I agree with you. Wan Ning (Li Meng) is one of the most memorable characters I've ever seen. Her traumatic past is a mitigating factor. On the other hand, nothing mitigates Shen Yu Rong, cruel by nature, driven only by cold ambition. Wan Ning lived a miserable existence, without receiving love from anyone. Destroyed by brutal traumas, she became a maladjusted person, mentally ill. She is a tragic character who transmits, to the viewer, ambiguous feelings that oscillate between repulsion and compassion.
