An autopsy of a relationship on its last legs. Good storyline & great acting from the FL. I'm glad this ended…
For the first time in a long time I came across a legimitate justification for a grovelling ML. Usually you have a lot of dramas & movies where the ML grovel for no reason, only to stroke the collective egos of a female viewing audience. Here, this guy was complete trash & I'm glad he realized what had when it was too late. That grovelling scene at the end ... chef's kiss.
He really didn't deserve a good woman like Rome. And I'm glad that Rome herself also realized that she deserved better. It was obvious that she still loved him, it was hard for her to walk away from the relationship, but it was absolutely the right thing to do. This is a guy who had already cheated on her once before. She forgave him & here he is again doing the same thing. He wasn't going to change. Once a cheater, always a cheater. He didn't even respect her enough to not fuck someone that they both knew, as was their agreement for the open relationship.
He didn't care. He didn't agonize over her being with other men; he didn't care about her misgivings regarding the arrangement. He didn't care at all, not until he realized that no woman would ever love his scrawny, loser ass better than Rome did. The only reason he wanted Rome back was entirely for his own selfish benefit. Not because he cared how much the situation affected her or because he felt guilty about lying to her (about sleeping with someone they know) & suggesting the whole sordid affair in the first place.
Nah, brah. He had to go. Now he can go fuck however many bitches he wants. And Rome, once she gets over him, can go be with that Chad curator guy. Didn't Ethan manipulate her into the open relationship by telling her exactly that? Maybe we should end this, you can go find someone better than me, who will love you & take care of you & make you happy ... well, she did, motherfucker! How about that?
An autopsy of a relationship on its last legs. Good storyline & great acting from the FL. I'm glad this ended the right way. It couldn't & shouldn't have gone any other way. 7/10
Honestly, I don't get the hype about this drama. I felt the exact same way as you! I found the FL insufferable…
I watched 12 eps in full & skipped thru another 5. She didn't get any better for me (in fact the more I watched the more I disliked her), so I dropped it after that. But it seemed like you've already completed the drama so I'm not sure why you asked if you should drop it or not?
It's because it has open sex scenes in it. No leaving anything to imagination in this one & most MDL users just…
Do you think you just dropped out of the sky and into existence? No, your parents had sex, that's how you got here. Hopefully they had a nice romance whilst doing so too.
Look, I can totally appreciate that cultural differences may result in some people prefering not to see nudity & sex on screen. Fine. Then don't watch it. Don't watch something you know you're going to dislike and then rate it badly because it has that thing in it that you don't like.. THAT is what's "unsophisticated", not to mention STUPID.
Do your research before watching. If there's nudity & sexual content, it's usually tagged on the drama or mentioned in the comments section. You have no excuse for not finding out beforehand whether a drama contains things you don't like.
Demanding that every drama be made in such a way to suit your sensibilities is pure arrogance. What are you, ruler of the dramaverse? There are those cases where sex & nudity adds an artistic flair to the content or used as a device to develop the character etc. SOMEBODY is one of the few dramas in which I did not perceive the sexual content as gratituous. There are also those of us who appreciate a realistic portrayal of intimacy & sex, rather than cringey, fake kissing & what not.
There are lots of themes & actions I don't like to watch ... gay sex for example. But I don't watch BL dramas & give them poor ratings for having gay sex. I just don't watch them. You get it? Because it's dumb & moronic & very childish to do stuff like that.
This, and other complaints about this drama being "sexist" & "misogynistic", seems like an odd response. Men &…
Do you even know the meaning of the word "misogyny"? Clearly not. And here you seem to think you're so smart spouting nonsense about "internalized misogyny" & "patriarchy". You are incapable & inadequate, to have any sort of academic or intellectual discourse on any of these concepts. You're not on my level; you can't debate me. Esp when you resort to blatantly lying to prove a point.
Not ONE of you who have responded to me have made any effort to provide a counter argument to my arguments. Your triggered knee jerk reaction is to sling around words & concepts you obviously don't even understand & name call. THAT is your collective modus operandi. Pathetic.
This, and other complaints about this drama being "sexist" & "misogynistic", seems like an odd response. Men &…
Please direct the reading audience to all the dramas under which I am allegedly "ranting and complaining under dramas that have female leads who likes other men besides the male lead, how the abusive male lead is so misunderstood, how woman are always wrong and delusional yada yada."
Show us the evidence. Or should we just take your word for it?
Moreover, if I've ever said anything bad about the character of a female, whether real or imagined, I can provide an equal amount of instances where I have praised female characters. So yeah, keep going with the baseless adhominen attacks. You're collectively triggered by my comments because your egos are so fragile & your insecurities so deep that every criticism toward a woman is "misogyny". All you who have commented on this discussion post attacking me, are an absolute embarassment to female intellect.
And btw, you're a desperate, full of crap liar. If you have been on here 4 years there is NO way you could have interacted with me in that time because the last time I was active on MDL, outside of occasionally updating my list, was *prior* to COVID, which started in 2020. I started again to comment & interact with other users on drama pages only in June of this year (2024) when I joined a few challenges. So nice try, you lying scumbag.
This, and other complaints about this drama being "sexist" & "misogynistic", seems like an odd response. Men &…
LOL, if this is your idea of a "scientific fact", then no wonder you ran away like a little coward from the discussion. Your standard of evidence is quite low. Instead of using big words you don't know the meaning of, why don't you debate me? You were on a roll, what happened? Can't take the heat? Or is it because you *can't* debate me? You probably don't have the mental, emotional or intellectual bandwidth (not that I'm so much more intellectually superior, but you make this so easy that even a simpleton could probably annihilate your arguments). You certainly have no original thought, just regurgitated nonsense you heard from other sheeple like you. If women with mindsets like yours are the "standard" to live up to, then I'd rather be a "misogynist" because I find women like you insufferable & embarassing. I would never want to be anything like you.
A moving, pulchritudinous tale of love in the midst of unspeakable adversity. So poignant, so healing, so sweet.…
I just have to comment on Asa & Hanjiro's lovemaking scene ...
Honestly, I bawled my eyes out when they made love for the first time. Their coming together was a healing journey for a young woman who had never experienced love & care from another, least of all, a man. And the way Hanjiro was so gentle, reverent & loving to her ... so touching & beautiful. How could I not cry?
You could see that THIS was Asa's first time, not just to make love, but to have sex. The first time she herself chose to have sex, with someone of her choice & not some brute she had to service out of necessity.
Her work as a courtesan was never her choice. It was a choice that was thrust upon her due to the tragic circumstances of her birth. Her only way to survive in a time when women had no presence in society except in the home. But when you have no home what do you do? How do you subsist? The brothel or the grave were the only 2 choices.
I loved that she experienced that happiness with someone she chose & loved and who chose and loved her. If only for that fleeting moment. It was truly the first time someone cared about her pleasure & happiness.
This is by far one of the best films I've seen where the sexual content is so well used to enhance the plot & demonstrate the characters' emotions & development. Not just to sexualize the actors.

Tragically, the leads do not end up together in this life. But the suggestion is that they meet again in the next. Heartrending, but beautiful. Inspite of this, it's worth the watch, I promise.
A moving, pulchritudinous tale of love in the midst of unspeakable adversity. So poignant, so healing, so sweet. The two leads portrayed their characters beautifully. Both were touchingly sympathetic & likeable in spite of the circumstances which brought them together. By far, Japan makes the best love stories. If only they weren't so darn pessimistic about everything. Anyway, this is a must watch for romance lovers. I can see myself rewatching this at some point even though I almost never rewatch anything. The love scenes here were so profound & meaningful (see further commentary regarding this below ... and for those who are offended by nudity, please don't watch & unfairly downgrade the movie for this reason alone. Don't be a moron). To know the ending, see spoiler below. 8.5/10
Filipino films (that I've seen) aren't the best written or the best acted, but they're watchable as heck. They pull you in and provide you with a couple hours of escapist fun. That's a value onto itself. This movie, in particular, was kind of a convoluted mess, but I couldn't look away. It kept me awake & entertained. Cheating is not my favourite theme & I normally avoid dramas & movies about cheating. On occasion I'll give a cheating drama/movie a chance if I get the impression that it is handled sensibly. I actually didn't realize this movie was about cheating per se; watching the trailer I thought the movie would go in a different direction ... but it was indeed about cheating in all its forms. I didn't quite like the way it was handled. Both parties cheated, but I felt one party in particular got off too easy for their indiscretion. Cheating is a massive breach of trust & I can't imagine it's so easy to rebuild that trust once it's broken. I expected to see more struggle & work being done to repair that trust, but it was just glossed over as though forgiveness was a foregone conclusion. The Philippines being a stauchly catholic country, marriage is serious business, as it should be. So I understand the cultural context that cheating in & of itself isn't grounds for divorce. I just felt like something important was missing. The movie did try to acknowledge the seriousness of cheating, but not substantially. That said, this lack of substance didn't take away from my ability to fully immerse in the narrative so I guess in the end ... it doesn't matter? Not quite sure ... 6.5/10
Bleak, melancholic, but heartwarming & full of charm, which is Koreeda's hallmark. Not a masterpiece, however, as is his usual style, Koreeda tells human stories with a lot of humanity. Every Koreeda movie is worth watching for that reason alone. 7.5/10
Kinda like the Filippino version of Ghost (1990), starring Patrick Swayze & Demi Moore. This film wasn't quite able to capture the substance of the themes it explored, though. It was more a showcase of beautiful people getting all hot & bothered on screen, but still watchable. After watching any number of sterile K-drama where the "romance" is never really present & the leads never kiss like real people do, I ain't complaining. LOL The main actors aren't about to get any Oscars any time soon, but they weren't all that bad either. They did ok; I was able to watch them without cringing. The storyline of dealing with love & lost was great, I loved it; but the production value wasn't the best. Like most Filippino films I've seen, the cinematography was basic. It lacked atmosphere & mood which could have really enhanced the storyline. The supporting cast was bad & the writing was relatively poor because of a few nonsensical & random plot devices that were thrown in for no apparent good reason (one example is as someone mentioned below, the proverbial white truck of doom making several appearances LOL). Would love to see a Korean, Japanese, or even Chinese, remake of this movie under a more skilled director & production team. I imagine it could be really good if they kept the essence of the movie, including the strong romantic element with all the skinship. Watch this if you're tired of "barely there" drama romance or if you dont have anything better to watch & want to try something different. 6.5/10
I couldn't tell how much time had passed at the end when they had visited the grave, so I'm curious as to whether…
Well, your comment is 4 years old so I don't even know if it's still worth answering, but I will anyway.
Don't know if you remember, but there's a scene in the movie where Gabriel runs into another ghost, the guy who was looking at his family thru the window. They asked each other how long have they been dead & Gabriel answered 2 years. So that last scene where she's pregnant, the baby is definitely Dennis' because we know that Gabriel's been dead for at least 2 years, and by the time the scene at the grave site occurred, likely more.
Honestly, I don't get the hype about this drama. I felt the exact same way as you! I found the FL insufferable…
What does my personal life have to do with this discussion? This is a idiotic question & shows that you can't hold a debate without getting personal. It's a reflection of an insecure person who can't stand on the merits of their arguments so they resort to ad hominen attacks instead. Shame on you.
I've said what I had to say about the drama. If you think cheating is okay, then fine. That's on you.
