what draws me to this is the time period. I hope this will not disappoint and be better than Gaksital.

I think so. In my experiences watching a genre you don't normally watch is very refreshing. :) Hope you will find slice of life that you really love.

Conrad is a favourite and I happen to be writing a thesis on his short stories at the moment. I recommned reading "Amy Foster" as one of the best of Conrad's tales and probably the most heart-grabbing, if you haven't yet, as long as you are not put off by less than enthusiastic depictions of female characters. Conrad wasn't always very good with female characters and I'm afraid Amy may no evoe sympathy bit Yanko certainly does. I also Like Ishiguro or in general writers who seem to trascend borders of nationality and exist somehow in-between, in the world, out there? What about yourself?

I also believe that personal insights help us discover someone for ourselves. Like Conrad. He's one of those writers who have been thoroughly dissected in critical thought. And yet his own letters, memoirs, the memoirs of his family help shed a personal light on the man who was marketed as one thing but in private may have been different. Maybe one day we can discover the writing too. I learned Japanese in the past and passed an exam but later I had to drop it. As a result I forgot most of the kanjis and only remeber some sentence structures. But maybe I can resume it one day. It would be nice to experience the poetic power of the language.

Oh so early? Have a safe trip! I had a pretty good day today, but I feel like I wasted a lot of time when I have much to do. Well, I don't really like to share skype with anyone but family. I can try to make a second account.

He's absolutely adorable and so thoughtful and mature for his age. The father-son moments when he is starting to reach out to his son at last are really endearing. So I read. It's really interesting how the drama makers fish out those personal stories that speak to the heart. Makes me wonder how popular the personal genre in literature is in Japan nowadays.
I don't think such contemporary books or diaries get translated widely, either so dramas like these are a unique opportunity to get familiar with such stories and perhaps a little bit with the mindsets guiding the writing. Although then again I recall Sei Shonnagon's Pillow book as a very personal piece of writing. I think I should research this more, actually. It's very interesting. If literature is a fossil shell for future generations, then personal insights

oh there is heartwarming and tender here. Very much so. But the context is a little heavy. I don;t think it's heavier than 1 litre of tears/ It;s also not a masterpiece like Tonbi. Will do of course. But I am fin ding myself in a strange mood to revisit some romcoms -.-. I think Winnie your drama "monster" maintains healthy weight and is on a reasonable diet :-)
