A Visually Stunning Revenge Story, But the Pacing Lost Me Along the Way
I have very mixed feelings about this drama because I watched it in two parts. When I first started it, I was really enjoying the dynamics between the leads, the dark aesthetics, the slow-motion scenes, and the overall atmosphere. The storyline seemed interesting, and the actors worked really well together. At that point, I was honestly planning to give it a 9/10. However, I hit a drama slump around the middle and put it on hold for a while. When I finally picked it up again, the experience just wasn't the same. I started noticing things that hadn't bothered me as much before, especially the pacing, the editing, and how heavily political the story became. So, after going back and forth, I'm settling on an 8/10.
The biggest problem for me was the editing and pacing. The drama could be painfully slow in some parts, only to rush through important developments in others. The flashbacks, time jumps, and transitions between different events often felt disjointed, making it difficult to follow the flow of the story. At times, it felt like we were jumping from one thing to another without enough time to process what was happening. The complicated drug-related storyline also became increasingly confusing around the middle. I was initially interested in the revenge plot, but eventually, I found myself wondering what exactly all the trouble was leading toward. The political elements took up so much space that I sometimes lost sight of the main story.
On the positive side, the cast was excellent. The leads did a wonderful job, and their performances were one of the biggest reasons I stayed invested. The male lead is already one of my favourites, so I was happy to see him in this role, and the female lead also impressed me with her performance. She portrayed her character's strength and determination well. The supporting characters were another pleasant surprise because they had their own depth and motivations rather than simply existing to fill the screen. Even when the storyline became confusing, the performances kept things engaging.
The cinematography was absolutely stunning, and visually, this drama knew exactly what it was doing. The lighting, camera direction, settings, costumes, and carefully composed scenes created a dark, atmospheric, and sometimes incredibly sexy aesthetic. I particularly enjoyed the slow-motion shots and the intense gazes between the leads. Everything looked polished and immersive. However, my feelings about the visual style changed after my break. When I returned, the constant darkness and the seemingly endless parade of black outfits started feeling repetitive. I could appreciate the beauty of the cinematography while also feeling that the drama was leaning a little too heavily on its aesthetic.
As for the romance, please don't go into this expecting a full-fledged romance drama. The setup is great, and considering this is a Republic-era drama, I appreciated that the main couple wasn't unnecessarily toxic. Their relationship develops slowly, with subtle moments, lingering looks, and an understated connection rather than constant romantic scenes. The chemistry was there, and the leads looked gorgeous together, but romance is more of a side story than the central focus. Both characters have their own journeys of revenge, and their personal missions take priority. I didn't mind the slow burn itself, but I did wish the romantic storyline had a little more room to breathe.
The main leads are driven by painful pasts and a shared connection to the drug trade. The female lead seeks revenge for the murder of her parents, while the male lead is determined to track down the drug mafias and bring them to justice in his own way. Their individual goals give the story a strong foundation, and I enjoyed seeing them work together, especially in the later episodes. Their teamwork was one of the highlights for me because they felt more compelling when they were fighting toward a common goal. I just wish the overall storytelling had been more consistent so that their journeys and the larger conspiracy were easier to follow.
I also enjoyed the side story involving the aunt and the bodyguard. Their age-gap dynamic added another layer to the drama, and I found their relationship interesting to watch. It was a nice addition to the main storyline and gave me something else to look forward to when the central plot started feeling too heavy.
Despite all my complaints, I really liked the overall setup, the revenge themes, the cast, and the way the characters came together in the later episodes. The ending was another point in its favour. I was genuinely happy that we got a happy ending, and I especially appreciated that the family made it through without losing anyone. After all the darkness, danger, and revenge, seeing them reach a relatively peaceful conclusion was satisfying.
A visually gorgeous revenge drama with a great cast and satisfying ending, but one that could have benefited from tighter editing, more consistent pacing, and a little more clarity in its storytelling. If you're watching for action, revenge, and aesthetics, it's worth checking out. If you're primarily looking for romance, though, keep your expectations in check.
