I get it, they want to maximize their profit. However, isn’t it also very risky delaying the release? In 2021, it wasn’t just BL dramas that got the sudden ban. Artists were getting cancelled left and right. They are for one, betting that the BL drama regulations will loosen and not tighten in the future, and two, their main cast will not get into any serious scandals or be used as a scapegoat and accused of some unforgivable misdemeanour by their competitors before the drama is released. This is like saying, I’ll give you $100MM today direct deposit, vs $X in 5 years time. If you choose to get the money later, you get to choose the amount, be it $1B, $10B, but there is a list in tiny font “conditions apply.” And if even one small condition is not met during these 5 years, you get no money, nil, plus you need to pay a large fine. This is like the current situation in the Chinese entertainment industry.
