I wouldn't believe everything I read on the net. Unless of course, coming from an ofiicial source.
I’m not exactly an mdl viewer, I have been living on weibo and watching c dramas for a few years now . Cdrama still go through the censorship board even if a director made similar dramas many times and even if he adhered to all censorship guidelines. Military dramas usually go through multiple revisions by the board, a lot of them don’t get an airing license for years. Ace Troops is the fastest military drama on my memory to get an airing license.
The golden rule of good directing is “show, don’t tell”. And this drama rarely follows it. I understood the motivation of some characters , like Gu Yiye because the actor did a great job in making us sympathize with him and his character is also the most consistent not for various reasons. But Gao Liang something says one thing in his inner monologues and the does exactly the opposite. Then in episode 26 his personality makes an unexplained U turn without ever building it up. Same goes for JNZ and her sudden love for Gao Liang. Overall I find Ace Troops very engaging and I think all the characters are interesting. But the editing and, possibly, the writing is inadequate and simply unprofessional at times. I don’t think you need to get defensive because of it. One can love and enjoy the drama while also recognizing it flaws

But that is what it usually means in c ent. Normally (though, not always) they air the number of episodes that passed censorship, and the episodes that are presented to the censorship board are already a cut version with all extra or bad takes cut, so the comparison with cutting the movie from 10 hours to 2 is inadequate.
But as I said below the problem is not the number of episodes but bad editing choices that make you question characters’ motivation and leave glaring plot holes. The drama could be great with 20 episodes only if only the editor new what they were doing.
TV limit for c-dramas is 40 episodes. If they were just a web drama they could do more, but with tv broadcast…
Ace Troops doesn’t feel like it’s dragging cause there are constant time jumps and sometimes you actually wish they would slow down and let everything sink in. As you said, there are many scenes, specifically romantic ones, that add very little to the story. We could have learned about what happened to other comrades from the Live and Die Together company instead. So it’s not the length of the drama that’s the problem , it’s that they left out the parts that should have been there instead of cutting out the nonsense bits. Lots of weird choices by the editor

Then how come a new drama that just aired on HunanTV had more than 40episodes? 🤔 I think ideally they should limit dramas to 20 episodes, 40 is still too long and draggy

It is from an official source. When Ace Troops got an airing permit, it said 48 episodes. It’s kinda obvious from the editing and what some actors said about the cut scenes that they deleted lots of footage.
At first it was postponed because of the cyberbullying against lead actor, attempt at canceling him all that jazz.…
And now after having aired that patriotic drama HunanTV is just being disgusting cause they are run by corrupt capitals and don’t care about their viewers and reputation
Tencent should not sold TOOL to Hunan Tv at the first place. My heart burning with volcano right now.
The part about why they sold it to HunanTV is purely speculation. But the malicious suppression of OOL os a fact everyone can see at this point. Tencent infighting is also a fact, drama production teams are constantly competing for an air slot, promo etc. Just look how Tencent treated DC, they kept redirecting its heat to another *cough* drama on their own chart until fans pointed it out to them and complained formally. Good thing we had CCTV to do all the DC promo
You’re right. I’m never giving up on ool. I but I want to stop constantly waiting and thinking about it. It…
One more year and OOL will be an outdated 3 year old drama, just like The Wolf when it aired. Not sure if aired is the right word, they basically just spit out all episodes in one day without any promo, they know fans will still watch anyway. Maybe it’s better if OOL never comes out than get “aired” like they did with TW.
I'm never giving up on it. But other folks are welcome to do so. It's a battleground and I have faith we'll win.
You’re right. I’m never giving up on ool. I but I want to stop constantly waiting and thinking about it. It hurts less this way. They should have never announced it and dropped all the teasers on us back in August…I will be the happiest person on earth if it airs one day. If it doesn’t… Chinese entertainment would have lost probably one of the best projects ever.
