I agree! I rewatched several times and do feel each time brought better perspective of the characters that I've missed. I also feel that the script is a lot better than what the critics are saying--it had layers, it brought all the loose ends together, the secondary characters weren't just standing around being cardboard dolls or totally jealous without depth (Hua Shu certainly was different in that respect) and they didn't bother with the mortal reincarnations because their focus was on the one deed in the beginning that brought heavy consequences. I truly think this xianxia will get appreciated more and more.

Umm. Bai Jue was over 60000 years old. yuan Ci is a few hundred. He hardly spent any of his youth with real gods. His parents were only weaker versions of themselves. It’d be easier if you could suspend your disbelief and think of the ML as a ten year old telling the adults here what to do. Maybe that would help you understand his predicament.

They are actually standalone with different names of the characters, except for male lead. For example, ML’s parents are given different names in TLI.
However, while watching TLI, you might be wondering passingly why the god realm is closed or what this elder mortal couple history is , etc. The drama doesn’t give enough info and you might be curious.
