I have watched so many dramas lately that started off great and just went down hill (missing 9, strong woman,…
I usually keep the writer-nim in mind when watching a series. Her stories have been pretty solid. If you haven't seen I Remember You, it's pretty amazing.
The whole...'I would only be gay for you, bro' sentiment was reallllly biphobic, or invisibilizing of…
Um... who are you to be a blatant misogynist? And for what reason, out of curiosity? I have literally no idea where you think you can insult me randomly without much critical thought?
The whole...'I would only be gay for you, bro' sentiment was reallllly biphobic, or invisibilizing of bisexuality/pansexuality. I mean... we get it, 'love is love,' and that's important, but making it seem like they'd jump on dating a girl if they had the chance (if it weren't for their 'same love,') makes me think that was an element they fail to explore -like that heterosexuality isn't more 'normal' and 'natural' than someone's queer identity. I keep comparing this to Make It Right (my absolute fav), and the fact that bisexuality is not only quite explicit in the series (MIR), they tackle it a lot better. You get the 'I'm only gay for you' vibe, but with other characters, like the Book and Frame storyline, as something more fluid. I understand why this series is popular, seeing as BL story lines ending in happiness are rare (which currently there are more works I'm more impressed by). I just wish their 'queerness' wasn't reduced to rooted homophobia (like, not explict, by more systematic in this case.)
I couldn't resist getting up to date... so I binge-watched all the aired episodes last night (the perils…
Agreed! I really loved I Remember You. I had high expectations for this drama once I saw that the same writer was doing this one. I believe she also wrote Protect The Boss. I love her strong female leads. I think she likes playing with her viewers to be honest lol I remember when watching IRY, I kept thinking *you know who* could never kill anyone, and then, well... I suppose we shall see. He could be connected to someone, or could be working for the DA guy (her ex's father). I had this radical theory that the amnesiac killer is/could be Eun Hyuk... but that wouldn't make sense because he was with her when she heard the *whistling* the second time. The only thing I could think of there is an accomplice... but, who knows. I think it's more probable he was the guy his ex cheated on with. But yes, he does seem like he knows what he's doing, or is covering up something. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out since at the end of episode 8, she was arranging to meet him.
It says it in the bio, so I'm sorry for confusing you! When he was in her apartment searching for evidence as a prosecutor, he picked up her childhood photo and said she looked 'familiar.' I just assumed his 'childhood first love' would relate to her somehow (dramaland connections, of course). And I don't think you missed anything... I don't recall that.
I couldn't resist getting up to date... so I binge-watched all the aired episodes last night (the perils of watching an airing drama, I never learn :'(
And I just wanted to say... (rant ahead...)
Even though Bong Hee's ex was killed in her apartment, shouldn't that set off some red flags for her? I mean... I know she eventually moves into her office, but there's a zero chance in hell I would spend a minute more in that place. I mean... if she REALLY thought about it. That jerk was there when 'she' could have been. If she reflects a little more about her situation, she could see that he was actually trying to kill her -the person he thought had seen something Or at least a visceral reason -ex was at her apartment and got killed -she could have been there. Because at this point, I'm convinced that it would be a bit stupid not to think otherwise.
I think that the cliches are cute... I'm happy we're getting an oblivious male lead when it comes to romance because it's usually the 'naive, innocent girl...' who gets 'tangled up' in a guy's web (AND lmao to Ji Wook's facial expressions, I REALLY love Chang Wook in this role! His 'skinship' with the wall, I've never laughed so hard in my life). I like the dynamics between the lead's, and the fact that it's totally normal and natural that Bong Hee was with her ex sexually, and there isn't a stigma about who is doing it with him (just some embarrassment), and I think that's a really nice addition to this drama.
I also totally think his 'first love' will totally end up being Bong Hee, that just seems so obvious at this point (when he looked at her childhood photo) -or at least knew her in the past.
And anyone else think the monk was referring to his cheating ex? Maybe that continually turned him into a cold and calculating prosecutor, and forgot about how 'justice' isn't as simple as 'jailing as many foreseeable bad people as possible?' just a theory... or that maybe he forgot about what else the monk said, like 'then you'll meet a woman who you'll cherish.' I'm not quite sure, just a theory at this point.
Now, as for Eun Hyuk... I think people are either convinced or are on the fence about him being the one that slept with Ji Wook's ex... I have a feeling he did, but maybe there was something else in the mix? I want to see how this plays out now that we have the ex (Yoo Jung) back into the picture. I really hope she doesn't turn out to be the one who went to get his forgiveness and now wants him back because she sees Bong Hee. I really like her straight-forward/strong personality. Even though she broke his heart, at least she's honest and admitted what she did was wrong. A self-reflecting, but shameless woman may add a bit more unnecessary drama (well, it's a drama), but I really hope that her and Bong Hee don't grow tense. It seems like they could genuinely be friends. Please make a budding womance between these two, writer-nim, and not a 'I'll fight for this man as if it were a competition' ... or at least make it humorous. I REALLY don't want Bong Hee to face another Ji Hae.
But this new 'forensic' investigator who is getting some direct killer vibes... I know all signs point to him now, but I wonder if it's truly him? Maybe it's a stalker? Or not... the liklihood is pretty high that he's the one.
I am enjoying this so far, I just hope we get to see some more developement on them actually working together. Even if it's by the end of the episode when they end up in the same office lol
The one thing that still baffles me about this series... is Fuse's inability to break up with his girlfriend until last minute, even after he said that he 'belonged' to Tee (which was hella adorable). I mean, aside from her appearing to be with a guy in the beginning (and spoiler, at the end of the first ep of season 2), she's not even confronted about her cheating (if that's what's she's doing? I mean, for the times we do see her, it just seems off). Yes, I get that Fuse 'cares' for his girlfriend, but to me, you cross some MF boundaries when you sleep with someone you grow to care about and that poor guy (Tee) can only think about how he doesn't want to ruin your relationship. 1) Fuse, you're an idiot for not setting the record straight and going to Tee faster. 2) Tee, you're not a disposable person. You have every right to love Fuse and want him as your partner. I'm still a bit rattled by this to be honest... and I'm happy someone (as it appears to be in the trailers) there's somone interested in Tee. I'm hoping Fuse wakes up and sees what he'd be missing out on/how he's deluded himself someone into thinking that his gf is someone he should still take care of. FFS, like even at the end of the first ep of season 2, Tee STILL had to remind him and Fuse 'thanked him.' BOIIIII... let the love triangle begin. Fuse is adorable, but I think I need him to trullllly see how valuable Tee is. Not that he doesn't... it's just that -you don't keep your relationship with your gf that damned long without reflecting enough on it. Let your ship sail and be honest about your feelings. Even if people get hurt, you'll be hurting yourself in the long run and the ppl around you. Peace out -still loved the series despite this. It has a lot more intimacy between the couples, and Frame/Book are great.
Okay... the synopsis is very misleading. I just started watching this series (about 6 eps in), but here's a more accurate depiction:
Tang Ning unexpectantly returns home to (China) after a letter is sent to her when she's completing her PhD in Law (it's stated a few times) at Harvard University. This trail leads her to a firm, unlike her praised Uncle/Aunt's business, and meets Zheng Hao, the 'mysterious' person in the letter who claims not to be the person she is looking for. There, she finds out that he's a lawyer for the firm she just go hired at (so she can investigate). She asks to become his assistant, and begins working alongside Zheng Hao. In a matter of time, Tang Ying finds out that her deceased father had a will, and that her right to inheritance (which was denied to her) is now a matter of figuring out what happened in the past, in order to find and know the content's of her father's will. In the meantime, she also spends time with Zheng Hao on cases.
I really think this one applies more. Maybe some of that angst is for later. Honestly, they bicker, but it's not like they don't get along as the description implies. She's intelligent/has a degree from a renowned school, and spends more time helping him because she wants to. Sorry, he's not exactly a hotshot lawyer. Sure, he knows his stuff, but he doesn't wear it on his sleeve. It's actually refreshing not to see a cocky/rich lawyer cast type.
What an absolutely beautiful drama. I put this on hold for such a long time... I regret not watching this sooner. I love the emphasis on friendship/dreams in this series. It was just so refreshing to see a character like Bok Joo.
If anyone ends up finding a site that is subbing this series (and preferably not dramacool -I know they uploaded it but they never do their own subbing), I would reallllly appreciate a link!!! (:
Their mother (the brother's in the series)... is just a bit too much sometimes. I mean,I know they both were going through a lot with his memory loss, but instead of valuing what Jie Teng did while Xi Ming wasn't home would have been so much more nice to see. I can't believe she had to count to see how old Jie Teng was by using Xi Meng's age... like, for real? In perfectly good health... that just makes me sad honestly.
I don't wanna disappoint you all,,,but I doubt there will be any form of romance...they may bond a little…
I agree, but... sure it may not be the 'central' focus of this show, which I don't mind anyway, but there are subtleties (of late: she mentions that she could 'date' if she wanted to, or the fact he wanted to emphasize a 'thanks' and not 'love in the flowers). I mean, boy... he's either gonna fall for her real hard (and I think his 'fiancee' will help with pushing them together whether she likes to or not) or it'll be playfully platonic lol. I mean, it just seems like the 'you know who we ship' will probably end up together (I mean... thinking about how they first met, and then how she 'felt' about that, I recall her wondering why her heart was racing/to some effect). The way Seol Ok continues to kickass in her mystery/detective solving is something that keeps me interested. But, after watching episode 6, I feel like by next week's episodes, if we get more of their 'bonding time' together, I feel like we'll be able to see where they're going. Or it may take a bit longer. I think right now it wouldn't make sense unless we learn more about her husband, and to see if she's still willing to be with him (if she falls for Wan Seung?) because she doesn't want to lose her 'family.' There was the scene before she passed him some documents when she looked inside and then cried... it just seems weird. I feel like she won't be with her husband at the end unless he turns out to be a really good guy (I mean he's already proven to be selfish, but is he protecting her by not 'telling' anone he's married because he'll have a ton of enemies or no? Regardless, I can see her character development here -going into a career as a detective if we get a time skip, or at least going back to school to be a cop? Because this woman is incredible and deserves the best future ahead of her!). But then we have the little clip when they first meet as teens, and it does make me feel like he didn't marry her without having feelings for her. And if her mother-in-law isn't behind any evil (which I don't know -did she have anything to do with her parents 'deaths' -I mean, my kdrama mind is whirling because as much as I think she loves her mother-in-law it seems like it's wrapped in a lot of gratitude like 'you did so much for me, how could I possibly hurt you?' kind of thing). On a side note, when I was watching 'You Are Surrounded' I wasn't sure Go Ara (spoiler here) would end up with Lee Seung Gi. That took a while for that sail to ship. Granted it had four more episodes, but all you can do is wait and see. We still have 10 more episodes to go :)
And it just seems weird to me... because the mother in law doesn't strike me as a bad person (yet?), I mean, usually you expect the 'don't divorce him no matter what,' you assume (or are told) that it is because of his cray in-laws or something, or that he's doing you wrong and you need to get more out of the bargin, or not give him the satisfaction/what he wants. I know Seol Ok is walking around her mother in law and sister in law like eggshells (moreso her mother in law)... but there has to be a reason why she's like that around her, or why they surveillance her like that. I just can't see it as they're 'using,' her for chores because she's not a great cook? I mean, I'm just trying to figure out these dynamics, so it'll be interesting when we see why they all act a certain way.
I just want to know ALL these past secrets already... it's emotionally killing me (okay,I exaggerate) but seriously whaaaat is up with the detective and our detective 'ahjumma,'... can't wait to see how this progresses!!! Especially Seol Ok... there is just so much more I'm sure we don't know about... especially regarding her supposed marriage...
I feel like... she's going to hit it big soon with an amazing romcom role (although she has dipped her toes in this genre so well already). I've been watching her dramas since Flower Boy Next Door (and before she was recognized outside of SNL Korea), and I knew she needed bigger roles because she just has such a unique presence (I kept wondering over time when we'd see her as a leading, strong/confident lady). I felt like I called this out years ago -people are gonna love her acting when we actually see more of her (I know, I'm such an egoist lol). I've watched her in interviews and I think she's trying to open up herself to new opportunities where she can see herself learning from her experiences moving foward. I feel like if she does an awesome job in Lookout (which I totally know she will) we'll see her in a lead project for a 16 or 20 episode drama soon (romance or not). Just a feeling. Fighting Kim Seul Gi!! On a side note, the fact that she's been doing guest spots on HIGH viewership shows is so smart -I'm rooting go you Seulgi!
That Qi wife is absolutely intolerable. I put this on hold for a long time, and now that I returned to finish it, I can't believe how she's treating Ya Lun. Didn't have the support from the Qi family for decades, and the moment he reluctantly decides to take steps forward for reconciliation this banshee comes up in here and tells him she's basically scared of him? Scared that she's going to lose money basically because he'll enter the picture (and do what exactly? He's a freaking doctor, he's not in business)... what an awfully corrupt way of looking at it. Afraid of losing her 'place' because she's attached to money and prestige? Honey, let me lend you some advice. You literally have no say in the matter, and you have no right to speak to him like that. If he wants a relationship with his grandma or father that's still not your business. What a spoiled prissy one. This is literally so skin crawling. I can't stand her.
Ok... I feel like it if this has already been said, I may be a broken record, but I get so damned tired. I mean…
Thank you for the post Astrologist. I echo everything you've been saying in terms of knowing what's up in SK regarding LGBTQ/equality related struggles. I've been watching K-Dramas for such a long time now, and I know a lot about SK culture from my own research/understandings of the country (because of my own interest in learning about the world of course) and its politics. I hope that less stereotyping and more visibility happens. I know some attitudes are changing, and that's a plus. I totally think it's important to bring up convos about gender equality, so I agree with you. I just hope we continue to see more diverse characters in the future. I'm enjoying everything else so far. It's irritating and I want to drop it, but I kind of want to see what happens. I totally know what you mean, I wouldn't blame anyone who drops this because they're offended/hurt by it. Just like any other drama out in dramaland. There are, however, some great Taiwanese, Thai, and some Chinese dramas that touch on LGBT stuffs in positive ways, which I'm grateful for because some of the really good ones are nice stories.
Ok... I feel like it if this has already been said, I may be a broken record, but I get so damned tired. I mean really damned tired of the stereotyping of gay men in Kdramas... let alone the erasure of lesbian or queer identities which are taboo in Kdramas (because of the overwhelming heterosexism). But seriously? 3 episodes in, and people 'act' a certain way for being gay? Or even subtle microaggressions about not being able to get married? I've already skipped ahead to know that she dreams about him dressing up like a woman and hitting on Ji Soo's character... like... men attracted to other men aren't women, and even if feminine men wanted to be with another guy, the stereotypes are just so bloody annoying. Reducing it to humor is annoying. I can do without that crap to be honest. Even if they assumed he was gay, could you make it funny without being a bunch of bigots? I am enjoying the strong Herculean/heroine female aspects of it, but that's been really bothering me. Why Whyyyy Whyyyy can't ya'll just not, please?

Episode 5 is subbed!!! :)
