Did you watch 90 mins with Eng subs? And if so where did you download it from? It's on Asiatorrents but apparently the available sub (from Jan 2013) is horrible.

I think you and I look for pretty much the same thing in dramas. However, interestingly I rated most of your favs 7 or below. I did quite enjoy The Greatest Love & Coffee Prince, but they were extremely draggy which in turn reduced the score. Secret Garden I didn't really like. I'll check out some of your other favourites. Princess' Man perhaps. I've been meaning to start this for ages! About time I get around to it even though it sounds like a roller coaster of emotions. You should definitely watch MARS! I think you'll like it!

What roles would those be?

I think they're bound to tell the same type of stories over and over again because there's still so much that's taboo in their society: Divorce, fornication, cohabiting, single parenthood, individualism and the list goes on. Not that most of these are anything to aspire to for any society, but they make for great storytelling.

I've seen where writers do try to experiment with different character arcs, but if said character is framed by the same type of rigid, cliche story arcs their potential is wasted. A pity.

Ahhh the names are almost the same!

Yoon Sang Hyun totally killed Oska, but half the time he was talking too loud. I can't understand why nobody told him to tone it down! No matter, I still dug him real bad.

hehe holy shit on toast! LMAO!!! That sounds horrible, but you certainly have a way with words, kid!

Anyway, I watched Secret Garden for Hyun Bin & the weight of Kim Eun Sook's pen, but both disappointed me here. I didn't like eonni's writing. It affected Binnie's performance. He came across as such a wimp in this drama. With HJW no amount of good writing can make her shine as far as I'm concerned because to me she's just a bad actresss. She was the least of my problems in this drama though. The writing is what I hated. Very draggy.

And you say I'm 'venturing' into the mushy fluffy side of dramas. Curious to know where I resided prior to this???

She really pissed you off didn't she? I feel your pain given that you actually watched the whole damn thing from start to finish.

So hey I'm watching Secret Garden. I don't love it, but I do love me some Yoon Sang Hyun who I'm just now discovering. I seem to remember us bickering over some guy who played an annoying 2nd lead in a drama, I can't remember which ... was it him?

Whatever I said about him, scratch that! This guy is really sexy! :)

Cheers, that bloody ending is so screwed up. I'm pissed & I didn't even watch the drama! I will never watch a drama by this writer, never. She's a crazy old biddy who needs to put down her pen & go hang out at some retirement home on Jeju Island. :)

Woot! Starting this now. Yoon Sang Hyun AND Go Soo? Why yes, yes I think I shall. ;)
Ok, I'll pass then. I was only remotely interested in watching this because of Go Soo & Yoon Sang Hyun, but most early 2000s kdramas are total misfires for me so nah-ah. Thx for the head's up.

I think I know what you mean. I find slightly amoral (or simply atypical) characters more interesting too (but not when their potential is wasted on 2nd lead stupidity). One such character which comes to mind is Jang Tæ Joo in Golden Empire. Have you seen it? If not I can highly recommend it. It would be interesting to see who's side you take in this twisted game of human chess.

I appreciate what you said about the trajectory of the story in Asian dramas being same. I completely agree. I don't think this is due to a lack of creativity per se. I think it's a cultural thing. Koreans seem to follow a formula for every single aspect of their lives. To deviate from said formula, to think outside the box, is to disturb a key value of Confucian society: harmony.

When it comes to the male leads you're right (the same can also be said of female leads). On the other hand there are some standard lead characters who still manage to capture my attention ... either because the story is well written or an imaginative actor who imbues the character with an attractive quality.

Do you think male leads are too perfect? Most of the time I find them wonderfully imperfect! That's what's so great about Asian dramas ... unlike American shows where showrunners are often too afraid to imbue characters with real human flaws in fear of offending the sensibilities of the American viewership.

I've seen spiteful, childish, controlling, rude, deeply insecure male leads (female leads too). Even while these behaviours may annoy me it adds another dimension to the character which I appreciate it.

Most of the time 2nd leads annoy me to no end because they're often so poorly written. They have no pride or sense of self-worth. Not to mention their stupid noble idiocy completely defies human nature. Their addition to a story's arc is often glaringly contrived, simply placed there to serve the writer's purpose rather than the story's.

You seem to prefer supporting characters more than lead characters a lot. Intriguing. I'm almost the exact opposite with very few exceptions.

Wonderful Days doesn't sound like a drama for me at all, but what wouldn't I suffer thru for my Lee Seo Jin?

I've heard that Kim Hee Sun can be a rather annoying actress, however I'm more scared of the writer and her penchant for tragedy. I don't trust her to take me on a journey that I'll like more than not.

And this business about KHS throwing herself at some gangster (who isn't our lead) doesn't sit well with me at all. I like when leads only have eyes for each other even if they pretend otherwise. I wonder what is her motivation??? I sure hope it makes sense!
