Chance upon a post in Weibo (China's Twitter/X) by producer Yu Zheng paying homage to the character of Zhong Xi Wu (ZXW), thought I'd share it here to any one interested, to gain some insights into how he was written:
" about love: I always feel that when you love a person, you should not only love her good attributes / good traits, but also her shortcomings. Human nature is complex, and it is difficult to measure a person by her strengths and weaknesses. So when you love someone, you can't just love "what you think" are her good traits, and try to change "what you think" are her shortcomings. I think it is not the right of the servant to withhold the information. But he found out and he has the power not to tell him. Because he is afraid of what the Lord will do if he finds out. I feel ZXW can just actually give up his position to be with HQ because he is so damn in love. Poor boy! On another note, if I were ZXW I'd rather know. The truth is oh so liberating.

I agree with you it doesn't matter if she threw it. It didn't mean she didn't love him anymore. It's how you feel not what you do. You cannot stop loving someone just because you throw something away.

In the novel too (as most know), ZXW is the emperor, so that explains why his action as Lord is a little too much. The transition is not as smooth for the screenwriter as they want to stay true to the novel. But as most know Chinese regulations now prohibit palace infighting storyline.

Let's not conclude yet, as the story unfolds very fast. But the easter egg at the end of ep 27 says a lot. In the novel, HQ loves ZXW but he never knew. But HRZ knew she was with him but in love with ZXW.
I haven’t watch ep 27, but looking at this preview, it really seems like we will only get HQ waking up only…
I think God knows what the ending will be! :D I am just enjoying the scenes between ZY and WXY. WXY is a great actor! Hope they do an express package. So we can get the last 3 or 2 eps at once. ;)

There's speculation that it's a 'dream within a dream'. That her so called real life/ first life is also a dream. In fact (in reality), HQ is supposed to be married (or already married) to ZXW and not ZYL. (ZXW had asked to marry her since he is in love with her even though he knew HQ likes ZYL). But since HQ is so in love with ZYL she tried to escape on the eve of her wedding and was injured and fell into a coma. ZXW used a certain incense to make her dream come true / satisfy what she wants e.g. being with ZYL.... And also to make her realize who loves her the most.
Why I think this is plausible is because in interviews ZY always say ZXW is 'husband' material and Yu Zheng said all speculations are not correct re ending. Also this explains the backstory between HQ and ZXW and their deep and intense interactions/ conversations.
