have just proved my point! You're mad because the girl isn't following the rules of love according to the tropes. Yuan and Ling Bu Yi force NaioNaio to love them or believe that she should love them just because she caught Yuan's embroidery ball and Ling Bu Yi risked his life to save her twice. What does catching an embroidery ball have to do with love? Ling Bu Yi is a general in the army isn't his job to protect the common people? The only male who never forces her to love him or expects her to love him is Luo Yao. That's why his character is so important to the story. It is why he is there. You can't take him out.

Tejas, actually it's those tropes that the story is challenging. Do people fall in love at first sight or can love come slowly? Is the female lead obligated to love the male lead just because he saved her twice? Isn't it his job to protect the common people as a general of the army? Does she have to marry Yuan because she caught his embroidery ball? This female character is challenging these tropes. The only character who did not ask anything of her or force her to love him was Yao. She did that on her own. It's what I love about this drama and makes it unique. There are no unneeded scenes or characters in this drama. I can't say the same for the second season however.

Wow, did you and I watch the same drama? When does the FL ever make the ML jealous? When does the FL ever want…
That's okay. I dropped it at the beginning as well because I couldn't get past the grandmother. However, after watching so many other disappointing dramas, I came back to this one. Once I watched the whole thing, I realized why all the build up. The second season mirrors the first, but at the palace level. It really is one of the best dramas out there as far as storytelling and the message it is trying to convey. Zhao Lu Si always plays a character who goes against the societal beliefs of the time. This character does this and more.
