Am trying so hard to watch this all the way through, but I'm really questioning the writers and POB's proclivities.…
She’s 19, it’s mentioned several times in the drama. After her birthday, she’s 20. She’s a genius kid, who skipped grades, and got straight into undergraduate studies at 15.
Because she studied so much to get into postgraduate studies at 18, she’s very awkward with people. That was also stated several times. In fact, she even mentioned it herself, that she had a hard time connecting to her classmates because of their age difference and her academic performance, often ending up saying something offensive without meaning it.
One of the reasons she feels so happy with him is because he’s just as direct, and through him she stepped into a world foreign to her, yet very welcoming, loving, and supportive.
Perhaps it’ll help you if you read the book. She fell in love with him at first sight, and being the very goal-orientated person she is, she did her 100% to pursue him and succeeded. Most of their physical interactions, particularly when it comes to taking the next step in their relationship, were initiated by her as well. In fact, she told him she wanted him to be way more physical with her, which he was wary of doing given the age difference.
The 2ML is a great man, but fundamentally he doesn’t understand the FL. He doesn’t see her real self, only an illusion he’s created and she didn’t bother to dispel for him. On the other hand, the ML not only knows her real self, he supports and encourages her to be as truthful with herself and her desires as possible. That’s the big difference.
In a relationship that lasts, knowing your partner is quintessential.
I rewatched this drama recently, and Zhao LiYing & Willian Chan are truly 70% of the reason I stuck with watching it in the first place. Perhaps they’ll have another drama together at some point 🙏

I was born in USSR, things like rights, freedom, and progress were entirely foreign to us. When USSR fell, we were literally plunged into the deep end.
As a people, my countrymen have always been highly adaptable, and we started learning French, English, German, etc from a very young age to quickly be able to keep up pace with the West, yet my grandparents and great grandparents were almost too old for such things. Even my parents struggled despite being pretty young when USSR fell.
I really feel sorry for the elderly Chinese people. Only they know what a harsh life they’ve led so far.
It seems to me like a lot of people don’t have a good understanding of the Chinese culture at the family level.
What this drama strives to show is the huge generation gap that has developed as a consequence of the country’s massive change in its socio-economic situation. If in the past, any parent could more or less support their child, now the elderly find themselves in a world entirely foreign to them, not knowing how they can navigate it along with their kids. The only way they can deal with their child’s issues is almost entirely out of place and unprofessional, because that’s how (simple) people would’ve behaved in the past.
You think the mother is too pushy and involved in her child’s life, however in China, particularly a few decades ago, not only your mother, even neighbours would find themselves perfectly comfortable to tell young people how to live their lives.
What’s amazing is that the mother is willing to change. That’s her character growth, and instead of being annoyed, perhaps think about it from her perspective. The whole world moved on, yet these people were left behind. I actually feel sorry for her, though that doesn’t mean her behaviour is acceptable.
Huan Huan and ZhiMing have got such a wholesome relationship. I hope that if they get married, it happens at Xing’Angli, in the garden, by the tree their grandma planted for ZhiMing to remind him of home. Them getting married would definitely be like a homecoming ❤️
I’m also an elder sister, in fact I helped raise my little brother. Just like with Huan Huan, if I say “little brother needs to go”, little brother goes 🤣🤣
But it seemed a bit rushed, she Just broke up with her bf, I wasn't expecting such positive response from her.
It’s been months since the break up. YZM and MCH have been in touch a lot over those months, they even travelled together which she’s never done with her previous bf.
ZhiMing and Huan Huan in Ep 17 were so cute! I love their chemistry and how easily they keep up with each other be it when teasing or talking business ideas. Communication is very important for a couple, they seem to be going in the right direction!
The reason why the mother thinks it’s okay to behave that way aside from their culture is also the family. They keep enabling her, saying “it’s not your fault”, “Huan will come back later after she calls down” etc etc. Somebody like her mother will never wake up to reality if they are not directly told that they are overstepping big time!
