It gets better as the story progresses. At episode 8 now and it was amazing. It has been steadily raising the heat and slowly moving towards the overall plot. Previews are great (maybe check out those on wetv? Not big spoilers that will give you hints).

It's always difficult to decide how much time you should dedicate to something so I can only tell you my honest opinion. Setting up story and characters can be slow but I can honestly say that I don't think it would be a waste. It is really good, 7 and 8 today both stepped up progressively. Whatever you decide, I hope it works out for you.

If you want to call me an anti of that drama, I will gladly accept that title. In fact , I low rated a XZ drama before because I think it was really bad.

Antis don't care about the content, they simply rate it 1. Then some fans rate the whole thing early to compensate for that because otherwise XZ dramas would have a ridiculously low rating during broadcast.

I always rate individual episodes as I watch them and that's my recommendation to all but tbh after so many years of harassment, I understand even those who rate the whole thing then adjust that up and down as time passes.

Yes, it really was. Actually I am still not sure if we were rooting for the right side or if there even is a right side. I am looking forward to that part too especially as some of Shi Ying's choices are interesting. Of course it is possible they made the drama way more straightforward.

I also wonder how far they will go when it comes to how KS actually treated mermaids because that stuff was pretty out there.

Take a look at that Yuri account a few posts below yours that says not impressed. Click on it and their watchlist. They have rated only one drama, this one, and they gave it 1 star. This is the usual method of XZ anti to lower the scores of his dramas.

Lower scores are normal but once antis start giving it 1 star it is over. Almost impossible to ever balance it out and they have sock accounts to do this multiple times.

It's because Shi Ying was so powerful and talented. It was a sacrifice to make sure he can't reach the throne because then the country would have stabilised. As it is, it leaves it in chaos with an already bad Emperor who can't handle it. Result is corruption and infighting.

Listen how Zhu Yan describes him when she was on that roof. That's what made him the target.
