I'm pretty late to reading this but this was super insightful! I'm not a huge fan of medical dramas, so I'm not familiar with most characters/series mentioned. Still I thought this was a really sweet editorial, thanks for sharing it with us!
This is a really lovely article! It made me smile reading the different options, and reminisce a bit as well. A Girl and Three Sweethearts always does that for me!
Thank you very much for reading and leaving a comment, Rise! I would love to know your thoughts on the older Murakami…
You're most welcome! It's on the never-ending-list of things to visit when I can. (Unfortunately, I got slammed with work so... maybe not for a bit yet.)
I hope that he does talk about the animation. I get the feeling it might be the best fit of his image/original interpretation we've gotten yet. Although that's a sight unseen for me!
I'll start putting a bit of weight synchronicity out there! :)
I'm glad to see your editorial made to publication so quickly! Ever since you've mentioned working on it, I've been looking forward to it!
I was both surprised, and not, to realize that there are so many film adaptations. As you mentioned, most of which he rarely references, and there's barely any info on. Given how he's presented himself over the years, I get why. However, now that I'm aware of more of the older adaptations, I'm for sure going to track them down and give them a watch when I can!
I'm with you on saying Hanalei Bay, and Burning are two of the strongest adaptations. I still to this day don't quite agree with Burning's interpretations (need to revisit why), but I can appreciate that the director and screenwriter took creative liberties to make something original. As the author says his works seem to work best as inspiration, but not page-for-page adaptations.
Also as a side note, I'm stunned to find out that our first Murakami novel is the same one, and we even read it the same year!
I apologize for not having something more of substance to write, but thank you for writing such a beautiful review! Your writing style is so distinct that I really enjoyed reading and re-reading this post!
Also it seems to have inspired more then one user to give this drama a watch, which I'll consider it a win!
(I do apologize if this is a double post. Computer crashed the first time I tried to post this!)
As well as the behind the scenes of making this short film, with English subtitles again here: https://youtu.be/qqGmh8pXCPk?si=jFSIqeak7spZFZgi
Either way, consider me sat and I will curiously tune in to see which way this goes.
And it does come with English subtitles, so long as you make sure to mark that you want them.
I'll always be someone who recommends the original Kairo i.e. Pulse (2001). It's my all time favorite horror movie and I hope others watch it as well!
