First of all, definitely happy to see Oh No! Here Comes Trouble because it was definitely a highlight of the year for me! Sadly can't agree with the Japanese pick, but hey, I'm generally at odds with MDL there lol
1) 29 dramas from 2023 2) Japan 3) Romance, drama, comedy, youth, historical 4) Oh No! Here Comes Trouble and I Feel You Linger 5) Moonlight Chicken, it was a great drama and I especially liked the side couple. Nagatan to Aoto: Ichika no Ryourijou I also absolutely loved its vibes, the softness, the slice of life that permeated even in the ending songs where it showed an extension of the characters quietly cooking whatever they had made that episode. 6) Was fun and enjoyable, lots of good releases (and I also watched 20 other dramas from other years) 7) Onwards with the viewings! Hoping for good releases and hitting the bullseye for other dramas I choose to watch during the year that aren't from 2024.
To all of you writing to ask if this is BL or bromance. The beauty of this drama is that you can take it in any…
And for anyone wanting more of Yiyong and Guangyan, since they're highly shippable, there's always fanfics. AO3 has a few English ones, and I'm sure the fandom would welcome more writers ;)
I know the writers mentioned that the ranking were pulled considering the stats from August, but I am vindicated by the fact that Mitsushima Hikari would make it on the list if it was made now cause she's definitely amazing.
It's like the secrets that couples share and make sense only to them...And agreed! I feel the same way most of…
Yes, exactly that! A little odd to make it the title, I also thought it was very weird before I read the novel, but once you get all the meaning behind it it's hard not to love it.
Arguably a bad title over how misleading it is at first, but hey at least it gets your attention? lol
As someone very familiar with the novel, I just wanted to say that 'I Want To Eat Your Pancreas' is as shocking/misleading a title in Japanese as it is in English so I'd argue it's a lot more a case of [D] Bad Title than blaming it on the literal translation.
The title comes from a discussion the two leads have and the phrase comes up a few more times throughout the novel. By the end of the book I downright cried every time it came up l
Great article though, just wanted to add my two-cent when I saw your example! And while I agree with all that you said, a part of me has also been charmed by the bad translations and titles of asian dramaland and I find them quite endearing now, for the most part lol
Just finished Mr. Sunshine and tbh I don't mind sad endings but a lot of the deaths in the last 2 episodes made no sense or were for such a dumb reason that it just felt like they were trying too hard to make things tragic.
Haman and Haengrang dumbly died 'distracting' the Japanese, which had already been tipped off by the other old man into blindly searching for Aeshin in the town. Instead of dragging an empty palanquin around, the soldiers actually NOT finding the palanquin and wasting their time fruitlessly searching would've been so much logical? Aeshin coincidentally being right there and seeing them get shot, all the while not shooting down a single Japanese soldier, just made things even more eh for me
Eugene's death was also very dumb. He could have easily shot and separated the train compartments without necessarily being stuck with the Japanese soldiers on the other side. Much smarter to do that and shield yourself from possible gunshots INSIDE the train than dumbly use your body as a shield to protect your loved one.
Anyways, I haven't seen many on the list but I'm contesting Mr. Sunshine because the sad ending felt forced to me, like they wanted to try and make it as tragic as they could in the last 2 eps and it just ended up with some very dumb writing decision IMO.
I see Secret Love Affair getting the recognition it deserves, bless! I've been meaning to watch "Something In The Rain" for a long while now, this only makes me more excited to start the drama
I loved the cinematography and overall production of the drama. The colors, the angles; everything's so pleasing to the eye! The story failed to really grab me though.
I can't really place my fingers on it, but I couldn't become attached to the characters or to the story. It might be because there was so much going on. While in the beginning it's clear Natsume and Rimi are the protagonist, later on the drama puts a lot of focus on Akane, Eriko, and Sunny. Might have been a too much for so few episodes, in the end I feel I didn't get enough of any of their stories.
7.5 for me, because I did enjoy it, but it definitely could have been a lot better!
First one was Mei-Chan no Shitsuji for me, back in 2010 after catching a glimpse of it on Japanese TV while there. Got curious and decided to check it out with subs! It was so bad that I ended up taking another 1-2 years to give jdramas another try and actually getting into them lol
Currently halfway through the drama and I think you hit the nail in the head with this review. I agree 100% so far and it's a shame because this drama could definitely have been better
YES! HONESTLY. I loved the relationship between Jooran and Yeondeok, I thought there was definately something…
But then the last part just felt messy. Unlike some people I really enjoyed the reveal of it all being part of Japanese human experimentation, because honestly just knowing the Japanese really /did/ do a lot of experimentation on people just makes the whole idea scarier and more real tbh. But then all the fantastical elements near the end, especially the girl's fantastical powers due to said experimentation, kinda dampened a lot of the enjoyment. Very frustrating considering how great everything else had been
