So you're watching this for the BL and want some fandom-specific spoiler info: Watch Zettai BL s1, it's the mentioned Meryba concept of ep 1 and not in a romantic way.
All the main gay-presenting characters are killed off in the story as they are all Hashiba Hideyoshi's (director character) enemies for gaining power. Knowing director Takeshi Kitano's hot-takes in the past, I was already prepared. So while there's 2 short bed-scenes of different ships and famous actors involved.. Keep it in mind.
This movie had a few scenes I never thought I'd see in a Japanese movie, like a somewhat realistic Ranmaru and Oda Nobunaga relationship. But anyway, welldone realistic battles and lots of bloodshed.
Info (spoilers) below for BL fans wondering on whether to watch.
Well gay and BL(boy love) mean the same thing.. So yes, A BL pink film would be correct.
It both refers to gay relationships being depicted yes but they are their own genres within media due to appealing more to either gay men (gay films) or women (BL) as a general audience.
Just to get on the same page in regards to genre-labels and their meanings relating to gay media in Japan. Shounen-Ai: Gay media for women audience in 1970s originating from Shoujo Yaoi: Gay doujinshi-originated media for women audience JUNE: Shounen-Ai inspired magazine with gay novels Barazoku/gay manga: Gay media for gay male audience BL: Gay magazine-published media for women audience
Gay pink films originate from Barazoku (the gay magazine commisioned the first gay pink films in the 1980s) and feature a gay (cinema) sub-culture in Japan in a way that is less likely in BL. Gay pink films are more focused on the ero-aspect as sometimes 40% of the movie runtime is just dudes having intimate times together. Where BL is usually also focused on the romance a little more.
BL as a more specific genre originated in the 90s from a mixture of 2 gay-themed genres that existed and evolved at the time. Namely from the remnants of 70s Shounen-Ai publications in Shoujo magazines (Kaze to Ki no Uta) which had evolved into JUNE magazine novels with its tragedy storylines. Also of course fanmade Yaoi stories about existing anime-franchises with male characters like Captain Tsubasa or Gundam. Nowadays we do use BL to refer to the broader genre-encompassing idea of gay romance stories but this only happened post-2000s. Besides that, fans will still distinguish between BL and barazoku/gay comics most times due to difference in idealized bodytypes for characters.
So does gay and BL mean the same thing? Its both gay-themed media, but its very distinguishable in storyline (more focus on romance for BL or on eroticism for gay pink films) and tropes (seme & uke couple-dynamics in BL, Hattenba-settings in gay films) aside from that. So yes if you mean it featuring gay love, no if you mean in terms of media genre as defined by media-tropes and style.
But some gay pink films released for online distribution do use the ''BL'' label to advertise releases, so at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter as long as people know the history of the labels I guess.
huh!! how did she get to watch this drama?? was it dubbed in hindi and telecasted on Doordarshan? BTW I Live in…
I ended up watching a Youtube video about Japans soft power today. Turns out Japanese government made it free or even subsidized to show this series across Asia in an attempt to change their post-war image.
