Grrr, attack of the computer, just like what happened to you! I tried writing to you 3 times and every time my computer would freeze and I lost everything I wrote. Don't you just hate when that happens???
Anyway, I love hearing about people's drama stories. It's so interesting how Korean pop-culture has enchanted an entire world! Korean cinema was my gateway to Asian dramas. I started in the fall of 2012 after seeing a bunch of really exciting Korean films at a film festival. After the festival I wanted more so I did a search online and came across gooddrama.net where I discovered a whole new whole of films. I felt like a kid in a candy shop! lol
I remember watching A Moment To Remember with Jung Woo Sung and I absolutely loved that movie because it was so heartbreaking and yet sooooo romantic! hehe I know you're probably rolling your eyes at how cheesy I'm being. Needless to say, I fell in love with Jung Woo Sung oppa and I wanted to see more of him so I went looking for his stuff and stumbled across kisskh where I discovered the world of drama!
Padam Padam ended up being my first ever K-drama. I loved it! I then went on to watch Autumn's Concerto ... I believe it was my 1st T-drama and my 2nd or 3rd drama overall. One of THE most makjang dramas I've ever seen with THE most annoying music I've ever heard. I got the mother of all headaches every time I watched that show. I don't know how I made it to the end. Maybe because despite how horrible it was, I did like the core tenets of the plot. It was also the first and one of very few dramas where I experienced 2nd lead syndrome. Normally, I hate 2nd leads. I find them super annoying 9.9 out of 10 times.
Aside from Padam Padam, I watched some older K-dramas like Save The Last Dance For Me, 18 vs 29, Unexpected You and so on, but none of the popular classics like BOF, Full House came on my radar (and it's a good thing they didn't because dramas like BOF & Heirs define everything I can't stand about K-drama). I didn't really like any of those oldies I watched either. The MDL community recommended I watch Queen In-Hyun's Man ... started out great, but slowly started to get on my nerves so I dropped it 15 episodes in. Kind of silly of me to drop a drama when there's only one episode left but I couldn't be bothered anymore. I had lost all interest. I was about to give up on Asian dramas all together and then I watched Lovers and LOVED it!
It's not a very popular drama among even more mature drama fans, but it totally worked for me. I loved the male lead played by my darling, Lee Seo Jin. Lovers renewed my faith in Asian dramas ... then not long after I watched Golden Empire, which was such a powerful drama. Having 2 fantastic drama experiences in a row made me stick around in dramaland for another 1.5 yr before I started to grow tired of them again in mid 2014.
Of course, before that time I watched some J-dramas too. I remember watching Oshiin many years ago when I was kid with my mom, but since I can barely remember much about that show, I list my official 1st J-drama as Pride. I loved it! Fell in love with Kimura Takuya. Then I watched Brother Beat, Orange Days, Buzzer Beat ... loved all of them!!!
I tried C-dramas last. I think my first was Sealed With A Kiss and damn, that drama was something else. It's definitely not a drama for everyone, but I enjoyed it! I fell in love with Harwick Lau and I have to admit his character in the drama too, even though he was a jerk most of the time. This drama featured some very adult themes such as (mild) bondage/submission (do you even know what that is? ;), which is one of the reasons why I have a soft spot for C-dramas because they take risks that J, T and certainly not K-dramas would ever take. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone under 30 to be honest because while I may like the male lead in the drama, it's not ideal for any young woman to idolize a man like him in real life if they don't know exactly what they're getting themselves into. You'll only understand this if you've lived a little and have that valuable life experience to separate fantasy from reality. Anyway, this is so far removed from the dramas that you like that I don't have to worry about you ever watching it, and even if you do watch it, I am pretty sure you'll hate it! You'll probably drop it after ep 1! haha
Other C-dramas followed, most underwhelming but still watchable/enjoyable. I discovered guys like Jerry Yan who I loved in Loving, Never Forgetting & Wallace Chung in Too Late To Say I Love You and You Are My Sunshine. I hated You Are My Sunshine though ... I loved Wallace's character (because seriously this man can never do any wrong, acting wise. He's dynamite!), but I couldn't stand how the female lead was written and how the actress played her. She played the character literally like a 12 yr old child. Now, imagine a 30 odd yr old man having relations with a 12 yr old ... that's the vibe I got from the drama so I couldn't enjoy it. Wallace's talent was totally wasted here.
Anyway, there you have it ... my drama journey. I've watched a lot of dramas that I remember fondly but sadly it always takes a long time to find my next great drama, which is what's so frustrating about watching Asian dramas. You have to go through a lot of crap to find the gems.
I'm American, but living in Northern Europe currently, dongsæng. ;) Thank you for the Easter Wishes, I don't suppose you celebrate Easter in Morocco ... or do you? I know Morocco is mostly a Muslim country, but perhaps you're Christian? Speaking of Morocco, I was planning to spend this Easter holiday there, but then decided against it because I felt 10 days wasn't long enough to explore your beautiful country! I'm kind of regretting that now ... so boring here during this time of year...
The is the best DRAMA ever, it totally beats Bridal Mask, Secret Garden, Signal, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter,…
I got bored with Western shows when I discovered Asian dramas in 2012, then in 2014 Asian dramas started to lose their appeal for me so I quit for 2.5 yrs and got into Western dramas again. Not as much as I used to watch before ... but 1 or 2.
I realize that as I get older I've gotten pickier and pickier about what I watch. Shows that would have interested me previously no longer do. Whether western or Asian, I used to start watching a show, no questions asked. Now, there's no more of that. In fact, I've come to realize that Asian dramas are not really my cup of tea anymore. I prefer Asian films because they're more realistic and grown up. It's really funny that even though Asian dramas are not really my thing anymore, I do prefer their wholesomeness over Western shows. Western shows have gotten too political for my tastes so I can only take them in small doses, and only shows that i really really love, like PB.
If Asian romcoms were less childish, silly and super cliche, and if their other genres weren't so depressing ... they would've been perfect. But ah well, that's life for you ... bitchy til the end. haha
Dramas from both regions have to be really special to grab my attention these days. Right now, it's Easter holidays where I live and I just want to relax and relieve my stress so I watched AOHY & I just wrapped Hapi Mari this morning. They served their purpose.
I can't believe you don't like Soo Hyun Joo! lol How can you not like Soo Hyun Joo? He is by far one of THE best character actors in Korea. And he is absolutely brilliant in Golden Empire! I haven't seen Chaser yet ... actually I was wondering if I should start it or Punch (both of these dramas are written by the same writer as GE so I know they'll be good). What about Soo Hyun Joo don't you like? Explain it to me.
The is the best DRAMA ever, it totally beats Bridal Mask, Secret Garden, Signal, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter,…
I'll defintely watch PB, S5. Just waiting for all the episodes to air. I don't have high hopes for it, but I'm glad to be seeing some of my favourite characters again and the bone-chilling suspense was always what made PB great! I'd watch it regardless, even if it wasn't good. No other season can top S1, anyway, if you ask me.
I like fantasy so GoT is my cup of tea. There's also suspense, mystery, romance ... lots of different elements to the show to keep you watching. Spartacus is actually based on the life of a real person that lived in ancient times. He led a slave rebellion against the Romans. It's kind of like Prison Break set in 68-69 BC. This was one of my favourite shows on TV. Doubt you'd be into them though because there's plenty of violence and sex to go around.
Son Hyun Joo ahjussi ...? If we're thinking of the same guy, I LOVE him. He was so so so good in Golden Empire. Alongside Go Soo ... they were just dynamite. As a matter of fact the entire cast did a phenomenal job in this drama. THE best written k-drama I've ever seen and one of the best in general, of all dramas. If you like business focused dramas with an entre of revenge, go for it. I would be curious to hear your thoughts. I remember this drama kept me up until all hours of the night and i had to go to work the next morning. My friend and I discussed the drama to death ... it was THAT good and the plot and characters were brilliantly crafted. Watch it, watch it, watch it!
I started this drama based on people's review. Everybody is saying it's a great drama etc. But I find…
Hehe, don't mind me Lucy ... I'm just pulling your leg. At 27 I'm sure you know about the birds and the bees. ::wink wink::
I watched the original Taiwanese Fated To Love You before seeing the k-version ... it was so messy, but I did manage to finish it. Just barely. In terms of the relationship, it was way more realistic than the k-Fated, but fell short in every other way. K-Fated was better production wise ... better cameras, better directed, better actors, better comedy ... but yeah, the relationship between the couple was better in the t-version, imo. I loved Jang Hyuk's wacko laugh. He made me lmao. In general I like comedy, but not when it's used as a gimmick or filler to halt the romantic development of the plot. K-dramas do this a lot and I hate it. I like mature comedy that's naturally blended into the plot, a great example for me would be Lovers. While I did have a few laughs from K-Fated, it wasn't enough to make me keep watching.
Maybe if I wasn't already familiar with the story and know that the relationship was the focus ... maybe I could have just accepted it as a great comedy drama. But since I had watched the original before this one, I know the story was centred around the romance, thus I had hoped for a slightly more mature development of the love line, esp given that Jang Hyuk & Jang Nara are not kids. They're mature people. At some point, when you reach a certain age, you have to stop playing in these silly dramas. lol
If it were a novel I could see myself enjoying it a lot more too.
Yeah, I think I came across that C-drama and decided against it. C-dramas are trial and error affairs. Sometimes you find some really watchable ones, other times they make you want to swear off C-dramas forever. lol If you ever decide to give them another chance let me know and I'll do my best to rec a decent one to you. Be aware that romance is always a staple in C-dramas, though, even when it doesn't take centre stage. It's alway omni-present.
The is the best DRAMA ever, it totally beats Bridal Mask, Secret Garden, Signal, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter,…
Oh, I never said it did. I just meant that if I have to choose between a show like IRIS or Signal/Voice ... I'd choose IRIS because I like when there's a mixture of genres, esp if romance is included. Believe me, the vast majority of shows I watch and are my all time favourites tend not to have romance or have it only as a side order. But unlike you, I don't mind when it's there. I'm happy either way. One of my top favourite Asian drama is Golden Empire. Zero romance. One the other hand my other top favourite is Lovers, which is all about the romance although it did have a gangster/crime sub-plot. Western shows ... Prison Break is one of my all time favourites, Game of Thrones, Spartacus etc. Crime & Thrillers with a side order of romance is my favourite combination.
I love movies ... I work in the film industry so that's a given. Come on, are you serious? Not all Asian movies are about sex and violence! lol I can name tons of great Asian films that have absolutely nothing to do with any of that and they're masterpieces. You shouldn't be so biased, Lucy! Thought you said you were open-minded and flexible? :p
I'm staying far away from HJW. I don't like her and I doubt I ever will.
I started this drama based on people's review. Everybody is saying it's a great drama etc. But I find…
And did you see all those pro gangstas being outrun and out fought by slight 40kg Korean women in 6inch heels? The cops were the dumbest of the dumb. The whole show became laughable after the first 10 eps or so. The end in particular totally pissed me off.
I agree that in general Japanese dramas tend to pack more substance. They are definitely more down to earth than k-dramas where everything's glossy & all about money, status and chæbols and everyone wanting to marry up. Some of the best romance dramas I've seen have been older Japanese ones from the 90s, nevertheless they too are not without their usual cliche & tropes that make you go WTF. I can pretty much predict how all Asian dramas will unfold, frame by frame, regardless of country of origin. That's why I get burned out on them so easily. AOHY is my first drama since 2014. Ultimately I watch them not for their originality ... but as an escape, a glimpse into another culture so even though some countries may produce better dramas than others, I don't care. I watch them all as long as the story line speaks to me. Bonus if actors I love are in the cast.
Sex scenes are not essential to telling a love story, but for me what's important is a realistic portrayal of intimacy between lovers. Real kissing and natural, non-awkward physical interactions ... which doesn't necessarily have to lead to and or depict sex. But just something that's believable. We all know that as grown adult people claiming to be madly in love with each other don't behave like elementary school children around each other.
I'm way too grown for wide eyed, oops I fell and landed on your face type kissing and hugs where a real couple would've actually kissed. Maybe when I was in my teens I would have found this stuff funny and cute ... now it's just damn annoying and this alone will make me drop a show. It happened with Korean Fated To Love You, which I know you loved based on your rating ... the characters were cool, but after a while the moronic humour and childish romantic interactions between the leads got on my nerves. I do love Jang Hyuk and his character was crazy and great in a very adorable way, but not even for him could I continue. It's very rare that I drop a drama, but I had to give this one up. It had every last cliche & trope I hate about K-dramas.
Which C-drama did you try to watch? I think every country have their pros and cons. I like C-dramas because they're different in a way that K and J dramas aren't. It's hard to explain, but where J-dramas shy away from romance and K-dramas are way too silly and fluffy in the way they portray romance ... C and T-dramas if you come across some of the decent ones strike a decent balance. For eg, I really enjoyed Loving, Never Forgetting, Someone Like You, Sealed with a Kiss (this one is really for mature audiences only -- not because of any bed scenes or anything like that, but the themes are very mature), Too Late To Say I Love You, MARS. Not saying any of these were really great, great dramas but they were decent.
May I ask where are you from? It's funny you say you're open-minded and flexible (was that a jab at me btw because I said I'm biased against noona romance? lol) and yet you you say you don't like romance and or bed scenes. You do know that love and sex are natural human functions, right? That's how you were born. LOL :p
I FUCKING LOVE IT! I NEVER SAW SUCH AMAZING KISSES LIKE ON THIS DORAMA! AMAZING COUPLE! Yeon Woo Jin I LOVE YOU!
Yeah, well, watch more ... and not these cheesy romcom ones if you want to see realistic kissing between adult people. You haven't seen a good kiss yet if you're going ballistic over these one. lol
The is the best DRAMA ever, it totally beats Bridal Mask, Secret Garden, Signal, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter,…
I have both IRIS and Athena on my to watch list. I've been putting off watching though because I don't like sad endings in dramas. I'm more able to tolerate sad endings in movies because you spend less time getting invested in the characters. But yes, overall these dramas are more my type than say Signal, even though it's on my PTW list too. I do think having a couple you can root for make things way more interesting. I checked out Voice about an hour ago and it's not speaking to me. I love Jang Hyuk, but if I'm not getting some good vibrations from the drama I won't start it.
You know the same reason you don't like Sung Joon, the reason why you can't stand his face? It's the same reason why I don't like Ha Ji Won. I have never liked her in any dramas that I have seen and I only found her tolerable in the movies Closer to Heaven (the first time I came across her as an actress) and Chronicles of a Blood Merchants. Otherwise, I mostly want to snap her neck when she shows up my screen. I don't know why, but she strikes me as a very fake and pretentious person.
I started this drama based on people's review. Everybody is saying it's a great drama etc. But I find…
Yup, I'm your unnie. I'm 34, will be 35 later this year. I still can't believe it because in my head I still feel like a 16 yr old kid.
I love Jang Hyuk and Lee Byung-hunny. I love a few of the young guys too, but the older chaps are more my cup of tea.
I will watch a pure romance drama if it's executed well. I like romance so I don't mind. There's a drama called Too Late To Say I Love You, set in war time China and revolves around the passionate love life of an army general and his lady love. This is the kind of romance that's right up my street. Aside from the crap ending and a few hiccups in the 2nd and 3rd acts I love this drama. So rich with subtext and passion! Wallace Chung is just ... damn! I don't even have words. If you're into C-dramas and willing to give a dramatic romance a chance I'd
I'd recommend this. It's not perfect, but very watchable. And it doesn't just revolve around romance. There's a war going on which makes the stakes even higher because no one knows what's going to happen or who's going to survive. Lots of double crossing, revenge and assasinations taking place amidst all the passionate love between the leads!
The romance in Cruel City made perfect sense to me. Would the show have been less enjoyable without it? No, but it made sense that it was there. Hey, even assassins need and have a woman to help them relieve all that built-up tension. The business of being a hired gun ain't easy! LOL I agree though that the romantic scenes were so scarce that they might as well have left them out. If you're going to add a love line, don't half-ass your way through it. Give us the real deal. Anyway, it is what it is. Ultimately I was disappointed with CC and gave it only a 7 I think (it started off as a solid 9). The lacklustre romance was the least of its problems, in my opinion. I meant to write a review for it but never got around to it. Let's just say that all the plot holes and inconsistencies did not withstand the gaze of scrutiny.
I don't really like noona romances, to tell you the honest truth, so I will probably never watch Last Cinderella. I am biased in that I always feel the young guy will leave the older woman once the honeymoon phase is over. Or that the woman, after a few years, will constantly feel insecure about the age gap while she ages and her man is still young. For me, when the man is older, the woman is in a more advantageous position than vice versa. I've also seen in real life where noona romances are less likely to work out than an older guy / younger girl relationship. I know there are exceptions to every rule, but it's just not my thing.
The is the best DRAMA ever, it totally beats Bridal Mask, Secret Garden, Signal, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter,…
Haha, I guess we do! But Shin Se Gi is worth the fight. lol
I was about to ask you how Bad Boys is. I've been meaning to watch it for the longest while. How are you liking it? It has quite a number of actors that I like and I love that it's action-packed, although a side order of romance would have been nice. Just to raise the stakes and spruce things up a bit.
No, I haven't seen King 2 Hearts and I probably never will. That's because I am absolutely not a fan of the leads, particularly the female lead. She is at the top of my black list. The guy I know is popular with drama fans, but I haven't seen him in anything to date ... and nothing about him tempts me to voluntarily check out any of his shows.
People have recommended My GF is Gumiho to me but just one look at the trailer and I know it's exactly the kind of silly romcom k-drama that I hate. I also tried watching that movie he did with Moon Chæ Won and I couldn't get past the first 5 mins. I checked out Madame Antoine when it was announced and I knew immediately it would be a ridiculous drama. I can tell when a drama is going to be crap just by reading the synopsis and or watching the trailer so I didn't even bother to start that one.
I started this drama based on people's review. Everybody is saying it's a great drama etc. But I find…
P.S. You should probably avoid High Society then because in that he plays a pretty haughty, ambitious guy looking for ways to step up in life. His character wasn't a bad guy though. Against all odds, I ended up liking that drama a lot more than I thought I would. The 2nd lead couple was a huge hit with fans. They were cool, but the leads were the best part of the show for me. Loved the dynamic of their relationship.

Honestly if you got mad at DK and hated on him for an innocent mistake in Another Oh Hæ Young, I really don't know how you're going to fare with Kang Tæ Joo in Que Sera Sera. He doesn't start off as the most likable guy, but he grew so much as the show progressed. Again all credit to Eric's charisma. He does a great job bringing the character to life and making the audience sympathize with him even though he makes some really bone-headed choices throughout the show. Where DK is a decent guy from the get-go, Kang Tæ Joo has somewhat of a questionable character to start off, but subsequently becomes a good guy as he learns a few life lessons. Still that drama holds a special place for me, though it was a freakin' roller coaster, because that's where I first met Eric, with his fine self!
I checked your list too, we have a few shows in common: Time between Dog & Wolf (I am a Junki fan). Oguri Shun, the ultimate bad boy ... love him. I like Ji Sung, but I am not in love with him like say Eric or Shun. Our ratings of said shows diverge though. I'm probably your unnie so my fav actors tend to be older, more mature guys. While I like guys like Junki, he's way to effeminate in his looks and actions for my tastes. Like I said I like men with a little edge to them. I love those masculine, manly types. Yes, I do.
For a girl who doesn't like romance you sure do watch a lot! haha I love romance. I love pretty much all genres except sci-fi, and I like when there's an equal mixture of genres in a show rather than just one. My favourite combination would be romance & crime (gangster flicks). That's why dramas like Cruel City & Time between Dog & Wolf work so well for me. Another reason I like romance is because it acts as a back up when other genres in a show aren't executed well. Often times the romance would keep me watching a show long after I've lost interest in other aspects of it.
But I do agree that most k-drama romance is just pure foolishness. Cheesy, too much fluff, not enough substance. Very rarely do I come across a romance drama that does romance the way I like it. Lovers was really the last time I saw a romance I really enjoyed a k-drama. Maybe It's Okay, Love too. Some older Japanese dramas are also good in the romance department. If there's romance in a show, there has to be realistic intimate relations between the characters who are supposed to be lovers. If there's all this fake kissing and awkwardness -- the overuse of hugs and slapstick comedy to avoid intimacy between the characters (as is widely typical in most dramas) -- then that's enough to ruin the show for me.
The is the best DRAMA ever, it totally beats Bridal Mask, Secret Garden, Signal, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter,…
Seriously, GREAT choice. If at some point you watch it and end up liking it, you can curse me out for putting you off it, but for now I think you're saving yourself a whole lot of grief!
Haha, which one of his personalities did you like ? Of course, the bad boy one was my fav. I'm one of those women who like bad boys -- the redeemable, none crazy ones, of course. Shin Se Gi was too hot to resist. lol But I admit his normal personality, Do Hyun, is also nice.
I tend to like men & male leads who have a little edge to them. Nothing too extreme or abusive, but just that edge that makes you swoon. Guys like Jin Sang and Park Hoon in AOHY are absolutely not my type, which is probably why I didn't enjoy their story arcs as much. Way too childish & ridiculous for my tastes.
I started this drama based on people's review. Everybody is saying it's a great drama etc. But I find…
Alright, fair enough. While I liked DK, I can appreciate he may not be everyone's cup of tea.
I would date him in real life, though. He's one of the nicer K-drama male leads I've come across. Eric's other role, in Que Sera Sera, was worse, but I ended up loving that guy anyway too because Eric is such a charismatic actor ... he plays those good bad boys really well. You can't help but fall for them. But okay, seems like we have different tastes in men, which if you think about it is good thing. We won't have to fight over the same guy like the 2 HYs, right? LOL
With that said, I struggled through the drama. I skipped through several episodes that were obviously there only as fillers and was tempted to dump the thing several times so I do understand your sentiments though our dislike may be for different reasons. The drama is problematic in more than one ways. Overall, I probably never would have watched this drama if it wasn't for Eric. I wasn't interested in watching his previous drama, Discovery of Love, so I figured I'd give this a shot because this guy only does a drama every 2-3 yrs or so. Prior this I hadn't watched a k-drama in 2.5 yrs because I get tired of how silly & repetitive they can be.
Haha, you're funny. Sounds like I'm talking about my ex, huh? I'm actually on good terms with my 2 exes ... and I do wish them happiness in their lives even if I end up not being too fond of their new women so yeah, you read that right. haha! :p
As for Sung Joon being a good kisser ... you didn't notice? Check out Can We Get Married & High Society ... the guy can kiss! I love it! I hear the kisses are epic in I Love Romance 3 too, but I haven't seen that. Exactly why don't you like Sung Joon?
The is the best DRAMA ever, it totally beats Bridal Mask, Secret Garden, Signal, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter,…
I often find it easier to sympathize with the male leads in dramas because they tend to be better written than the female ones. Sadly. More nuanced, more true to life. But lord save me did I HATE that guy who was the lead in Temptation! Even to this day that drama still makes me want to vomit. I don't think there'll ever be another drama that can ever top Temptation in how utterly despicable, nasty and terrible it was. AOHY doesn't even come close. Stay far, far, far, far away!
I started this drama based on people's review. Everybody is saying it's a great drama etc. But I find…
Haha, Eric reminds you of Sung Joon? How? I don't see the resemblance, but okay. I don't mind Sung Joon ... I mostly like him because he's always a great kisser in his dramas, which makes me believe he could possibly be a greater kisser in RL too. Yes, I'm a weirdo, pervert like that ... ha!
But back to DK, I think you misunderstood his character. He felt pity for both HYs because he's an empathetic guy who was willing to sacrifice his own happiness so HY1 wouldn't feel abandoned by yet another person she loved. By the end of the drama he realized that in his dying moment he'd look back on his life and have tremendous regrets for living only in service of others and ignoring his own happiness. So, he didn't pity her out of malice, but out of love. He said it himself, when you love someone, you pity them and want to spare them from heartache. I can relate to this because I feel the same way about many beloved people in my life.
I think he definitely did love her ... that's why he was so crushed when she left & it took him over a year to get over her. As usual, though, overbearing, meddlesome Korean drama mothers interfere in their adult children's lives and make things worse (I sincerely hope most K-mothers are not this way IRL). HY1 heard that tape out of context. Just because he said what he said doesn't mean he didn't love her. If she had stuck around and confronted him, maybe she would've understood what he meant. But once again you see grown women behaving like spoiled brats. Too immature to deal with their problems like adults do so they take off without a word.
As for HY2 he pitied her because she kind of made herself pitiful. She was heartbroken and desperation for male attention & affirmation because she had such low self-esteem. So she misconstrued his feelings for her then turned around and blamed him for her own mistake. She was too desperate for a man to want her and read what she wanted into his actions. Not because someone is nice to you means they're romantically interested in you. This has happened to me quite a lot in real life ... I'm kind to a guy and suddenly he thinks I want to be in a relationship with him. No. I certainly don't want to sleep with every guy I'm nice to. It's called being a decent human being.
HY2 reminded me of those clingy, emotionally unstable women who always have to have a man in their lives to feel good about themselves. As he told her being nice to her isn't a crime. DK is a decent guy that's why he tried to alleviate her pain and look out for her when she was too naive and stupid to look out for herself (case in point, when that sleazy delivery guy tried to make his move). His only fault is that like most men in real life ... he doesn't know how to process and express his feelings so rather than trying ... he leaves things unsaid and make the situation even worse. Women often need that confirmation from men that they're loved, esp clingy women like HY2. When the man doesn't know how to say it, the woman jumps to all kind of crazy conclusions and that's exactly what she did.
DK was cautious about expressing his love because of his own hang ups: 1) what his father said about things being transient 2) actually losing his dad and having to watch him die at such a young age. His dad was the only parent that showed him any real affection and love and when he lost him, he became stunted emotionally and his crazy ass mother further traumatized with her wild behaviour. She certainly didn't help his development in any way and 3) being left at the alter would be traumatizing for anyone; think about the humiliation, then you find out that your girl is in Paris ... posing all giggly with some other guy on Facebook. Of course he wouldn't open himself up so easily to the next woman.
In his own way, I think DK was more desperate for love than HY2, but could never fully ask for it or release himself to it ... so he closed himself off. He had to learn how to love from a woman like HY2 who wore her heart on her sleeve.
I like DK because he's a real man. He takes care of his business without whining and blaming others. Sure, he makes his own set of mistakes but he owns them, he keeps on living and trying to do right by those around him. Yes, he's flawed, but inherently good.
HY2 is also good, but she's not my kind of woman. I really dislike women like her in real life. The clingyness and cattiness she showed toward HY1 got on my nerves because it's exactly that type of behaviour that stereotypes all women as crazy, clingy, emotionally unstable and not supportive of each other. I do realize her character grew and came to realize this somewhat ... given that she & HY1 buried the hatchet toward the end ... but still for some women this clingyness & cattiness is inherent to their nature. They can mature and control their behaviour to an extent, but it never truly goes away. That's why even though I don't dislike HY2, I don't like her either. I'm indifferent to her. I care about DK the most and want him to be happy. Since she makes him happy, I had to accept her.
LOL :p
You can check out some of my favourite nice guy male leads here: http://mydramalist.com/list/Y4B0KELd
